IS THAT A SUPRA?! No - two actually.
The A80 Mk4 Supra was a supercar killer fresh out of the factory. Car magazines at the time pitched it against the Porsche 911 Turbo, the Ferrari Testarossa, and the Aston Martin DB7. That still didn't stop people over time from tuning these monsters through the roof thanks to that legendary 2JZ engine. The A80 was sadly withdrawn from all markets by 2002. But after a long hiatus of the Supra badge, we now have the latest-generation A90, developed in partnership with BMW.

@@Pk1998AMG right. The 2021+ is 382 bhp and dynos over that number. But 2021 isn't easily tuneable where the 2020 has a traditional tune process. The a90 should be modded too (if it wasn't, I didn't see)

Ok, so new supra feels good (a generic statement used to describe every car in this series) feels like a BMW (never heard that one before) and the old car is legendary and modified (no indictation to what exactly has been done to it). There was nothing new in this video. It's staggering how you've made a video like this with all that talent and material to your disposal. I'd recommend everybody to go over to the Hagerty channel to check out what a good company backed effort looks like. Also which lunatic decided to tune an auto Supra like that?

@@howardbrandon11 I belive all countries that recivied the MK4 got the same versions as everyone else just certain things to diffrent to make the diffrent according to the countries laws. but auto vs auto makes no sense. The MK4 has a much older gearbox, a lot slower than the MK5. And it pretty difficult to get a MK4 that is stock. Most has atleast something aftermarket on them. My MK4 was revived from a scrapyard, so barely any Original parts, any parts that were original were super expensive to buy.

Spite from Japan maybe 😂 The one used in this video was obviously tuned a bit, they probably allowed it to make up for that dog of an auto it has! Controversial option the old Supra isn’t very good and is only liked because of its strong engine. It’s an absolute boat of a car that’s far too big and heavy to be a good sports car

Ironically same thing can be said about the Lexus LFA….. take away it’s amazing engine and it is a relatively heavily (for what it is) car with numb handling and slow shifting transmission. Toyota really struggles with building proper drivers sports cars. Thank god for the GR86 and Corolla/Yaris GR

You clearly were not old enough to remember the impact the A80 Supra had when it was new. I do, I had many magazines back in the 90's when the MK4 was new. It shocked the sports car world by beating Ferrari 348, Porsche 911 Turbo, corvette ZR1 and even Ferrari testarossa. It had higher grip in the skidpad than all of the cars mentioned. The A80 had a braking record that was only beaten by the Porsche Carrera GT supercar.

Pretty bad comparison, it should be either stock-for-stock or both are tuned, not a mix. Seriously, even car KZbinrs can find stock or restored-to-stock A80s, you had a chance to really put away some of the rose tinted glasses and show how the A80 actually stacks up against it's modern sibling and you blew it. Only reason the MK4 is still really talked about is because of its role in F&F. It's not because it was a ground breaking car or even that great during its time. It was never much of a handler. It has a robust engine, that's about it. That doesn't make it a great drivers car like the cult status makes people think. It's a barge. Unless I want something with insane tuned-power levels that goes quickly in a straight line with big turbo lag, I can think of many, many cars I'd rather have. Even with that description, I'd rather have a big-power modern GTR. 90's Japanese cars, NSX hands down. NSX is a special car with a lot of firsts. Supra is an average car with a strong engine.

Hey Top Gear, I’d recommend that you consider bringing Matt Watson on in a regular way to interject some review of the week, buying strategies and a drag race with the regular presenters. A partnership with Carwow might really work. Patty, Chris and Andrew are good but I’m sure it’s been mentioned that there is still a missing element. Matt Watson might finally bring the spark back to TopGear
