Supertramp made wonderful use of woodwinds in many of their pieces. John Helliwell was (and is) a master at creating emotion and mood with his woods. Rick Davies and Roger Hodgson were both very accomplished composers and arrangers - their artistry lifts Supertramp above most other prog rock groups of the 70s and early 80s. Thank you, Amy, for another insightful analysis.

Thanks for this listen and response! Supertramp's run of 4 great LPs (Crime of the Century; Crisis? What Crisis?; Even in the Quietest Moments; Breakfast in America) appeared while I was in high school from 1974 to 1979 on the West Coast of Canada. This band was popular with me and my friends. We enjoyed the complexity of the songs as they fit together on each album as a kind of suite, the sound of clarinet and saxophone, the difference between the sound of the two lead singers. I enjoyed seeing Supertramp in concert on the Breakfast In America tour, the same tour that led to their double live LP recording in Paris, France. Same years that Pink Floyd produced Dark Side of the Moon, Wish You Were Here, Animals, and The Wall. Jethro Tull produced great LPs, from Minstrel In The Gallery to Songs from the Wood, etc. Genesis created Foxtrot, Selling England By The Pound, The Lamb, then Peter Gabriel left and Phil Collins stepped from behind the drums for Trick of the Tail, etc. Meanwhile, David Bowie travelled from Ziggy Stardust to the Thin White Duke, on through the Berlin Trilogy, and finished the decade with Scary Monsters. Roxy Music moved from bizarre to smooth by the end of the decade. And "punk" exploded from 1976, with the Sex Pistols, The Clash, Buzzcocks, Talking Heads, Blondie, and others. Leading into post-punk with Magazine, Gang of Four, The Cure, etc. Joni Mitchell was doing her own thing through the 70s, and Kate Bush appeared later in the decade. And there was so much more music of interest, too, in other genres.
@djknox22 күн бұрын
I echo your sentiments. What an era of music! I saw Supertramp on tour for each of those 4 LPs. I was just a child for Crime of the Century but my brother was 7 years senior and so I benefited from his engagement with great bands, including seeing Pink Floyd in Hamilton between their WYWH and Animals LPs.

I was in junior high when the Breakfast in America album came out in '79 and couldn't get enough of Goodbye Stranger. A few years later I was able to check out the album from my local library but wasn't too impressed with the other songs outside of the four played on radio. I've always been into recording and mixing my own music and have read and watched tons of videos and books. In 2023 I saw Mobile Fidelity had done a remaster of Breakfast in America, and as I wanted full versions of the songs (greatest hits compilations tended to use the chopped up 'single' versions) I decided to pull the trigger and bought it, even though I don't yet have an SACD player. I have a good-sized CD collection, but I have never heard an album that was so GOOD sonically as this one. The production and engineering, just... Wow. This song is the cherry on top of it all. Really looking forward to seeing Amy's reaction to the 'hits' (Goodbye Stranger, Logical Song, Breakfast in America and Long Train Home - especially those last two).

@@jonathanmaybury5698 And it continues with Roger Hodgson's solo releases. Hodgson has always had this special talent for reaching the human spirit and very core. Very moving. Another thing mentioned is how there's always development in the music, and this is so true. Much of Supertramp's music appears very repetitive on the surface, but the magic is, that it is constantly evolving, and if given attention, rewards the listener with magical journeys. Amy's use of the comparisons with sunsets and sunrises is so spot on. Often their songs start almost like a whisper, evolve into a dramatic crescendo before returning to the reflective nature in the end. So wonderful!

As a Canadian, I can confirm. This band is really popular here. Even younger generations are likely to recognize "The Logical Song" or "Dreamer". "Goodbye Stranger" is the only song I know how to play on piano... As for expecting a baritone voice, this is one of those bands that has two lead singers, and the other is a little more on that side of the equation. And I never really thought much of the saxophone solo in this song, but now that you talk about it, I've just realized how absolutely LOVELY it is. This is a bit of an unorthodox piece to start with from them, but a really good one!

