1. So, did you find what you were after? If not, what did I miss? 2. Should this video have been shorter? Or do you appreciate the length and details shared?

Chris Eyre-Walker I’d be happier if it was longer. Your content on real world use cases with Oly cameras really sets you apart from a lot of the other m43 channels. In short, it’s great! I want more!!!😠😂😂

Superb video, I really don’t think you could have added more given your time slot. Perfection would have been addition of birds in flight picking up a fish maybe and usage in a dark church wedding shots testing face recognition~ but as I wrote I am not complaining More Please !!!!!!

But the length was great. Good comparison with similiar cams and feels like an honest opinion about every feature and the difference between them. I also really like the fact that you point out it's about the story and what you do with all electronics (instead of that they make your story)

Extremely well done evaluation! To me this is one of the best presentations on a new camera I have ever seen. Especially in combination with the break free video ahead of it. I saw the Break Free video when it came out and thought WOW and then when I saw this follow up to how, what, when and where and a simple explanation to the differences between the cameras. Great job! I was going to get the EM1 Mk3 anyway but, now I am more convinced. I have the EM5 Mk2 and the EM1 Mk2 and have been very happy with them, especially after coming from years of shooting with Canon. The Olympus line up has brought the fun and enthusiasm back into my photography. By the way as a testament to the weather sealing capabilities I took the EM1 Mk2 to Africa and Victoria Falls shortly after it came out. Our guide advised me against taking it, as we were going to walk next to the falls and he had seen many cameras ruined. I just smiled.... It was like being in a hurricane and it never flinched, not once and we were in those conditions for several hours! He was blown away as I just kept taking shots and the camera was fully functional. My wife had a rag under her rain gear and we just kept wiping the water off the lens, the 12-40 f2.8 Pro, so I could get the shot until I couldn't see out of it for all the water on it. I also shot on a rainy day all day in the Smoky Mountains in the US and never a problem. Thanks for taking the time to do this. Given the time frame you had to do it, you did an outstanding job.

Don't know what you think about the latest news from Olympus and their exit from the Camera business, but at least with the Mk III they seem to have left on a high. Their decision seems to sadly reflect consumer focus on specs over substance. Your real-world review with clever movie project included, was a joy to watch and brought home a philosophy that might be summarised as "Photography flow". I've been aware of the Olympus brand from childhood ever since my father introduced me to his ever-so-pocketable Olympus XA in the 1980s and I listened to my sister's excitement with the OM-1. These models were "classics" in their time and your review makes me think that the OM-D E-M1 Mark III is a fitting stallion from the same stable. It was a brave move to stick with µ4/3 amidst the growing competition from full frame sensors chasing pixel power and public contentment with the social media friendly quality from do-it-all phones. The Olympus seemed sandwiched between extremes. Sadly, purchasing power seems to have prevailed and one suspects that many might be missing the point made by your video; that the Olympus system works brilliantly with all the right compromises. For example, so what if the viewfinder doesn't quite have the highest resolution, it is certainly fit for purpose and allows efficient use of the processor for making the most of additional features. Photos are about capturing fleeting moments, the narrative is the most important aspect and a higher resolution viewfinder might sound like a persuasive selling point but it really adds nothing to the shot. Cameras are so much more than megapixels. Sticking with the same sensor for long enough to evolve associated aspects of the processor and surrounding body makes sense to me. People should try using their cameras with gloves on! For a special high resolution shot, do we really need more than 50 or 80 MP that the clever Olympus mechanics can provide anyway? Not that I want to gripe, your video deserves positive comments. It is just frustrating that Olympus fell victim to an internal corruption scandal that has forced it into the situation of a needing to have short-term profit drive decisions. As your videos show, Olympus provides a splendid range of excellent lenses for impressive kit that punches well above its weight. The µ4/3 format provides an optical geometry allowing for excellent compact high quality lenses and world-leading image stabilisation. Congratulations on your very enjoyable review. It helped me consolidate thoughts that the Mk III is something that would be worth owning one day to upgrade an EPL-6, that has nonetheless provided excellent shots in "trees become tripods" journeys...portability is key. Thank you for sharing, keep up the great work.

