You just spooled a twist in your line. The line should come off the spool and go on the real the same way. At least that’s how we do it in the tackle shop. Also a heavier shock leader OF MONO Not BRAID will help you casting heavier weight to distance without breaking your main line.

Chip you are wealth of knowledge. I find myself having alot questions but I'll keep it relevant to the video. As I was told pompano are sight feeders, if finishing for Pompano and Whiting, and plan on using using a 4oz Spunik sinker should I use 40lbs. shock leader or something smaller like a 30lbs.shock leader?

Mark great question. I would use the size you feel comfortable with and not lose your terminal tackle. Some elite casters can use 17lb and not throw off the sinker. This isn't very many people and it costs them lots of money when they try to go to small. I use 50lb shock and don't have trouble catching fish.

Are you sure those aren't centauri knots braid to mono? Uni's are made in a different fashion. I subscribe. Going to use your leader with figure 8's and snoods. Snood loop needs to crimp/pinch down end to get small knot connect to leader. Especially using 40 lb snoods.

What rod do you use, I was thinking of converting my tournament reels to fishing reels? Both are Abu CT6500, Blue Rocket and Green Rocket. I’m using a Custom 2pc 1pc rod and Breakaway HDX and HDX Tournament Rods. I also have several Diawa Sealine X20’s.

Can you use a spinning surf rod or do you need a special type?

Why mono first and braid for the shock leader? I've seen it done just the opposite.

Thanks for the video.

There's actually two reasons for this 1 is Braid will slip if tied directly to the real without some sort of backing. So most people either use electrical tape or start off with mono and then tie braid to that. Second is that braid is typically more expensive than mono so most people will spool part of the Reel with monofilament then finish off with braid. most times you will never see the mono unless the fish takes a lot of line. As far as the use of a shock leader, it's best to use heavyweight mono because it allows for stretch and braids will not.

Paul Kinney I am sorry I missed this message! The reason I throw mono and a braid shock leaders is for two reason! 1). Throwing a 5 oz sinker creates a great stress on mono and after it stretches so many times it is going to break. Losing your rig and also your sinker! 2) If I was to run braid and a mono shock at 40-50lb the UNI know would be extremely large and over time will ruin the guide in your fishing pole!

retired Navy trying to move my family to the JAX/MAYPORT area. I am an experienced SF OBX, other places. where would I find your rates for guiding? I'd like to teach my grandson the heavenly experience that is SF, while trying to hedge my bets on catching. How do I best contact you for seasons, fish, places, and guide rates? Thanks very much!
