It's a good laptop with great specs and I like it. And the feel of the soft touch material is great and having windows hello facial recognition is awesome. But there are some downsides. The soft touch material is nice, but I feel like that is the only material present, as the deck flex is fairly noticable. The screen is amazing, and it's great to have a touchscreen, but in 2021 I would like thinner bezels. And I would prefer 2 usb c ports for charging than 1 proprietary. It's also super thin, and light. The track pad is Steller, with the glass finish making It the best track pad I have ever seen. At least I do have the ability to charge via the thunderbolt port with the io, but I still think that for the 1400 Cad$ I spent on it, it shouldnt have that proprietary charger. Okay, edit. After using it for a full day I have to say, one more massive pro for this laptop are the speakers. The dual speakers sound amazing.

I gotta say, the Surface Connect port ain't as bad as you are making it out to be. Sure, an extra USB-C port would have been good, but there are positives to it: 1) Backwards compatibility. This is a big thing for businesses who have already been buying Surface's. All the Docks still work, no need to change. Considering how poor cross compatibilty and reliability is for USB-C and Thunderbolt docks (it is a nightmare, let me tell you) this is a brillant for many companies out there. 2) Magnetic attachment. The detach mechanism will in many cases save the laptop or charger from being pulled and broken. Same as Magsafe used to do, which people still lament at the loss of. 3) Much easier to connect the charging cable. This is a big thing for those with disabilities or limited ability to force in a USB-C cable. It requires no effort to insert and can be done 1 handed. This sort of focus on making things available and usable for those with disabilities should be applauded, not derided. I get it, some people are morally against these propritary ports, but there are certainly benefits. If it really upsets you it's there, grab a less than $20 Surface Connect -> USB-C adapter and treat the port as a normal USB-C port for charging. Most won't give a data connection, only power, but it does leave the USB-C port open for other things.

Hi Matthew, thanks for the detailed comment. You raised some great points! Acknowledging the points you mentioned there are a few reasons why the proprietary port here is a poor choice of IO in my opinion. The Surface Laptop 4 offers a total 2 universal ports (USB-A and USB-C), given the size, price and function of this laptop that is at least one port less on average than the competition and in some cases even 2 ports less. A proprietary port is poor choice given those circumstances, also to your point about docking it the vast majority of surface laptop buyers are in fact consumers, most of which will have little to benefit from given the limited functionality of the Surface Connect Port. Lastly I would like to point out that the curved angle on the surface laptop actually makes it fairly difficult to insert the power pin into the port if the laptop is already sitting on a desk, its not as convenient as you may think.

For me personally the surface connect is a plus really. I tend to trip over wires a lot and that surface connect has been a lifesaver... For my laptop. Most of us are used to dongles anyways so that lack of port is a non issue for me

Why do you not like the magnetic charging cable? If it gets ripped out at least it won't pull your laptop with it like a USB would if it didn't disconnect.
@SoulOfTech3 жыл бұрын
That’s a fair point. But it’s about losing utility due to a port they can only perform a specific functions vs a port that can perform many.

I am not 100 percent sure, buy I have heard you can charge via the USB type C port.
@SoulOfTech3 жыл бұрын
Hi, you can indeed use the USB-C port to charge. My statement was to mention how the have a proprietary charging port as well that could have been more useful if it was a universal standard port like USB-C or HDMI port.
