Legendary Glenn Pang talks about dome decks, flat decks, and stepped decks in surfboard design. Discover how the subtle nuances of each deck style can greatly impact your surfing experience.
Dome decks, flat decks, and step decks represent distinct approaches to surfboard deck design, each offering unique characteristics that can significantly influence a surfer's performance on the waves.
A dome deck refers to a convex-shaped deck, where the centerline of the board is slightly elevated, creating a curved profile. This design element enhances responsiveness and maneuverability, allowing surfers to make quick turns and transitions with ease.
In contrast, a flat deck maintains a level surface throughout the board's width, providing stability and a larger platform for foot placement. Flat decks are popular among surfers seeking maximum control and a solid base for generating speed.
Lastly, step decks incorporate a pronounced step or drop in the deck profile. This design feature can improve water flow and reduce drag, resulting in enhanced speed and acceleration, making step decks ideal for high-performance surfing in powerful waves.

My god the editor and Glenn should be given an award for teaching us neophytes about the subtleties we think we know but actually have no idea about when shapers typically go off and explain this in-shop and we’re left fakely nodding our heads like we know wassup but secretly have zero idea what’s going on and too embarrassed to show it.

Excellent content Town and Country. You guys are one of the coolest brands I know: important part of surf history going way back, never sold out or lamed out,, highly regarded boards everywhere you go, and you keep it real. G. Pang gives great information and you've started putting out cool content. I'll keep watching and take it from the man.

Its unbelivable , Just Yesterday evening i was design a surfboard with different volume , i mean more in the middle and less on the rails but Just on the tail , the result It was exactly what Mr.Pang said.😮😮😮 Is really good way to have board for big Guys but more responsive. Great explanation. It's given me some things to think about. I went with a flat deck for the first time, thinking I would need the volume, on a Twinsman style board, with the rails turned right down. Might have been better with a step deck. It leaves me having to get right back on the tail to turn it, anywhere outside the pocket. Otherwise it bogs rail. Then I feel like I've got a ton of nose in front of me. It does some nice work if get my foot back. I've never been so perplexed by a board.

nice breakdown. A shaper once made me a big guy board with a step deck and yes, the swing weight cancelled out the responsiveness of the stepped rails. It was nice to paddle and stand on a flatter deck though.

The deck Roll can be measured by taking a straight edge approximately 7' from the stringer should be about 1/2 inch drop for a high performance roll .I measure mine and this is why Glen should reconsider liters .Other than that Glenn is the man . Love ya Glen !!!!!

That's good but the swing weight can be reduced if the board is shorter, so it's all relative to the other dimensions of the board and what you are trying to achieve I guess.
@TandCSurf
@TandCSurf Жыл бұрын
You're absolutely correct! For this example we are just referring to swing weight as it refers to deck volume though.

So do you take into consideration rail volume when determining actual total vol of the board? Leaner rails vs chunky rails effecting final end vol?
@TandCSurf
@TandCSurf 11 ай бұрын
Yes we do. Every aspect is considered when calculating the total final volume of the board 🙂

That's why you use channels and V instead of this overdone single-to-double concave bullshit. Channels and V work far better. The deck isn't that important, but the sharpness of your rails is (hard for the back third of the board, softening in the middle, then hard up the nose again). Depends on what waves you are riding the board in. Pang is an excellent shaper but he's shaping for good solid waves - not mush like in California or Sydney.

Resultant force helps turning a domed deck as opposed to a flat deck, where it is straight down instead of inward to tilt a board. Swing weight is not relevant. Plus the volume of 2,5" can't be pushed into the wave.
