Hi! Thanks for the good explanation! Ontario Government says "a permanent label from the manufacturer in both English and French stating that your e-bike conforms to the federal definition of a power-assisted bicycle".... mine was bought from the US and sure thing they don't have any labels like this, I certainly can provide the spec sheet of my bike but it will be extremely challenging to get a label. Any advice? Thanks!
@jackdeth613 Жыл бұрын
They must have removed this requirement... Now the site states: E-bike requirements To operate an e-bike in Ontario, the e-bike must have: a maximum assisted speed of 32 km/h a maximum weight of 120 kg (includes the weight of the bike and battery) an electric motor not exceeding 500 watts no modifications to the motor to allow it to exceed a power output greater than 500 watts and an assisted speed greater than 32 km/h battery and electric motor securely fastened to the bicycle frame to prevent them from moving while the e-bike is operating all electrical terminals properly insulated minimum wheel width of 35 mm and minimum diameter of 350 mm two independent braking systems that applies force to each wheel and is capable of bringing the e-bike, while being operated at a speed of 30 km/h, to a full stop within 9 metres, on a level asphalt surface, from the point at which the brakes were applied Removing the pedals makes the e-bike a motor vehicle, which requires a licence, insurance and registration to operate. It is also illegal to modify your e-bike's electric motor to make it more powerful or to increase the assisted speed of the bike.

Si je dois rouler en voie publiques, je dois l’assurer et l’immatriculer, mais par contre, je ne peux pas l’employer dans les forêts. @@Adampage69 like you said, it depends on the cop. In B.C. they charged someone for riding the dinky electric scooter thing and it went all the way to the Supreme Court and the defendant lost. Even with the pedals attached, it’s technically supposed to only move when the pedals are turned (pedal assist). That’s how they will get you in B.C. ; you will not be able to insure the bike and they hand you an uninsured vehicle ticket. Sucks. Only ride this thing off-road to be 100% safe. I suppose 20 mph is a reasonable speed, I can see the lawmakers are intending electric bikes for easy hill climbing, rather than giving them a faster top speed than a regular bicycle. My Bafang kit can be speed limited, although the throttle does not obey the selected limit and can continue to function at any speed the bike is geared to do. Mine I set to 45kph/28 mph in order that I could pedal in town without adding excessive power that would cause me to exceed the speed limit/speed of cars in front of me. Then I could add a bit of throttle if the road started going faster than that (town limit is 30 mph although many drivers like to do 35 even police cars if there's room, police typically turning a blind eye to anyone not exceeding the upper 30s if the road is clear.) 15.5 mph around here makes them safer on bike paths. Although that is technically not the top speed but above that it's legs only. Despite my bike being significantly faster than this, I haven't been bugged by police. Arm signals, obeying lights and not speeding down paths or riding on pavements - basic common sense. You are trying to avoid the stereotypical anti-social tracksuit teenager road rule breaker image. Although if you get in an accident you are less likely to be in good standing. Andy Kirby actually managed to get a bike registered as a moped and pass an MSVA test which gives you information about lights, braking, signals, mirrors and bodywork to make your bike fully road legal. I'm not sure the purpose of a power limit, as a 2,000 watt motor limited to 15 mph will not increase the top speed over a bicycle with no motor of its own. It will get to 15 very quickly, and above that, acceleration will be according to the speed of your legs. You can cross 30 mph with an added 250 watt motor reasonably easily if you're pedaling and not dressed like a parachute. I would expect power to have more of a blind eye turned towards it than how fast it is - after all, 150 watt motor could give me the performance of the world's top cyclists if it is allowed to assist at any speed, whereas a 3kw with an assist limit of 15.5 will be slower on flat ground than the former, though it will accelerate and climb hills like a champ - provided it's a mid-drive or a low speed high torque motor. The pedals on mine function a lot better than on this one. The seat is the proper height (well actually a bit too high) but unfortunately the seat post is rusted in place. I can pedal it to somewhere in the 20s although it depends how I'm dressed and which way the wind is blowing, but it's as fast as a heavy mountain bike (25kg) with smooth tyres. There is a bit more friction in the bottom bracket than a standard bike, though only a few watts. It can boost the available power and battery life by a significant margin and be pedaled along slow bike paths easily. On hills it's a bit of effort - a heavy bike with a single 52 tooth chainring and 32-12 cassette is not the best choice for riding up a mountain on human effort alone. My lighter and lower geared Saracen Helix does the job way better as a regular bicycle.

Ebikes that look like bicycles, can also go 60kph and cops wont bat an eye. But if "bicycle" has to look like a rocket for some reason, then it will obviously catch more attention from the cops. Same apply to cars as well. A red ferrari catches way more attention than a grey volvo. A grey volvo going 50 over, would cause the cop to turn around and go back to station, because "obviously" their equipment is malfunctioning. A red ferrari going 50 over would cause the cop to make a call to the station and all channels for air and road reinforcements and start chasing the bad boy. You are riding those stylish things to grab attention, and you want to discriminate against whose attention you grab? Think about it.

An you make a vid on how you installed the switch
@Adampage69 Жыл бұрын
the switch was for older models that had a green and black wire that you needed to cut to get the max power so you would have to cut it and solder each ends to a on and off switch

I wish you could actually a PAS system with peddling a suron, but that would mean adding an actual crank and bike drivetrain which wouldn't entirely work for it's top speed off-road mode. I have a Rize Blade 2 that tops out at around 48km/h but it can be peddled for calorie workout. Otherwise, I would have gotten a sur ron!

To be clear even if I did these mods to a bike like this and was on "street legal mode" and a cop pulled me over and I didnt have a license I would get a warning or a ticket, at least in shitty Ontario. Any thoughts anyone? ;)