Just found this and subscribed! A proper in depth real world look. I'm an E-M1mk II user myself, eagerly awaiting the rumours that have been hitting about the next model. I actually needed this video - although I get awesome results from my set up and love it, I've seen even more bashing than usual recently and it has started to make me think about things; I'm not usually influenced like this but right now in 2021 it seems everyone is moving over to Sony and bashing Olympus. This video just reminded me of what I already know, so thank you!

Thanks, this was a fantastic review. The one I've watched after seeing all the others. I find it interesting that most of the people using Olympus gear are actual professional photographers with youtube channels on the side or to promote their business and those that downplay the system are full-time KZbinrs. I'll keep using my Em1 mkii for now, it does everything I need it to do, but some of the new features on the mkiii are really nice. For me it just shows how good of a camera the Em1 mkii is.

Chris - a masterful job presenting the capabilities of the Mark iii in the context of making the delightful “Breaking Free” video. I also very much appreciated your segment on the camera’s new video capabilities. The 120 FPS in full HD will certainly work for me in story telling in my wildlife videos although I would have very much have used an addition of 4K at 60 FPS. One video capability that I didn’t see you mention was the really excellent focus stability that the Olympus phase - detect system provides plus how you can adjust the sensitivity of and refocusing.

This was an EXCELLENT review. Really indepth. Not all of it applies to me, but the detailed description of what you did to push the camera to its limits was most appreciated. I find it interesting that when I first got into photography, I was more interested in what "objective" reviewers had to say, as opposed to Olympus Visionaries, or Fuji Ambassadors, or other brand dedicated photographers. Now I find that those general reviews are relatively superficial, and the vast majority of them cover more or less the same issues that anyone with a bit of knowledge could have guessed at. News flash: full frame isn't everything! Instead, I want to know how the camera performs from those who know the gear, menus, capabilities the *best*, especially in terms of how the whole ecosystem works. Sure, there might be a bias, but so what? Nothing in life is unbiased (I do research at a university, so don't kid yourself on so called objectivity), so I rather hear that declaration, and then have the reviewer really dig into how to extract the most from a camera/lens/system. The reality is it's difficult to take a poor picture with any modern camera: those who whine incessantly about some missing/altered feature probably need to rethink their photographic skills and approach. Great review.

Great making of / review 👍 ... didn’t feel like 50 mins 🏃‍♂️... your review confirmed that pre-ordining the E-M1 iii as an upgrade to my beloved E-M5 ii was the right choice 😁 ... since you offered to answer technical questions 😜: ls there Auto ISO (with or without exposure compensation) in movie mode? Obviously you have proven that one (or at least you) can produce great videos in uncontrollable conditions independent of your answer. I always enjoy your content. Thx, Frank

Excellent review, Chris! Reading the rumors of the MkIII (which were technically pretty accurate), it didn’t sound very appealing for me (shooting the MkII) because of the lack of a newer generation sensor (for higher dynamic range and a little better noise performance), EVF and LCD. With that said, I absolutely love actually shooting with the MkII and wouldn’t want to switch to any other camera brand from that perspective. But now that it’s out, the new features like HHHR mode and Live ND actually look really appealing as I have changed my shooting style quite a bit in the last year. It all started with the purchase of the 12-100/4 Pro which led to me going lighter, often leaving the 40-150/2.8 and my tripod at home). I shoot a lot of long exposures and for the “shorter” ones, I don’t need that tripod anymore and with 10yrs of practice, I don’t think that my composing skills need it that much either anymore. With much less time for photography than I’d like, this newfound (both physical and mental) agility and speed makes me more productive, landing me more keepers with less time, meaning that bringing the camera for shorter sessions is much more meaningful and much less frustrating. But, this also means that I don’t use the original (tripod) HR mode very often anymore, which I really miss for its amazing qualities, so that HHHR mode is starting to look mighty enticing! And if the Live ND works well enough, it will occasionally save me from fiddling with filters and holders. Now if only Olympus would combine the two…!

