The entire Crime of the Century album is a masterpiece! Released in 1974, it clearly influenced Pink Floyd's The Wall, which was released five years later in 1979. Crime of the Century is one of those unique and special start-to-finish albums where you are mesmerized and lost in the wall of sound. Incredible!

If you have 40 minutes, listen to the album Crime of the Century in its entirety in order, just 8 songs that are threaded together that tell the story of Rudy...not supposed to be a concept album but you be the judge...it is brilliant, not always uplifting but amazingly produced and worth listening to at least once in a lifetime

Rudy is one of their best off their best album. Interesting train and train station effects. Some don't like 'Crisis what crisis' but I think it's a good second. Well done for not interrupting much.

I share your amazement and excitement for the unique sound quality of Supertramp...it all started for me in 1975 in my university dorm hearing Crime of the Century played next door.
@lilybee295511 ай бұрын
Hi Angela, you're all forgiven for not paying attention to the lyrics: the music is multi-layered and so good! 💥Basically, the song is about Rudy, a man who dreams his life away and waits for things to happen instead of taking charge of his destiny. As you said, it takes more than just one listen to appreciate it. But I'm glad you picked it (it's my favourite Supertramp song). Cheerio!🐝

Crime of the Century album was (and still is) a masterpiece way ahead of it's time. It deserves to be held in the same reverence as Dark Side of the Moon. They were brilliant at creating concept albums. You really need to listen to this album in full from start to finish in the dark with a good set of headphones and let yourself drift away with the story.

For me, Supertramp is and always will easily be one of the top 5 best bands of the 1970s..and of all time for me... with the others being Pink Floyd, Genesis, Yes and Rush... all followed of course, by the Beatles, but they broke up in 1970. You could react to every song on every one of Supertramp's first four albums, and they would all make for great reactions. Supertramp is a more than worthy rabbit hole! But if anything, Billy Joel was following Supertramp's lead, not the other way around.

Great reaction, Ang!! If you are only two songs in to your Supertramp journey you have so much excellent music ahead of you!! Start with this LP, Crime of the Century, then do Crisis? What Crisis? followed by Even In The Quietest Moments. Not a bad song on any of them, and all reaction worthy!! This album came out in 1974 and Billy Joel did not get started until 1977 I believe, so while the piano bits might be similar they were definitely not influenced by him, at least not until many years later. "School" should be next!

A suite type of composition, all about a day in the life of Rudy..very creative. But no one could ever say they lacked imagination..2nd vocal was Rodger Hogdson, the Band's keyboardist/guitarist/2nd lead singer. The Police weren't a band yet, but ironically, they'd also be signed by A&M records around late '76.

The higher register vocal was from Rodger Hodgson, the lead singer on The Logical Song and many other great Supertramp songs.
@FredtheFrisian10 ай бұрын
Rodger is not "the lead singer", there many songs with Rick Davies as lead singer. Not to open a "box of Pandora" here, but I'm somewhat more into the voice of Rick (of course that's all personal).
@magneto793010 ай бұрын
@FredtheFrisian well, let's see, I have reread my comment several times, and I still don't see anything there about me saying he was the lead singer for Supertramp. I said he was the lead singer on The Logical Song and many other great Supertramp songs. This wasn't intended to be in favor of him and against Rick. I like both of them.

You can't go wrong with Supertramp, anything off albums 3-8 range from great to amazing. There are some gems on their first two albums as well. How about "Child of Vision", the closer from their biggest album (6th) , "Breakfast in America"
@parissimons638510 ай бұрын
Good reaction, and fun to see you enjoy this song. Supertramp released this song on their classic album, Crime of the Century in 1974, the year after Billy Joel released Piano Man, his first LP (and the year after Dark Side of the Moon). Not sure if they would have heard Piano Man before recording this. Supertramp had two lead singers, Roger Hodgson (high voice, guitars, keyboards) and Rick Davies (lower voice, keyboards). By the way, Sting released his first album as the lead singer and bassist of The Police in 1978, four years after Crime of the Century appeared.

The voice you heard that sounds like Sting is that of Roger Hodgson. He's the one that sings the Logical song, he's a solo artist now. The main singer on this song is Rick Davies.

I was interrupted on my 1st comment, but now I can elaborate! The beginning reminds me of Al Stewart! You know, the artist who sings the amazing masterpiece of a song Year Of The 🐈😺 Cat! This song does take you on a journey! There are a few songs in this category that I dig a lot, such as Can't Get It Out Of My Head 🗣️ by ELO! Roundabout by YES, and a few others, but the best one in my opinion, the full version of Nights In White Satin by The Moody 💙 Blues! Bye fellow music lovers!
