Repairing a ding on an EPS surfboard with epoxy resin. For my resin I used the Greenlight Surf Supply marine grade epoxy resin system with fast hardener. I used Q-Cell to thicken the epoxy and fill the hole. I layered 2 patches of 6oz fiberglass and 1 patch of 4oz. I painted with acrylic paints and a black Posca paint pen. I added a final coat of epoxy resin to seal the paint. I wet sanded the repair up to 600 grit sandpaper.
Watch till the end to see my kids test ride the repaired board!

I know it seems like placing the smaller patch first , followed be the larger patches seem the way to go, but in the aviation world, they put the large patch on first, then smaller patches in the middle. Called a SCARF joint. It’s stronger after you sand it down, so you aren’t sanding through the surface fibers if you place the large patch on first.

Best repair vid I've seen for a SUP gouge - I've got a much bigger ding under my heel about the size of a golf ball or tennis ball that I dug out where foam had cracked...What is the strongest fill material since all my weight is resting here...Q-cell, microballoons, or patch in a block of foam?? Thanks!
@BendheimBoards

Thanks man! They will all be strong if done correctly. I think the difference would be weight since filling with resin and q cell will be heavier than a foam patch. I say just do whatever is easier for you.

Hey Tanner, how would you go abouts repairing/color matching a resin tinted board?
@BendheimBoards
@BendheimBoards 3 жыл бұрын
Sand it, fill the hole, sand the filling, then you can either paint it with acrylic paint and add clear fiberglass layers over it or you can skip the acrylic paint and just add color into your resin. I’m posting a ding repair in the next week for a resin tinted board. It has a resin swirl so I used acrylic paint to make it easier on myself.

You could use a posca paint pen. It could wear off over time but just repaint it on. Or you could do a clear coat of spray paint over it to help it last longer.

First off your glassing jobs are unbelievable. If you don’t mind I was wondering if you could give me a pointer on glassing a delam. I watched videos and stuff on what to do and followed what they did but at the end of it my hot coat pealed off the original part of the board. So I tried to pick it off but then it was like pulling a string on a sweater and started delaminating the rest of the patch. I used Greenlight resin/hardener and on the hot coat I added additive F. @@BendheimBoards I have Epoxy Resin and Hardener. Just to make sure I'm on the right path. When I'm laying the fiberglass down, I'd be strictly using the epoxy resin at first. I only really use the hardener as the last coat over top of that, is that right?
@BendheimBoards

@@craigvild7286 No, you need to mix the hardener into the epoxy resin for every coat and every layer otherwise it won't dry and harden. Mix a ratio of 2:1 resin to hardener

@BendheimBoards
@BendheimBoards 3 жыл бұрын
Usually that happens if there is any debris or oil from your hands on the board. Make sure to use gloves and don’t touch the laminated board with your bare hands. You can also clean it with denatured alcohol prior to the fill coat to keep it clean.

@BendheimBoards
@BendheimBoards 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks! I did my paint under the hot coat but you could also do it under the lamination. When you seal it like that, then the paint shouldn’t fade. Be sure to sand the final hot coat up to a high grit or even wet sand for that smooth finish.

Nice repair man....seems excessive but if ya really wanna go to town on a ding repait that is the way....Ive been wondering if painting on a glass layer then glassing over it is do-able....Is this still ok with acryllic paint and poly resin? Ive been told you cant do it with spraypaint....It would have been kool to know what grade sandpaper you used at each sanding stage.
@BendheimBoards
@BendheimBoards 3 жыл бұрын
Acrylic paint with epoxy resin. Any water based paints work with epoxy or poly resin - even spray paints. Just don't use oil based. I used a 40 grit disc grinder, then 80 grit all the way up to 800 wet sanding. I probably started with 120 or 150 after the fill coat layers.

Tanner, Merry Christmas to you & your family. One question: why epoxie resin instead of fiberglass? Speed?
@BendheimBoards
@BendheimBoards 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks man, Merry Christmas! I think you mean epoxy resin instead of polyester resin. For EPS foam boards, you can only use epoxy resin. Poly resin will ruin and melt EPS foam. Poly resin can only be used on polyurethane (PU) foam but epoxy resin can be used on both PU and EPS foam. Fiberglass cloth is used with both types of resin. Hope that helps.

Longboards are great to learn on. More stable and easier to paddle. Look for a used board.

Dear TB, Merry Christmas! Good job whith that repair, but😌... What are your thougts behind the ordem of apliance on the fiber paches? And meaning the size and thickness... Also I do some surfboards repairs. And with these kind of dings, I go the other way on the order, and why? Smothing it, don’t want to cut any of the pieces at the miedle for good strength and intigrity. Want them all to work has one, making it stronger. And total go with you, on using thinher fiber for wider patches, making a better blending and smother finish with the original surfboard surface. Whould say this notes come more important at a rail ding repair, where external forces are higher(mostly at a médium position on the surfboard). Possible requiering more patches, thicker and wider. Please don’t take wrong this comment of mine! Keep the good job. P.S.-Easier thing to do is to talk(bad talk) Thank you very much for the attention.😇

I’m sure there are good arguments for doing it both ways. It just makes sense to me to fill a concave area with small patches at the base since the bottom of the crevice is smallest and then layer with larger patches as the width of the crevice increases. And ending with the widest patch to flatten level with the board. 🤙

How old was your daughter when she started standing up on a board? Looking to get mine on a board soon.

She started sanding up at age 5 and she is 7 now. She just started getting excited about it this past year. We are working on her paddling so she can catch her own waves. I know other dads that pushed their kids a lot really early and it burnt them out so I’m trying to let her find her own motivation and not push too hard. Pretty fun when they get into it!

@@BendheimBoards Thanks for the reply, I'm definitely just wanting to generate some interest at the right time when she can actually do something and have fun. I've got a few years before she's ready haha. 🤙🏻 Crazy good repair too! That's what most of the video was about lol
