It's actually probably the most played map on the server if you go by the sum of individual hours, as in, add the amount of hours each person has on the map together. Most played on the server goes by how long that map has been live for, which is disproportionately skewed towards omnific because of how long it takes to grind WR (rulldar, trofle, sinsa, etc.)

It's for a lot of reasons. It is definitely an old map, but there are a lot of those. I like to think of 666 as a milestone checker. The reason for this is, it's a 6 staged map, and every stage is its tier. So if you're a beginner surfer and can do utopia, and air control, and whatever other tier 1s, you can do stage 1. And if you've been surfing for a few weeks now and have really gotten the hang of airstrafing and smoothness, you're now able to complete stage 2 and maybe 3. It's a map that gets linearly more difficult, and allows for someone at any level of surfing ability to find a challenge. This is most important for tier 6 surfers, though, as completing tier 6s was (until very recently) the greatest possible achievement in surf behind a WR. This has been "THE" map for a long, long time, that tells you "you are now one of the top surfers in the world. You've done it, you're a tier 6 surfer. You've finished stage 6 of surf_666." And then, it beckons: "Now one-shot it." And so they try. Then map becomes the most played map of all time. Now Corruption has sort of ruined that. And the handful of tier 7s that are magnitudes harder than surf_666. But only Corruption really is anywhere near the level of notoriety and achievement of surf_666. It's also just a really good map for its time.
