Thank you for the recommendation of the grief book. My husband passed suddenly in July 2024, I went into a manic stage. Then in November the depression hit. I started seeing a therapist in December, which has been very helpful. Thank you for your Friday Reads, I have read several, and have more on my TBR list.

College age me was obsessed with ER. Several years later I had a baby and was not interested in staying up until 10pm to watch a soap opera! 😂😂

My husband and I are also enjoying The Pitt. I like the structure of the hours of a doctor's work shift.

Me too! I wasn’t sure I was going to like it, but I really do. It allows you to follow the full trajectory of a patient in the ER.

ER is the reason why my little sister became a nurse. Not the only reason but she qualified 2003. We were obsessed with that show.

Based in Joel’s recommendation I just finished Unreasonable Hospitality. I have both of Daniel Blacks books to read next, as well as Grief is Love. Some people don’t realize how devastating it is to lose a pet. Years back we had a sick dog. My husband called me at work to say she had passed way. I started to cry and my co worker asked me what was wrong. I told her my dog had died and she said , oh and just walked away.

Oh WOW! I can’t believe someone would do that. How awful. I don’t understand how some people cannot see the loss of a pet as a devastating thing. I’m sorry that happened to you! I hope you like the Daniel Black books, and that you get as much out of Grief is Love that I did.

Oy. I have overdosed on the library. Right now, I’ve got 7 physical books and 6 audiobooks out and another 9 (6 and 3) on hold. I’m hoping there won’t be holds from other people on these books so I’ll have a little more time with them, but I can always get back on the list. I just added Four Squares to my hold list from watching this video! I never take this many books out of the library at once! I’m still making my way through Josephine Tey’s The Daughter of Time (fiction). It’s only 206 pages and I’m halfway through now, but my historical knowledge of ancient British kings is slowing me down a bit. I think I’m through that bit now and it should move a bit faster. It’s about a current (1950s) look into Richard III and the two princes he is supposed to have killed. Fascinating stuff for me. After that, I have to dig into some library books. I haven’t gotten to Isaac’s Song yet, but hope to read it before the end of the month. It’s waiting patiently. No TV for me. I think the last thing I watched on my actual television was The Power of the Dog when it premiered on December 1st, 2021. I do watch some movies on my iPad though. I hope to watch The Creature from the Black Lagoon shortly, to pair up with the biography by Mallory O’Meara on the creature’s creator that I read and loved in January.

I have read both Four Squares and The Old Place. Four Squares will not go south. The Old Place, I thought was not as good, but it was worth reading and I am looking forward to his next book

Perceival Everett won the Andrew Carnegie Medal for Fiction this week. Now that he has won the National Book Award and the Andrew Carnegie medal I wonder if this improves or reduces his chances for Pulitzer. I loved Isaac's Song.

It’s honestly so hard to tell. I like to think that James can overcome being the obvious front runner just because it has become so undeniable, but the Pulitzer is gonna Pulitzer.

As a graduate of Pitt’s Library School and having worked at a UPMC (University of Pittsburgh Medical Center) Hospital I find it deeply ironic that the hospital that the Pitt is supposedly taking place at is one of the few hospitals in the city that is NOT part of the UPMC hospital system! I’m assuming Pitt declined to be involved in the show, or have one of its hospitals the face of the show. Where as Allegheny General saw it as a big middle finger to the Pitt system. In the 80s I used to live a few blocks from the hospital. The first place Willa Cather lived in the city and the high school she taught at are very close by too. It’s in what was originally called Allegheny City before being incorporated into Pittsburgh proper. Gertrude Stein was born and lived there (hotbed of Lesbianism writers I guess!) and the Ferris Wheel and Jehovah’s Witnesses were also created nearby! I hope future episodes open up further into the city besides the first episodes shots and that we will see Sean Hatosey again before the day’s up.

@2:20 This post may get deleted, but... Hundreds of Beavers, the movie is here on KZbin, free with Ads. If you like Looney Tunes cartoons or Monty Python, it may be of interest. Stick with the film until the end. It's a cute little film made on a $150k budget. I like supporting the underdog, and it's definitely an underdog film with no major studio support. Not Rated 148 minutes Black and white ~ A drunken applejack salesman must go from zero to hero and become North America's greatest fur trapper by defeating hundreds of beavers.
