Boomers will still remember this ship as the expedition backdrop to Hans & Lotte Hass's regular TV programmes of life beneath the waves. Glad to sea it still thrives - unlike Jacques Cousteau's "Calypso"...

Xarifa had different rigs during her life. One rig was designed by Uffa Fox. She is an amazing ship. It is hard to see, but the swell can be very strong. The period between the up and down of this swell is very long. Her motion is normal, in accordance with her shape and displacement.

Beautiful boat - but she doesn't look like she travels smoothly. If she rocks and rolls that much in calm water what must she be like in a big swell? Anyone on board needs good sea legs and strong stomachs.

She is not in smooth water, she is anchored in a place with long period of swell. Any ship on this situation will do the same.

The haling port on the transom says "Valetta." That's the main city on the Maltese Islands. Malta. About 60 miles southeast of Sicily. Spent a week there in '79 on the 3 mast 1909 schooner "Ariadne' out of Hamburg. We were delivering her to the Caribbean. I was building state rooms underway. She rolled like a dingy also. Cabins where the ballast had been. Good Atlantic crossing tho.

No, hobby horsing has been around very much longer than Hobies or any other catamaran.

The rocking was the first thing I noticed too - I guess you get used to it after a while but it seems excessive.

Hobby horsing is caused by the pitch moment of inertia and the resulting resonant frequency matching the wave frequency, not just the size or displacement of the boat. Every boat will hobby horse in the right conditions that match its resonant frequency, the trick is designing a boat that doesn't hobby horse in conditions it is likely to encounter (say at anchor or going to weather in a modest sea) but this one is pretty bad as you note. Had they done a more modern hull shape with the waterline carried fully to the stern and bow, not only would the boat sail better/faster it would hobby horse at anchor far less.