This band is all about songwriting and arrangements. The saxophone and woodwind player, mr John Anthony Heliwell, is the jack of all trades of the band. When I made the transition to CDs, "Even in the Quietest Moments" was the first CD I ever bought. I originally owned this album on 8-Track. There was so much to this album, and it's largely weighted toward acoustic instruments, but it was a true connoisseur's album. Sure, the "easiest" song to get hooked with was the only actual hit on the album, "Give a Little Bit." But when you get to appreciate songs like "Downstream" or the climactic "Fool's Overture," you realize that this album is an absolute masterpiece. Whereas "Crime of the Century" is a distinctly BRITISH album, I always said "Even in the Quietest Moments" is a uniquely EUROPEAN album. Do you agree with this assessment?

Great reaction Amy, I am glad you enjoyed this so much. While one of their deeper cuts, it is still a great song. I also like how this song expresses the idea of needing to find a quiet place to calm the spirit, particularly in this modern world. This same album has some more popular songs that I think you will really like, ones that better show off their incredible musicianship from all the band members, such as their very popular and more musically impressive "Logical Song," among others. It is also worth watching one of their live performances, which I think helps you to better appreciate their musicianship, such as how some members switch between instruments as they are performing, often within the same song.

I'm thrilled that you appreciate this song as much as I do. I would say that on the spectrum of their whole body of work, this could be placed at one end as their sweetest, most mellow piece. That's not to say that there aren't more songs of theirs that have sections that have this particular type of quietness. An excellent example would be "Even in the Quietest Moments", one their most epic tunes, for sure. However, that song has a wider range that moves from sweet and beautiful to powerful and intense tempo, then back again. I would suggest that epic piece as your next listen. Or... something from their "Crime of the Century" album, which was their biggest album until "Breakfast in America" came along. That's a fantastic album that fits in the center of the spectrum. Perhaps "Dreamer", or "School". I absolutely love Supertramp! A huge part of my teenage years of Prog Rock.

A Roger Hodgson song--while Rick Davies and Roger Hodgson shared song writing credits(a la McCartney and Lennon with the Beatles), the song was written by Hodgson, because he's the lead singer, when Davies is the lead singer, Davies wrote the song. As usual with Roger Hodgson, a well-crafted pop song with the arrangement perfectly highlighting the lyrics. The use of the organ perhaps is a subtle hint as to the spiritual/religious tone of the lyrics. Also as usual with Supertramp, excellent production/engineering, Hodgson's vocals perfect, Rick Davies on organ outstanding, John Helliwell nailing his solo as always

Supertramp and Hodgson were masters of this "special note" and the mood it provides. Chord progression and putting together the different parts of a song harmonically was - at least regarding this kind of music - almost perfect like hardly anyone else. Some rock fans will not like this music, it´s too "sweet", but I and many others acknowledge the sheer beauty of it. There are many songs transporting this quality, even better, in Supertramp´s repertoire. Hodgson´s angelic voice and the warm, gentle sound of the wind instruments highlighted this. But in fact all of them were essential parts of the band, bass and drums too. The often dominating (electric) piano anyway. In a way Supertramp were in a league of their own - back then you would realize them as soon as the music started.

That was a lovely choice for your first listen to Supertramp, Amy! It says it was written by Davies and Hodgson, but it was written only by Roger Hodgson. He is also the singer. If you want to listen to a Supertramp song written by Rick Davies, you should listen to "Downstream" from the album "Even in the Quietest Moments". That song is all Rick Davies. He wrote it and he sings and play the piano. A beautiful song.

John Helliwood is handling the synth and various wind instruments from flute to clarinet to several saxophones, while Davies is on organ and harmonica and Hodgson on a small electric piano and guitar in their various songs. Seibenberg on drums and Thomson on bass. The vocals are done by Hodgson, Davies and Helliwell.

Go on with more Supertramp. You will really love them, because of their mix of pop, rock, jazz and classic elements. Songs are way too many, so look up to the comments. You surely will find some great ones!

Have always been a Supertramp fan! However, my old memories have surfaced! In the late 70's I had two brief romances. One lady drove a MG (British racing green) and had two poodles #Even in the quietest moments and the other was a friend of my sister #Breakfast in America! As usual, great analysis, Thank you for the memories!!!!!!!!!!!!!
