Thanks a lot for the wonderful session, ma'am. Precision: The prefix "pre-" means "before." "Cision" relates to words like "excision," "incision," or "cesarean," and therefore means "to cut." Precision literally means that an instrument has been cut or damaged in a way that it misses the original target. For example, if you are using a sniper rifle and it is damaged in such a way that it consistently hits a point below the target, all your shots will cluster below the actual target. Even though you are not hitting the intended target, the shots are grouped closely together because your gun has been damaged in a very specific way. The expression cut out refers to how something is formed because, in older times and still today, many instruments or weapons are made by cutting them in a particular way. For example, one could say, I am not cut out to become a surgeon; I would rather be a physician or something else. So, precision can metaphorically mean being made in a particular way. Precision is all about consistently hitting the same point, even if that point is not the intended target. Accuracy sounds like "cure," so accuracy refers to actually hitting or curing the target. In summary: Precision is about consistently hitting the same point, even if that point is not the target, while accuracy is about hitting the actual target. "Re" means "again," for example: recap, retry, respect (to see again), etc. Therefore, if "re" means "again," then reliability means getting the same result again and is roughly the same as precision. _________ Sensitivity is like a sensitive person. If he/she reacts, we can't be sure if there is a problem, but if there is a problem, we are very likely to get a reaction from that sensitive person. Specificity is like a man who only loves his wife and does not love others. He is specific to one person, and other women should not evoke feelings in him. If there are two people, and both of them are somewhat sensitive, then at least one of them will react if there is a problem. This means the combined sensitivity is very high. But if there are two people, and both of them are somewhat sensitive and specific, then at least one of them is likely to react even if no problem is present, it means the reaction is not specific to whether or not a problem exists. Combined specificity is low. _________ Lead time can be seen from two angles. The first is the amount of time the disease usually leads in terms of pathophysiology; it is the disease that is leading, not us-we are actually lagging. Another way to look at this is how much time we can possibly lead if we are a little vigilant and don't rely solely on traditional methods of diagnosis. _________
