i think it's safe to say there's finally a tablet that outperforms the xbox360 in terms of graphics. This is a huge deal, as 7 years ago there weren't even any tablets, and the xbox was far superior than any mobile device around.

I'm going to say the Xbox360 has been outperformed for ages now. Not just by laptops, but also by smartphones and tablets. Especially when you factor in how mobile gaming tends to do full HD gaming properly already. Thing is more how most games are designed around full spec dedicated graphics processors (preferably desktop cards with access to DX11 / DX12 in meaningful ways), not onboard stuff that's mostly just there to playback video in HD or maybe 4K at best. I'm going to say an onboard graphics card with a bit more memory available might actually run games at even more acceptable speeds. I mean dedicated memory, not shared stuff that isn't remotely as fast. With dedicated mobile graphics cards becoming a new standard for laptops, it will not take very long before we get to see desktop performance in a portable form factor. The new Surface Book with dGPU probably even is a step towards tablets getting ever closer to what a gaming laptop can do. (Understandably the current generation Surface Book dGPU 2016 won't do high-end gaming, but the dedicated GPU is definitely a step in the right direction to allow for gaming in future generations).

You can increase performance by removing intel dynamic platform thermal management before entering the game because it auto reinstalls on starts up , since it throttles to 10watt on new windows update, and use intel XTU to undervolt and increase wattage to 20watt you will see impressive gains in performance.

Great comparison work man. Minecraft has such a hard power throttle... overall I am happy with the i7 and most of the game results I've been getting were more or less expected. But I am disappointed in the power throttle and thought that better results were going to be produced by now. It seems this is all we can do... a little undervolting. I wonder if Microsoft will make any adjustments or an option in the future to turn down the power throttle a notch. MICROSOFT, UNLEASH THE FULL POWER OF THE i7 540! We're begging you! 15watt limit though...

+Maik Kottcke Minecraft has always been horrible with CPU usage in general even on systems where the hardware acceleration is optimal. Unfortunately I think we're at the end of the road with squeezing performance out until MS makes an update. It would be awesome to config per-game but I feel like that's just a dream. The problem is that the 15 watt limitation is what Intel recommends, so of course that is what MS follows. The question is... what are the actual effects of exceeding the limit for extended periods of time? If it can seriously burn up or damage the unit in some way, we will never get the option to disable it... MS doesn't want to have to warranty of bunch of 'overclockers.'

So far, here are some of my games I found that run great on the Surface Pro 4 (i5 8gb ram): Southpark Stick of Truth (native resolution too!), BroForce (native), Mortal Kombat Komplete (720), Bioshock Infinite (720), Skyrim (1080) and Ducktales Remastered (native). GTAV runs decent enough to play (lowest resolution possible), but not as good as others.

I dunno if this is the ultimate guide, I'd have preferred to see each game played a bit on each device vs wandering in a single area. Playing the game where there's things happening such as particle effects, explosions, other characters moving is a lot more telling. I hope you're not running all of these native or that's really going to push them beyond their abilities. Running games around the 720p mark gives far more playable results.

Will the i5 throttle as well? I didn't see any throttling with the i5, only the i7. Is the throttling due to increased thermal loads? I'm wondering if an extra fan can be added somewhere (I'm an engineer, I can make it happen) to the i7 would that prevent throttling.

+441meatloaf If the i5 meets your standard for performance in the applications you use, yeah just get the i5, hell get the m3 if that fits your performance needs. The i7 is more power hungry, but it has extra performance to match, it can do more work in a smaller amount of time and then enter lower power sleep states, which can translate into less power used overall. Intel engineers call this "race to sleep" I have seen no evidence that the SP4 i7 has any less battery life than the i5. I've performed plenty of tests showing that the i7 performs much faster, does not even come close to overheating, and is perfectly suitable for the SP4 chassis.

Very cool results! So if the SP4 cooling seems able to handle 15W without any thermal throttling, have you tried simply increasing the base TDP/power (assuming this is possible in XTU) of the chip to be closer to the initial PL2 level? i.e. 20-25W? It would be interesting to see how much the cooling can handle before thermal throttling kicks in and increasing the power limit should directly move performance more towards what you get in the initial ~30 seconds.

