Minchin's portrayal of Judas in this is one of the best things I've ever seen. The satire of the piece, combined with Minchin's atheism, combine here impeccably. In "Heaven on Their Minds," you can see he's basically exasperated (as the role calls for). Here, however, he's deadly in earnest. You can see Judas going a bit mad with the questions and lack of answers - both at the original death of Christ, and now, 2k+ years later. The same questions, the still paucity of irrefutable answers. And yet, despite the frustration, the pain, the doubts, he still loves his friend Jesus. When Jesus is raised up on the cross, he's on his knees, begging, shouting up to the sky, to Jesus, to God, to the Universe, to anyone that'll listen. You don't get to really see into the eyes of most actors in a stage production, but the sheer intensity in Minchin's Judas, especially in this piece, is utterly beautiful.

As a kid, I didn't really think about it, but it's interesting that the words "do you think your what they say you are," can drastically change the meaning depending on how they're interpreted. The 2000 version makes those words sound like the chorus is cruelly mocking Jesus. What do you think the intention is? Don't you get me wrong: I only want to know.

I hear that. I did a production of the show on a raked stage - meaning the floor was _slanted_ toward the audience (not a gradual rake - it was built to a _steep_ rake so going upstage was _literally_ up like climbing a hill) and there was one dance moment where we had to bend back and touch the floor behind us and rebound right back up. Easy the first time facing downstage, not so much repeating the choreography for the second verse blocked facing _upstage._ First run on the set everyone forgot and there was quite the avalanche of people falling and sliding toward the orchestra pit... They had to reblock so both backbends happened facing downstage.

@allanmoorhead9492
@allanmoorhead9492 Жыл бұрын
@@TheBabysittersReview I know Tim Rice was an atheist and I'm perfectly aware that the musical/opera is written from an atheist perspective. I have listened to JCS since it was first released. I own about fifteen different versions of it. Webber at the time classed himself as agnostic and said he admired Jesus as a great historical figure. It wasn't intended as openly gratuitous atheist propaganda. Minchin completely spoils this number by letting his atheism show. It's performed as a corny "song and dance" routine, like King Herod's Song. Herod really was ridiculing and condemning Jesus. This is supposed to be the grand finally of the opera, a highly emotive and stirring number, and Minchin kills all of that. Judas is not celebrating Jesus's death, he is lamenting Jesus's demise and questioning him about the way he acted, though the lyrics contain a lot of irony. He was Jesus's friend, and he committed suicide out of guilt at betraying him to his death. This song is not supposed to take place at his crucifixion, but immediately before it, after he is sentenced to die. In this version they are making a joke out of Jesus's death. Wrong! And that awful singing! No wonder Minchin stuck to comedy. The backing singers are better than him! Why would you cast a comedian in a main role in an opera? Along with those terrible dancers and choreography lol. What did they hire strippers for that? And look at the budget set! Were the set designers on strike? I don't know why Webber approved all of this. Perhaps he is doing it just for the money now, like George Lucas.

@allanmoorhead9492
@allanmoorhead9492 Жыл бұрын
@@Lablbobla JCS was always blasphemous in the sense that it denies the divinity of Jesus and portrays him as a victim and his death as futile. It was written from an atheist perspective (though Webber said he was agnostic). Yet the early performances, at least, told a story with characters who were treated sympathetically and with dignity. Jesus wasn't spat upon or portrayed as a clown. The events are portrayed as tragic, not humorous. It was a dramatic and emotional production in its own right. This performance starring Minchin is just a militant atheist's wet dream which openly spits upon the Gospels. There's no emotion in it - it's done for cheap laughs. And it's outright awful - the singing, the choreography, the costumes, the set. It looks like a bad high school drama student musical.

I'm not sure if I read this or watched something about it but I think that this scene takes place in Jesus's mind; due to the first words of the song being the last words Judas ever spoke to him - "Every time i look at you i don't understand...". What makes it more tragic is that Jesus never knew of Judas' suicide, so he probably thought Judas was celebratory :) Also that Tamborine is my hero.

There's something about live theatre, even on a screen, that's just next-level compared to even the best films. It's like when you're told something in a movie is a practical effect, and you enjoy it even more the next time round. Except it's not retroactive and it's the full performance. Like, acting or no, staged or not, we just witnessed Judas descend from on high to ask really the only question that must be left in Jesus' head: do you think you're the real deal, that all this will be worth it? Theatre rocks. It's older than mud and will outlive all other art!

I've seen more productions of JCS than I could possibly count. This staging is without a doubt the most powerful -- and poignant -- I've ever seen. It strips away every bit of pretense and lays the entire story bare. It's the first time Judas's fracturing love for Jesus is portrayed. People always portray Judas as a cartoonish jealous & "evil" character -- which is far from the truth. Tim Minchin was able to tease the nuances from the text and give us a much more interesting, much more painfully real Judas. WoW.

The thing I always loved about Jesus Christ Superstar is there's a million movies about the torture and resurrection of Jesus, but so few about who he was before he died, and nearly none about Judas' motives, aside from greed. Some of his non-comedy songs (written while he was doing this) and some interviews he's done have done a beautiful job of explaining why: Hollywood and Broadway are both brutal, and one of the reasons Tim is so good is because he's such a sensitive soul who really throws his all into any work he does. The cancellations, the rejections, and even the successes blooming around him were like poisoned fruit. He's doing much better back in Oz. So we can expect to see more from him through Australian productions, but it won't be Broadway sadly. Tbh, I respect him so much for having realised how it was affecting him, and making that decision. Definitely a rolemodel as far as I'm concerned!

Every church related production makes that switch, and it infuriates me. It changes the tone of the moment. So that's one win. But the light up cross?!?!? Just as effective as the filmwork of the original, in a different way, but equally brilliant. Wish I could have seen this live!!!!
