I love how dumbfounded Kyle is about non swimmers going into the water. Here in the US in California and especially in Hawaii where Kyle patrols, tourists don't go in the water if they don't know how to swim.

Yeah. No one really goes in past their ankles if they can't swim around here. A lot of us use floaties or lifejackets too. Bondi is a very stark difference from our beaches lol. I don't think I've ever seen a lifeguard in action here in all my life, and many years of going to all kind of bodies of water and pools.
@baileypaliolonga5620
@baileypaliolonga5620 2 жыл бұрын
@@corbinbrier0 I have seen them in action a few times but nothing major... Mainly just pulling kids out of rips or pulling kids in who got too far out. There's a show called Lifeguard that covers Southern California beaches where you can see them in action lol. But yeah our lifeguards here in SoCal have it pretty easy usually. The water is cold and rough so it keeps the tourists and non swimmers at bay.

For anyone wondering why people who can't swim go so far in, I'm with you. If you can't swim, don't go in the water. If you want to get wet, just stay in the really shallow areas (i.e., where the water is up to your knees or something). Don't bite off more than you can chew. To be fair, though, I can do the basic swimming strokes, but I don't think I'd be able to get out of Backpackers' Rip or a strong current.
@evelynl.5628
@evelynl.5628 2 жыл бұрын
That's the thing though. Especially if ppl can't swim well, why not educate yourself or bother to read the warning signs? I got caught in a rip tide when I was nine (luckily no large waves). But my parents had taught me what to do. I just swam sideways and slowly made my way back to shore. Trying to go straight against the rip is futile. If there are rocks to your side though, then yeah, you're screwed.

I can swim, but almost drowned before so despite able to swim I never dared to swim in really deep pool afterward, more over the sea. I lived nearby a beach that directly goes to Indian ocean, very dangerous current, it claims many people every year, even the best swimmers, but people still go swimming there anyway, it's crazy

I grew up swimming in the ocean in Southern California from age 8. I can't IMAGINE going into an ocean not knowing how to swim. Do they think it's EASIER than a swimming pool?? When I started watching this series on youtube my first thought was, "Why don't they know to swim parallel to the shore to get out of the rip current?" It didn't occur to me that they can't swim at all!

Hey, I get it. There was a bear at girls camp when I was 17/18 in the Grand Tetons (Yellowstone area). We knew it was hanging around because it had broken into the trash trailer a couple days before we got up there. The second day of camp we got back from hiking and we told the Rangers had set up a trailer trap in the meadow below the line of cabins and the bear was actually down in the meadow right then. A couple of us girls wanted a look (of course) so we walked along the cabin tail until I heard it in the bushes. We stopped to look for it and ended up with about 10 girls and 3 leaders in a group staring through trees down the hill. I glanced to the right along the path and there it was 12 feet away. "THE BEAR!!!" I screamed and we all ran for the nearest cabin. I was the last one in because I shoved everyone else in. I slammed the door, then turned to look out the window. I actually said "My knees are shaking! This is awesome!" The adrenaline rush was fierce! I literally was not scared at all. The only reason I ran was because it was the smart thing to do. Our screaming scared the bear back down the hill, and after a few minutes we left the cabin and moved along the path until we could see through the trees to the meadow. We watched the bear try the trash trailer again, and fail, then move on to the trap. That year at camp was crazy. Something huge happened 4 out of the 5 days.

It's crazy how many people who can't swim try to go in the deeper parts. It's pretty rare in the US for nonswimmers to go past their waist. I've only seen lifeguards in action in swim class. My sister got pulled into a rip on a beach once, no lifeguards in sight just my stepmom fueled by adrenaline swimming out and getting her despite not being a strong swimmer herself.

The problem isn't so much going out in the deep water if you can't swim. Even if you only go up to your waist if your in the wrong place at the wrong time you can end up out there in a second. The thing that makes rips dangerous is they look nice and calm on top so you think it's fine to wade into but you don't realize how strong the undercurrent is. And if you get caught by it you can be knocked off your feet and dragged out before you can blink. And to make it worse, if you try to swim against it you just tire yourself out and it can be over in a second.

If your idea is to backstroke, badly aswel, when your in trouble in the water, maybe don't go in past your waist. I never understand how people say they don't realise how dangerous the water can be. Everyone has picked up a big bucket of water and felt how heavy it was, its not hard to work out how bad an ocean of the stuff could be, just from that.

The people who can't swim going into the water...it must just be a cultural thing? In the U.S., if you can't swim, you don't go into the water, period. That seems to be the universal understanding here. I guess it's not the same with all the people who go to Bondi 😅

I think it’s because Bondi is notorious for having big waves and Dangerous rips and most people who are rescued are tourists who don’t understand how dangerous it is. I don’t understand why exactly they go in if they can’t swim but I think they just assume it can’t be that bad and if they stay in the sandbank they won’t drift out. I don’t think it’s quite a cultural thing.