I left this comment on your 1X video and it applies here as well because I'm looking into this system: "Until this system can cleanly shoot at ISO 8000, it is a non-start for me. The lighting in most ice hockey rinks is so poor that high-ISO is the only option to properly expose the image. Shutter speed: 1/1250, Aperture: f/2.8. Majority of my images are taken between ISO 4000 - 6400. When the camera system can perform this, it will be on my list for consideration as the size, weight, and build quality do have me interested."

Thanks Chris - great project to do in such a short amount of time. Incredible that you could achieve it with such a short gear list. Full credit to your skill and vision, plus to Olympus for their gear. I really appreciated the detail provided and did not mind the length at all. I have the E-M1.2 so have not tried Olympus’ application of joysticks for AF point control. Other brands that I have tried seem sluggish in their responsiveness. How do you find the Olympus joystick effectiveness? Do you find a difference between E-M1X and 1.3, other than the tactile differences you mentioned? Cheers, Craig
@chriseyrewalker
@chriseyrewalker 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks Craig! As to the joystick. I think it's definitly easier and faster to use than the dial pad / arrows. Each camera feels a little different, so you have to get used to the responsiveness and speed of it. But I do find it to be very responsive and easy to use and use it all the time to move my focus point. In fact, I now tend to move my AF point much more often compared to before where I would focus and reframe.

As a lifelong Canon shooter from film days through DSLR's, I was strangely not excited with all of the Canon R5 news. I am looking for something different. Even with Canon going mirrorless, the lenses I have and the RF lenses are just huge and I am not getting any younger. I find, that unless I am going specifically to shoot something, I leave my kit at home because of the weight. I have never researched micro 4/3 before and I am just starting on that process now. I have come across some random videos on youtube about Olympus. I am a little worried with the current world event's if this system will be around for awhile longer. No one has a crystal ball and I am willing to take that risk. My question to you would be: I shoot a wide variety of subjects, but what I enjoy the most is shooting rehearsals for a couple of local amateur theater groups. I switch between the 7D Mark II and the 5DSR depending on how much movement for a particular shot. The lenses I use most are the 85m 1.2 mark II and the 135 2.0. My eye is more for telephoto and dreamy look. If I bought the EM III, I would think I would want the 45mm Olympus lens. Again I am just starting the research journey so I apologize if this may seem like a silly question, how does the 45mm look compared to the older Canon 1.2 mark II (I don't like perfect pictures, I like a little not perfect if that makes sense)....Thank you for your time.

You said that the HHRR ISO is better than the EM1x, this is interesting, is this because there is no limit to the ISO, or are there actual improvements to ISO performance between the 1x and 1iii? You also said that the Starry Sky works 'because of' the TruePic9 I hope it will be introduced into the 1x .... in fact I hope they can upgrade the 1x firmware to incorporate both features.

Hey Alex! Congrats on getting your Mk III, you’ll love it for sure. To be honest, I’m not the best guy to talk to when it gets to setting up every little feature of the camera. I mainly (like 99% of the time) use it in Manual mode with S-AF focus mode. So I’m constantly balancing shutter, aperture and ISO and that’s about it… 😅

Excellent video. I am torn between EM-1 Mark ii and EM-5 Mark iii. I have been using EM-10 Mark ii for 3+ years and I am loving it, but it struggles with autofocus in low light and it doesn't have a fully articulating screen for shooting my videos, which I shoot on a tripod. Also my EM-10 Mark ii almost can't do face detection in video and keeps hunting even with my face moving very little in the frame. EM-1 Mark III is out of question because of the price. So... please help me decide. Thank you very much for your time and effort.

Yes, I did find what I was after..... with one caveat: I'd have liked to see the iso, f-stop, and shutter speed associated with the images. Maybe you could provide a blog with each image and its associated meta-data?. (I believe, the mkii does have the ability to adjust the auto focus response time for "things that pass between camera and object"...)…. Lastly, (and another topic), when will you visionaries be able to talk about the new 150-400mm lens?.... I want to know whether or not that lens will beat the Lumix 100-400mm lens I'm currently using for "birds in flight" pics. Thanks

Personally I would love a small Pen-F sized camera or even smaller like a Pana GM1 sized camera with a lot of the bells and whistles of the EM1 mark III - weather sealing and all. Overall system size is the main reason I’m staying with m43s. I would certainly pay premium for that ad I prefer using smaller cameras for hikes and travel.

