Poultry farmers are facing an ever consolidated meat processing industry to which they can sell their products. The nature of poultry farming and meat processing also prevents farmers from selling their products outside of a certain distance, further restricting their options when selling their products and providing the poultry processing oligopsony greater power over poultry farmers. Data Science Clinic students Stella Chen, Yuxi He, Angel Rodriguez, and Hantao Xiao collaborated with the Rural Advancement Foundation International (RAFI) to filter false-positive predictions of poultry barn locations in satellite photography. The students also developed an interactive data labeling interface that allows RAFI to label false positives, true positives, and false negatives in the data.
This project was developed as part of the University of Chicago Data Science Institute's Data Science Clinic
Applied experiential learning is a core component of the DSI educational mission. The Data Science Clinic provides students with projects that transcend the traditional classroom experience. The Clinic is a project-based course where students work in teams as data scientists with real-world clients under the supervision of mentor instructors. To do this we partner with industry, social impact, civic organizations and research groups for 1 or 2 academic quarters on data science projects. As part of their training, students will be tasked with producing key deliverables, such as data analysis, open source software, as well as final client presentations and research reports.
