I know the video is relatively old by now, but i would like to give you a suggestion, incase you don't already know. Instead of researching early techs like "Semi-Automatic Rifles" you should buy them from a friendly nation and focus your research mainly to techs that can't be traded or no-one has. That way you can get the early tech quicker and in many cases even cheaper than researching them by yourself. Same goes with military units.
