In the UK we call them sound moderators. They're currently classified as firearms and so need to be held on a licence (if you already hold a firearm on said licence then you're pretty much guaranteed authorisation for a moderator), however we have just held a consultation to review their status with the intention of making them an non-restricted item like magazines/stocks/optics etc.

Lol. A lot of cans go below hearing safe with supersonic ammo. Silencers were around LONG before subs because popular. Even nowadays, trying to find subs is difficult. They're plentiful online, but not locally. You may find 9mm and .22, but that's it.

I call it suppressor to prevent confusing people because when people hear "silencer" they think it almost completely silences the gun if they don't know anything about guns and really the main reasons to use a suppressor are either you're trying to reduce hearing damage or you're trying to ruduce muzzle flash at night so you don't immediately get gunned down as soon as you fire a shot in the dark

Yep same here. I've actually convinced some of my anti-gun coworkers that they don't actually silence the gun (in most cases). They were shocked that you still (generally) have to wear hearing protection when shooting with one.

Silencer is used in the literal paper work of the first "suppressor". It's interchangeable. Clip and mag are also the same, both are used in the orgins of the OG invention. Google is so cool.

The debate between suppressor and silencer is always solved by citing federal agencies... But the peeple who determine the nomenclature don't know either. I'm an armorer in the military, the nomenclature for the KAC M4 is suppressor. On a few of our sniper rifles it is called a silencer. They do the same job, but personally suppressor sounds better to me.
