A big thanks for your tip about never using braid as a leader. Just starting to use braid now after returning to fishing after a 20+ year no fishing period, I was wondering about trying braid as my leader. I've seen posts that warn against wrapping braid on the hand to break stuck lines but it never dawned on me about a wigging fish with a braid leader. Saved me from some cuts.

Interesting, never thought of that, have a long leader and just wind it on the spool is an option. One thing if the existing swivel is already there on the line, your replacement leaders just need line and a tac clip on the end, you’re going to have to make one tie in any case, use the existing swivel. Would be nice if there was some quick connect option where no tying is needed.

Good information on here but I do think that you ought to have a Public Service Announcement stating the leader you are demonstrating is for artificial lures and not bottom sighing with heavy weight. For your safety and those around you on the beach; a shock leader is necessary to prevent or greatly reduce break-offs. A shock leader will also save your rigs so you wont loose them as fast.

If you use lures, swivel helps you to prevent line twisting on spinning reels especially with braided line,

gettting a 10ft pole for surf fishing. What a good weight braid line to use 30-40lbs 40-60lbs? mainly for stripes and blues

Here's a basic tip: when you use a *4oz casting weight* for example, multiply it with 10. Which means you need at least a *40lb SHOCK leader* (which is NOT what HE's talking about) attached to your main line. So when using a 5oz casting weight > 50lb shock leader. And so on. Your main line depends on what your reel can handle the best and what kinda fish you expect to catch (their weight and fighting capabilities). For stripe and blues I would go for 30lb main line and 40-50-60 lb shock leader (depending on your casting weight of course). Also, keep an eye on how much casting weight your rod can handle. :) 15ft rods here, surf casting too. LOVE IT! :) Hope this helps you out a bit. Cheers.

Use a uni knot or an improved clinch knot, easier to tie

They all work, and everyone's got their favorite, but you can't get simpler than a clinch knot (not an improved clinch knot), especially with heavy leader material. Tie them at home, wet em, pull em tight and it'll seat and be solid. I've found the extra step of the improved clinch makes it more difficult to seat the knot when using 50 lb + leader material.

A couple inches directly to the swivel. Yes, the same swivel your leader is attached to. Another way is to tie your leader with a dropper loop 18-36 inches above the clip/lure.

You are confusing a "Leader" with a "Shock Leader" The purpose of a shock leader (Line from bait to reel with a couple wraps on the reel} is to take the shock of casting a heavy bait/weight with lighter line.

Glad to know that I'm not the only one who noticed his serious mistake! Yes, the reason why people use a long SHOCK leader is.... yeah well, the name says it all: to take the shock of your heavy CW/bait/whatever out of your mainline. If you wouldn't use a shock leader everything on your mainline would go flying everywhere the moment you cast. With some bad luck straight towards the public with a very high chance of causing serious injuries. What he's talking about is a removable RIG and how to set it up. So it goes this way. Main line > shock leader with casting weight > rig/leader with hooks, bait and small lead to keep the rig down or beads to keep the rig floating above the casting weight. God, I hope no one makes the mistake to actually really think that he's talking about shock leaders there and use this method for it. I cringe at the thought that someone might actually hurt or kill someone because some "idiot" spreads seriously wrong and dangerous information.

I need some noob help with Shock Leader length, please! How many yards of mainline do I spool and how many yards do I spool the Shock Leader? 13' Squal40 setup. I keep seeing 2 rod lengths and 6 times around the spool. My question is the 6x around the spool. Does that mean just 6 loops or 6 full coverage layers across the spool? Thanks for your time! Like where do I want my knot to be, buried and pulled out when on strike/drag or out and through the cast? Thanks!

They suck when you tie your mainline to the wrong end of the clip (user issue). Or if you use a heavy clip on a small bait it might change the action. I get the idea he just gets pissed off a lot, even when he is most likely the problem.