cbutters Sorry, I should have been more specific. You need a notebook with a mobile GTX series GPU in it. Even the GT series aren't really meant for gaming. I mean if you are intent on PC gaming on a notebook computer, Intel HD is nowhere near being in a position of offering a good/decent PC gaming experience. Look at the GTX 980m, which is about as powerful as a DESKTOP GTX 780. That is amazing. Intel HD has come a long way, and it amazes me sometimes by what it can do, but I would rather not play games then have to deal with turning all the settings down, especially resolution? Ugh. Don't get me wrong, if someone is looking to just play some older games, or an MMO or something, Intel HD would probably be ok. However if brand new AAA's are something they'd like to play as well, you have to have a dedicated GPU in your notebook, and like I said, preferably a GTX 860m and up at this point to be able to play new games on the same level as the consoles.
@cbutters
@cbutters 8 жыл бұрын
+gamer taboo You miss the point of these comparisons. Most people buying a surface are buying it for many different reasons than someone buying a gaming notebook. They buy it for portability, for work, for graphical design and note-taking. A distant 3rd or 4th down the priority list is how well it games. Many people would NEVER buy a gigantic notebook with a 980m inside it as it is just not practical. Many even have a powerful gaming workstation (i have a 980 Ti / 5960X machine at home.) The fact that you can do some pretty decent gaming on the machine is a delicious perk of the device. Even the Intel 520 GPU on the i5 version can play League of Legends all day long on MAXIMUM graphics settings at more that 60FPS at the surfacebook's 3000x2000 Resolution. (This is the equivalant of 6K by the way) It is misleading to say that these integrated graphics (and even lower end Nvidia dgpus) are not capable or meant to provide a gaming experience. These latest gen integrated graphics are not the old GMA 900s of the past which yes couldn't play hardly anything and were plagued by driver issues as well. This is simply not the case anymore. I don't want a 6-7 lb gaming machine, I want a svelte professional device and if it can let me play counterstrike at 100+FPS as well, then thats just icing on the cake, I'll do my high end gaming at home.
@cdurkinz
@cdurkinz 8 жыл бұрын
cbutters Well, I never said that Intel HD isn't capable of playing games, but they aren't meant for playing brand new AAA games. I mean that's just fact. I also mentioned that Intel HD would be fine for MMOrpg's, because MMO's rely more heavily on the CPU than the GPU. Also, I don't know why you think 3000x2000 is equivelant to "6k" when 4k resolution is 3840x2160. Counter-Strike, again a "source" game, and I imagine you're talking about CS:GO, which released in 2012, or LoL in 2009, are not the types of games I was talking about. I'm not sure why you are getting so overly defensive, I gave Intel HD the credit it deserves. It is NOT some amazing graphics solution, for gaming or for any type of professional work, although the surface pro 4 itself is a great alternative to Wacom's in various ways. I understand that some people are not buying it just for gaming, and already mentioned that, which is fine and if that's the case then the fact that you can run plenty of titles that have already been released is just a plus. Like I said, Intel HD will play older games and MMO's, but if you are looking for something to play new Triple-A games at least as well as a console, Intel HD isn't going to cut it. Now whether or not 6-7 pounds is "gigantic" to you or not is irrelevant. You can buy nice skinny little gaming notebooks that barely weigh anything if you're that concerned about it. Although if you go that route you will have to deal with throttling issues, much the same as the surface pro suffers from. Thankfully there are ways around that. If you had any clue how many people flood the forums for every new game that releases with their Intel HD only laptop's and desktops asking why the game isn't working for them, only to be extremely disappointed when I or someone else explains to them why, you might add a disclaimer to your videos on it. Intel HD is fine for LIGHT gaming, and LIGHT work, and that's about it. I understand that not everyone has the time to learn about computer hardware thoroughly before they make a purchase, which is the only reason why I even said something in the first place.
@cbutters
@cbutters 8 жыл бұрын
+gamer taboo Oh Snap... you got me on the 4k thing, Lapse of judgement there... I was calculating 3000x2000 to get 6M pixels, and somehow confused that for 6K. my bad on that. In general I think we are saying the same things. I am a little over defensive just because on the reverse end we get 1000s of people flooding the surface forums of people asking if they can play WOW or LOL on the new surfaces, which is definitely a resounding "YES" and as you understand it can play those games quite well. I just don't want people thinking they can't game on a surface, because especially the i7 version can play 90% of popular games quite well. Heck I can even play GTA V at 40-50 FPS at 1600x900 resolution. Lowered settings sure, but it probably looks about as good as an xbox one. But yeah I'm not trying to be confrontational (comments on youtube always seem to sound that way) I think we are saying the same things so I appreciate your perspective.

Great video! Sorry for this noob question... May I just ask, what is throttling? And what is undervolt?
@cbutters
@cbutters 7 жыл бұрын
Throttling is whenever the processor stops operating at its full capacity due to power or thermal limits. (kindof like a governor in a car) a computer's processor will "throttle" or lower the operating frequency if the computer thinks it is creating too much heat or using too much power. Undervolting is reducing the voltage of electricity supplied to the processor, more voltage = more heat, so undervolting can make your processor run cooler. If a processor is running cooler, it might not throttle as much. this dynamic means you can potentially get more performance out of an undervolted chip because less heat lets it run faster. One thing to understand is that undervolting does not introduce a performance penalty; you simply reach a point where if you undervolt too far, you chip is unstable. So it is in your best interest to find the level of voltage that allows the cpu to function properly, but not too much voltage creating unnecessary heat.

