Rudy was two songs actually. The first conclusion builds to a dramatic ending of Rudy being played up on the screen. The second conclusion is slow and sad and is called an epilogue. The narrator revisits the song immediately following. It portrays Rudy coming out of the movie after watching himself fail yet again. The solution to Rudy's problem is for him to develop the confidence to see someone else suffering up on the screen.

Always loved the contrasting flavors of their two greatest albums, “Crime of the Century” and “Breakfast in America”, this one being the looser, darker, more epic-feeling and cinematic; and “Breakfast” being the joyous, supremely tight, sparkling toe-tapping Rock/Pop masterwork. For me, Supertramp was for its best stretch the only newer band I’d ever heard that put out an honest Beatles-like vibe of eclectic musical genius.

Hide in your shell and you might end up in the next song. Asylum. Asylum is full of emotion and desperation.
@WilliamJones-sf5pt10 ай бұрын
Asylum was the true conclusive song back in the day because of the flip over from the A-side to B-side. Dreamer was starting over. With Supertramp, there wasn't anything anticlimactic. For example, in this song here, the second verse and chorus wasn't just a play over of the first verse and chorus. There is progression throughout. The conclusion of this song builds on the second verse and chorus and that is acheived by the use of percussion. Rick's following song "Asylum" had to be absurd as to avoid being an anticlimactic let down to this song. In that song, believe it or not, they first introduce the added backup of strings. The orchestration in this third song is acheived by playing a hand saw with a violin bow.

That whimsical, scince-fictiony sound comes from a really interesting instrument called the theremin. It's an electronic musical instrument controlled without physical contact by the performer. It's basically two antennas in the shape of an L. You play it by moving your hand in the air, bringing it closer and farther from the antennas, to make different notes and different volume. The most famous use of it might be the whistling spacy sound in the Star Trek theme. Led Zeppelin uses it in Whole Lotta Love. And the Beach Boys used it on Good Vibrations. It's really cool!

Brilliant and the lady totally gets it. There are so many levels in Roger's / Supertramps compositions with lots going on in the background. They use such a wide array of instruments, conflicting and complementing melodies running behind the main and counter backing vocals that the nearest band I can compare them to is the one and only Pink Floyd. Great stuff guys.

Hide In Your Shell is an absolute masterpiece for its time. In those days it was common thought that breaking out & pressuring people into loosening up. Of course in reality it never works but that doesn't minimise the genius that Roger brought into this song. The build-up to crack the shell & the final breakthrough or climax to the sax at the end is just superb. You should do Ain't Nobody But Me which is a Jekyll & Hyde masterpiece.

The sound you're talking about, Asia, is a theremin (Look it up: you move your hand across a thin metal thread and the pitch changes). Anyway, you have perfect ears to detect something subtle like that

Supertramp was probably one of the most successful Progressive bands from the 1970's, right beside Emerson, Lake and Palmer . Crime of the Century was America's first introduction to Supertramp, but their album Breakfast in America was their biggest hit, but in the 1970's, like Stevie Wonder, Supertramp couldn't make a mistake, even if they tried . Deepest love song that they ever wrote was "Even In The Quietest Moments" .... basically, the essence of the exploration of falling in love with another Soul .

I interpret this as someone reaching out to a person who is in a deep clinical depression, referring to that person's beauty, which is something a depressed person could never see themselves. (Depressives certainly do hide in a shell, out of of apathy, but sometimes for protection too).

That high pitch wailing sound in the background that Asia kept hearing, sounds an awful lot like a Theremin, I'm not saying it was a Theremin instrument but it sounds very much like one. A Theremin was a strange musical instrument that was used in older science fiction movies where you'd hear that wailing sound which was made by a metal electrified rod that stands vertical and you place you hand near it to change the pitch which creates these out of this world strange wailing sounds.
