Most breaks can be fairly welcoming if you take the steps to slowly ingratiate yourself and show respect. It’s tough if you don’t grow up in the culture and have someone show you the ropes. It’s kind of the Wild West out there but that’s part of the appeal to a lot of people.

Neistat makes a really good point about the 0-1, or what I call the frustration to pleasure scale. I've been surfing for over 50 years, and grew up surfing a very local private spot, so the fact that I lived there I didn't get harassed (or my dad would've beaten some ass), but lately have had two hip replacements and now having to get those muscles back in order, is like beginning again, and it sucks. In the late 80’s I skated for a shop and was a snowboard instructor for years. I moved to San Diego in my late 20’s for three years and surfing was hard but I caught waves in the first week and straight rode. But surfing every day at 7/7 within a few months I was turning and catching point breaks and able to turn off the knuckle. It comes down to foot coordination and understanding a rail. And a good board helps. I still have my al Merrick black beauty. But live in Massachusetts now and haven’t surfed in almost 10 years. It’s just to aggressively shark infested and lousy storm tossed beach breaks. Even Rhodesia island point Judith is good but wicked rocky so not being on your game ends in injury or broken boards.

Mountain biking is pretty straight forward. Pedal, climb, descend. Roll over chunky rocks, find the right lines. Kind of the perk about it. 40/50/60 year olds can buy a good mountain bike and have fun on day one. It’s expensive but worth the adventures a bike can take you on (Sedona, Moab, etc..)
@rustyshackelford76513 жыл бұрын
Skateboarding is pretty hard. Like to be decent. Not just roll around on a board. I boarded a bunch when it blew up in the early 2000s and even after years and years could never master a kickflip at my best I might be able to land 1 out of 4 on flat ground. It's a lot of fun tho wish I hadn't stopped.

This also happened to me once when I was visiting NYC and, while socializing at a few bars frequented by locals, told quite a few people I was excited to move there. And instead of the open-armed welcoming and the offers to help me move in that I expected, the only thing I got was strange looks with, "Why?!" or "You REALLY shouldn't". I guess surfers will welcome newbs the days that real New Yorkers will welcome transplants.

Waves are a limited resource, so that creates some tension. But surfing makes you feel like a child again, and the better you get at it the more like an unchecked 7 year old do you act. Until you are good enough that there are cameras on you with every turn, do most surfers abandon localism-but they always benefit regardless. Not true for all surfers, Carissa just showed us this at the Olympics and you have a few that are true ambassadors of the sport like John John and his family. Slater is most likely one also, but even he gets colored as playing mind games against the other surfers-just because he is so nice (Machado Slater high five is a great example of this). $@($ em, surf anyway. When you get it, there are few things that make you feel best about yourself. Wether it makes you smile endlessly like a child or a big day when it tests you against mother nature and God. Surf anyway, its good for your soul. And consider taking jiu jitsu-just in case, helps your surfing anyway.

I say gaining respect in the Ocean by good local surfers, is like going to any local MMA/Boxing gym and gaining respect. You gotta fight to earn the local fighters trust and respect. Surfers respect other surfers who surf good, who understand the locals code and respect safe etiquette of the Ocean. But mostly comes down to your abilities. Kelly, JOB or Medina can get respect at any beach. I can get respect anywhere too, because I'm a ex-champion surfer. There's a lot to know and learn, and it may take years, you can't just rock up at a beach as a beginner and demand respect. You gotta earn that respect. That's the way surfing culture works. Nobody likes kooks who dont know what they're doing either. You earn respect by your efforts.