Hypothesis: I doubt it. It's very rare for changing thermal paste to make a significant difference in temps unless its like a decade old. The only time I've seen a significant difference is when I delidded a 3770k and used liquid metal between the die and the hsf. And even that wasn't because of the paste or the seating but the adhesive gap between the hsf and the die. Undervolting is probably safer and more beneficial.

what is undervolting?
@ega919
@ega919 8 жыл бұрын
+Pjiggy Electric power is the result of electric current multiplied by voltage. (P = A * U) Since the voltage is pretty much a set constant, the electric current has to increase in order to deliver more power. Now what power throtteling does, it limits the maximum amount of power the processor is allowed to use. If P is constant and you decrease the value of U (voltage), your A (electric current) can get higher which results in better performance. However, you only can decrease the voltage to a certain extent before you will experience system instabilities.

+DarkJackal1223 I am partial to the surface line... its the best tabletpc in my opinion and I've owned a lot. So it will come down to price. For the 600-800 price range, get a Surface Pro 3 (find a manufacturer refurbished that includes a type cover) For 800-1300 price range, the Pro 4 M3 is great, but for not much more the SP4 i5 is worth it. The i7 is pricier so it won't be worth it for everyone, but if you want to maximize your gaming power, its the most powerful thing in its weight class. I would avoid the Surface 3 (non-pro) because of its molasses slow eMMC storage solution; and the SP3 is so much quicker for not much more money.

+cbutters thz for the reply but a question on another tablet. Whats your opinion about the Dell Venue 11 pro 7000 (7140) or the XPS 12 2-in-1? I see they have a special financing for O% apr for 12 months (or six it seems with the Venue) and with the money Im getting for my laptop i should be able to buy it and have it paid off fast. They seem to have a great deal on the Venue with 330 dollars off. Sadly if i were to get the XPS I don't see the need in the 4k display but I would have loved the extra storage.

I got the SP3 i7 and thought it was complete trash. No idea why it got so many stars. After a few minutes of playing a game the fan jet engines kicked in and the starting throttling. Heard the SP4 doesnt have that issue. The fan still spins (no idea how loud) and it doesnt throttle. Im debating looking into the new tablets by HP and Lenovo that will have the m5 and m7 instead. Should i skip over the SP4 if i hated the SP3?

Well I was curious because i play indie or slightly less demanding games. (Shadowrun or Company of Heroes). Which dont need a graphics card to max out. But SP3 would make a fuss over those. Im waiting on the reviews from the m5 and m7s tablets. But if not i think SP4 i5 would be my next choice.

+PocketGroove82 Thing is, this is power throttling. This could happen in more than just games as it is CPU dependent rather than GPU dependent. I'm not worried about gaming, but on the go video editing and 3D art.
@myrhev
@myrhev 8 жыл бұрын
+PocketGroove82 it wouldn't be my primary device either. I'm waffling between a SP4 as a laptop and digital art pad vs buying a Wacom cintiq (not cintiq companion).

+PocketGroove82 I'm not a digital artist. I dabble with 3d sculpting (poorly). I do video editing on the side and hope it eventually expands to full time. I don't like the cintiq companion 2. Oh well, guess I'll look into the cintiq touch.

+BharathMartin Its a surface Pro 4 i7 vs i5 graphics (dgpu disabled) it is the exact same chip that is in the SP4 i5, which is not a perfect comparison you are right, but it was the best proxy test device available and results are confirmed at this point.

+cbutters Got it! I thought its the comparison of i5, i7 models of Surface Pro 4. My bad, I should have noticed HD520 Vs HD540. Any way Nice work.

This tread claims that throttling could be eliminated by ice cube: www.reddit.com/r/Surface/comments/3uu2xu/yes_the_surface_pro_4_has_thermal_throttling_but/ This is strange , why fan you tried did not make any difference?

+AlexxZhulin This is absolutely right.... I had my fan pointed at the wrong spot, I just tried with a bag of water and it indeed helps performance!

He's obviously not the smartest guy I think he at least knows how to copy settings over from each other. What do I mean by that? He doesn't realize when you look away from a bunch of crap it increases fps (as shown in the portal one where he says while he's looking at a wall with the i7 and looking at the entire map with the i5 that the i5 is really slowing down).

Thx for the video ! I search a solution for mine, i mean i cant run gta V or other games smoothly, for gta its 800X600 20 fps ... updated drivers, run on high performance, allocating more ram, not so many programs run, and my game is crap as fuck. Anyone have solutions ? Its insane, when i buy something, i expect the real performance, not 50% of my product. Imagine you go to mercedes, ok i buy amg but seller tell you, mr blue, you cant excess 50 mph, its ridiculous ... Apologies for my english, but im really angry tbh

I really hope they integrate a tunderbolt 3 in the surface pro 5 (with some eGPU), else the transformer pro 3 from Asus will have the lead.

***** I didn't make a comment about most games. I made a comment about minecraft, which performs worse on the i7 by default. Also, there is a person who cares, the person who made the video, and likely most people who go out looking for this video and then choose to watch it. Why on earth are you replying to me and intentionally ignoring both what I said in the comment and what is shown in the video. Do you really gain some sort of satisfaction on being needlessly contrary and intentionally thick in youtube comments?
