Early Muslims understood the Quran well. It led them to discover stars, most of the stars have Arabic names. They worked on Astronomy until 15th C, the last Muslim scientist was Ulug Beg, he was also a Islamic scholar. He built an observatory in Bukhara/ Samarkand ( Islamic university of Bukhara) It is interesting to note that Muslim scientists in the past were also Scholars. That tells us that Quran was understood differently than today. Their way of understanding helped them to research and discover and develop technology

Kaab Al Ahbaar was a jewish convert and was a student of Abu Hurayra. Kaab was considered someone who would mix up jewish tales and folklore with islamic teachings, not out of bad faith or anything. Read Sahih Muslim if you want to verify it.