Another excellent review, very well put together and I think you covered all the points that make it a worthy upgrade from the Mk2 and a worthy addition to the the M1X as a second body. I have a question though. At minute 40:40 you’re comparing the Mk2 & mk3 particularly in the video functionality, and you say that its able to output 4.2.2 at 10bit to an external recorder. Is that correct? I’ve looked through the specs on the Olympus website and it only mentions recording at 8 bit, internally. I ask as, if it does 10 bit then that’s a game changer for me. Another review also mentions external recording but also in Prores. If you can shed more light on it then that would be appreciated. 👍🏻

Thanks for the review! Can't wait to get mine, to replace my EM1 mark I :) I wanted to get a mark II a few months ago, but decided to wait as soon as the first mark III rumors appeared. The AF ergonomics and the joystick interest me a lot! But it's the fourth review I read/watch where the youtuber insists on the "real world review" vs the "usual specs review". It's a bit obvious that Olympus gave marketing instructions to its influencers... To compensate the future classic reviews which will point the oldness of the EVF or the 20MP sensor and give their final rating on these components, I suppose. And I agree they are enough in most situations, and to publish photos on the net, but why selling a camera with so old components that price??? While the Panasonic G9 already has a much better EVF for 2 years, and is 700€ less. It looks a bit stingy for a "professional camera" . Anyway, I still like these reviews (Petr Bambousek's one is very good too, more animals-photography oriented). They show that you don't need a FF camera to make good photos, and you can have a much lighter bag!
@chriseyrewalker
@chriseyrewalker 4 жыл бұрын
I can assure you 100% that Olympus did not give any marketing instructions to me for this review. Same goes for the project. It's all my concept and words. Of course, Olympus supported the Break Free film and in return made this review possible by letting me take the camera and use for 12 days straight in all kinds of scenarios. But that kind of was the point: come up with a cool concept/project that also allowed me to create an honest review based on real experiences. I think people are getting tired of reviewing gear by the stats and numbers... just compare them for yourself and done. But actually showing how a product is used by pros like Petr Bambousek and how we benefit from the advantages of a system to get our job done, is worth so much more than complaining about the EVF or sensor. Because, to us, those things don't matter. It's what we capture and why we capture it that matters.

As a video camera E-M1 II nad III has one huge downside that keeps me back. Limited recording time. Considering my needs it is basically a dealbreaker. And it is not justified by anything. Tax, heat or canibalization of other Olympus camera lines. And it could be easily lifted with a firmware update. Yet it hasn't been so far, which kinda sucks.

Chris, what an excellent review. I have enjoyed every minute of this video. As a professional landscape photographer and Aurora chaser (as I live in Norway) I can't wait to add the EM1 Mark III to my Olympus kit. I am an Olympus shooter - and great advocate of the system (converted many photographers to the system) - for many many years and I love the innovation Olympus puts in his cameras. I am very pleased to hear that Olympus removed the ISO limitation on the HiRes shots, as this will help me to to shoot even more Aurora images with decreasing noise. Over the last years I have tested the HiRes mode on the EM1 Mark II to shoot the Aurora, but the limitation of the ISO (1600) caused an issue. Now I crank up the ISO with decreased shutter speed to capture the Aurora. My tests with the EM1 Mark II have shown that the thought process I had was correct. So now I am happy the I can do more tests with the EM1 Mark III. The new EM1 Mark III will help to open a whole new set of opportunities to shoot the Aurora. I recently wrote an article about "how to shoot the Northern Lights with your EM1 Mark II" - which was published by Olympus Passion magazine. With the knowledge I have put in this article I am sure the Olympus EM1 Mark III will greatly improve the Northern Lights shooting experience. Especially with the new Starry Sky AF functionality allowing long exposure shots handheld, will be a quantum leap in shooting the Northern Lights. I am more than sold on the Olympus gear and bring the Break Free messaging forward. I love the system!
