Thanks for this video, I found it really helpful as a supervising parent. I taught my oldest how to drive and he passed first time. Having done advanced driving before (25 years ago) thought i "knew it all" and was the most "patient supervisor" known to humankind :-) . However reality hit me hard for my second child and realised I neither of these things! It was just that they learn in different ways and I needed to respond and adapt from my previous methods. This video (and your others) has really helped me in this process. Very grateful for you posting this content!

Couple of extra tips in there for me teaching my wife. I do gently help with the steering mainly when changing gear as because one part of the body is moving to the left it's easy for the whole body (car) to want to follow. Absolutely no hurry when stalling, take your time and we'll start again. Anyone who has passed their test should know a vehicle with L plates needs more space and time. They will just have to wait. My student is very valuable and every mistake is a learning experience. Thanks for the videos.

The insights into psychology and what learners find difficult, and how to solve these difficulties, are truly excellent - and entertaining (e.g. the momentary detour you did in another vid into ‘gravitational lensing’ of light).

Shouldn't drive on motorway as a learner - check! Your instructor should not be on the phone whilst teaching a learner - check! Both happened to me when I was learning to drive. By accident my friend and I ended up on the M5 at night, but got off at the next exit. You live, you learn. Also, my instructor started to take phone calls whilst I was driving when I got enough confidence in my driving. It felt good and bad as I was in charge fully but this wasn't that I paid for. Anyways it's all behind me now. One thing for sure, if your instructor is taking phone calls whilst you drive, you should look for another instructor.

Private practise can help loads but it can also hurt. The best thing to do is to try it and find out if it works for her. Generally it's very helpful as long as the supervisor isn't making the learner feel rushed, it's easy for the supervisor to put their own worries of getting a move on to the learner which then makes the learner feel stressed.

The o is short like in fort and is almost like an u sound as in cur or burr. The r is rolled to the point it almost becomes a d or t sound like in fort or cord. I would like to clarify something, and although I've passed my test now, this confused me whilst I was learning. A learner driver cannot drive on a motorway, what is classed as a motorway? Is it an 'M' road specifically (M1, M25 etc.) usually with 3 lanes? The reason I ask is that I am from North Wales, and around here you would need to enter England or South Wales to get to a 'motorway'. Here, we have an 'A' road (A55), that is the main road along North Wales, but a lot of people nickname it a 'motorway'. It is a dual carriageway, with 2 lanes, but with very similar rules to motorways (70mph speed limit for example). It seems very different to what people in larger areas would call a dual carriageway (ones with 40/50 mph speed limits for example). Can learner drivers drive on this road? (apologies for the long winded post, and if I may have answered my own questions, but I am totally not sure).
@LUAu1014 жыл бұрын
You can drive on a motorway as a learner actually, but you have to be with an approved driving instructor and the car must have dual controls. You can drive on A roads as a learner and always could. A motorway is a motorway, they're marked by that distinctive blue sign, with the two white lanes heading off in the distance crossed by a bridge. They do have their own special regulations you can find in the highway code and are not A roads. Hence phrases like the national speed limit is 70 mph "on motorways and dual carriageways" < 'motorway' and 'dual carriageway' aren't the same. England has plenty of 70 mph dual carriageways, though good luck getting up to 70 :P :P
@edsmith42684 жыл бұрын
We have a similar issue here in Devon where everyone calls the A38 the 'motorway'. All motorways have an 'M' in their name eg M4, M5 etc, and will have the blue coloured motorway signage. You will be absolutely fine driving on the A55 as long as you follow the usual rules of learning making sure you are with someone with the right licence category and has held their licence for at least 3 years. I believe qualified driving instructors with dual controls can take learners out on actual motorways (the rules changed a couple of years ago to allow this) There are a couple of roads in the country which are a bit more tricky to work out. For instance, there is a road called the A1(M). I'm not totally sure on the rules for the A1M, but as it has the blue motorway signs, I'd probably advise against learners from driving on it!
@ConquerDriving4 жыл бұрын
A learner can't drive on M roads with blue signs. They can drive on A roads with green signs.

@@ConquerDriving Thank you so much for the amazing work you do on this channel. I only discovered you after passing my test (third time, but my first test fail was a long time ago) but you've taught me a lot and your depth of knowledge and style of presentation are fantastic. I know this video is specifically about private practise and obviously you don't wanna muddy the waters. I know that a learner can't do private practise on a motorway, but can I just confirm that you're not saying that learners aren't allowed on motorways at all? Because it's right there in the highway code, rule 253: "From 4 June 2018 provisional licence holders may drive on the motorway if they are accompanied by an approved driving instructor and are driving a car displaying red L plates (D plates in Wales), that’s fitted with dual controls." Sadly the law is not strict on uninsured drivers at all. Several years ago now I ended up being airlifted to hospital due to an uninsured driver causing an accident. She also left the scene of the accident but did return with her husband. Because her and her husband told police that he gave her permission to drive his car without insurance my lawyer was able to fight and argue with his insurance that he was liable for it but it took almost 3years of fighting, copy of police statements and threatening to take it to court for them to finally agree to pay out for my written off car and my injuries. The woman however when she went to court only got £100 fine and 6penalty points on her license for being uninsured and the judge threw out the dangerous driving charge despite me being left with a life long neck injury. The police man who attended my accident called me after he had been to court to testify against her called me apologising for such a pathetic punishment

He's got a used car buying guide. It's quite likely that your first year of insurance will be more than the value of your car too.

Look at lots of different cars and get insurance quotes for them, I found comparethemarket to give me the cheapest quotes. You’ll end up finding the perfect car

What if your postcode stops you being able to get a learner's insurance? I've tried Marmalade and they've been negative about my Lewisham postcode.

Hi, I’ve previously signed up to collingwood using your code, when I log in again the code is no longer applied to the quotes I had made and I no longer know the code please can you help
@ConquerDriving4 жыл бұрын
I think the code is one time use. I recommend you call collingwood, they may be able to sort this. Mention Conquer Driving to get the discount.

Can I rent a car for a day and practice with an instructor with other requirements? if so how do cover the insurance?
@ConquerDriving3 жыл бұрын
You will have to check with the business you are renting the car from.

I want to know can a learner drive had child back seat is that ok?
@ConquerDriving2 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't recommend it but it's not illegal as long as the child is in an appropriate child restraint/seat.
@ConquerDriving2 жыл бұрын
The reason why I wouldn't recommend it is because children can be very distracting as an experienced driver let alone if you're trying to learn.

@ConquerDriving Жыл бұрын
The driver of the car must have insurance, but it's a good idea for the supervisor to have insurance too incase they need to drive.

can a learner driver have kids at the back seat?
@ConquerDriving2 жыл бұрын
It's not against the law but may be a distraction.

can you teach someone to drive on private land
@ConquerDriving3 жыл бұрын
You can but you wouldn't learn how to deal with the public road.
In the UK you need to be 17 years old to learn to drive a car.

Collingwood Insurance wont insure a 1 litre honda, or infact any car i've heard my mates try insure them with. Crap company in my opinion

What do you think of using the handbrake as a rudimentary brake for the instructor for emergencies?
@Noah-nx4ic4 жыл бұрын
Not an instructor, but I'd guess pull over onto the hard shoulder and swap places with your supervisor so they can drive until your off the motorway
@ConquerDriving4 жыл бұрын
Can work, dual controls are far more effective though.
