Interview with David Gum Awng, Deputy Minister of International Cooperation for Myanmar's National Unity Government (NUG): Supporting Myanmar’s Spring Revolution: The role of the international community and pro-democracy actors
“We would like our international partners to see Myanmar’s struggle for democracy as a revolution. We are not going to entertain any idea that the military will still be counted as a credible partner…. I'm confident in our ability to build a better Myanmar where there is greater justice, social justice and a more equitable society based on mutual respect, love for democracy and freedom. That's the kind of future that I want for my country and we're working towards that.”
In an interview with International IDEA, David Gum Awng, Deputy Minister of International Cooperation for Myanmar's National Unity Government (NUG), discusses international community responses towards Myanmar’s 2021 Spring Revolution, the role that it can play and how the NUG engages with international organizations and bilateral partners.
The Deputy Minister also highlights the NUG's achievements and its collaboration with pro-democracy actors despite difficult challenges. As a young leader in the democratic revolution, he shares his advice on how the young generation in Myanmar can help to restore democracy and build an inclusive future Myanmar.
