If the weapon is exposed to a gun-hater and they get scared it becomes an assault?

If it looks scary then its an assault weapon, if it's functionally identical but looks friendly then its a firearm.

Any weapon used in an assault, and what qualifies as a weapon is any item used to cause harm, so using a pillow to smother someone technically is an assault weapon.
