Possibly one of the best EDC lenses. I lost count of how many sunsets or landscape/urban sights I come across but all I have is a phone. Absolutely frustrating. Definitely keen on getting the 8-25 + maybe an EM1-2 as an EDC. These are the kind of innovations that I hope Olympus will keep creating. Things that are physically impossible on larger formats, truly unique to M43. The collapsing lens feature though is seen on other brands too. Nikon had it since long ago, although it is with kit lenses.

Hi Chris, I always enjoy your 'real life' reviews. Folks can always read specifications but it is quite another thing to get some in-the-field feedback. I prefer reading reviews from you and other pros that I respect. As far as the 8-25 mm f/4 lens goes it will be interesting for many photographers because of its small size, lightweight, IPX1 weather sealing, focus clutch, and flexible focal length range. Some folks may hesitate with the price... but I've found M.Zuiko lenses are worth every penny. My main client work is safety videos, the bulk of which are shot indoors under low light conditions so the f/4 constant aperture is not very practical for what I do. I've found the trio of PRO f/2.8 zooms from M.Zuiko are superb and video can easily be shot handheld with all of them. I shoot with a pair of E-M1X bodies as I also have large hands. Since my kit already includes the PRO 7-14 f/2.8 and PRO 12-100 f/4, the new 8-25 f/4 isn't a good fit for me as there is an inefficient focal length overlap. As it is now, my 12-100 f/4 is not used all that much. My main reason to buy it was to match it up with the 100-400 f/5-6.3 IS (and possibly PRO 7-14 f/2.8) to create a 3 lens travel/nature kit. My least used M.Zuiko lens is the PRO 45 mm f/1.2... a fantastic performer when I need it in specific situations. I've used a range of camera formats in the past including full frame, APS-C and Nikon 1. Without question my Olympus kit is the best and most capable camera gear I've ever owned. Keep up the great work... your efforts are appreciated! Tom

Thanks for the review. I guess I'm a little unsure about this lens. I was expecting something smaller and lighter more like the Olympus 9-18 f4-5.6 but with pro-build quality. I'm a little taken back that is it so similar in size and weight to the 7-14 f2.8 and heavier than the Panasonic 8-18 f2.8-4.0. I guess the extra zoom travel isn't for free. I was sure I was going to get this lens when it was announced, but now I'll have to give it some more thought. Still this and a 50-150 2.8 and I would be good to go for most things. That is very tempting.

Excellent Chris. On the "pack smaller size" feature - The Nikon 24-70mm Z lens has the same where you need to extend the lens first before shooting. I am a heavy user of the 7-24mm PRO lens which has some significant flaring issues. I really hope the 8-25mm PRO lens is less exposed to flare. Well... having said that - 8-25mm + 12-100mm PRO lenses...convers it basically all! I love Olympus. Cheers Hendrik Zwart

The similar collapsible design is used on M.Zuiko 9-18 but you have to push button AND zoom to unlock = quite annoying sometimes. The Zuiko 9-18 is quite good lens, very good optics, little slow, super light (150 g) and very small (5 cm collapsed). But definitely 8-25/4 is a great workhorse for "one lens for all" and the huge advantage is the weather sealing and metal body.

With the 9-18 you only have to push (slide) the button to retract the lens. You can extend it with just a turn of the zoom ring.

That five-year-old article on filters is what introduced me to your work back when I bought my 7-14mm! Is the E-M1X your main camera? If so, is there a reason you use it more than the E-M1 Mark III?
@chriseyrewalker3 жыл бұрын
Haha yes... still a popular article. But I’m glad I can leave the big filters at home and work with the new lens instead. Less is more 😉 As for the cameras. I like the EM1X because of the extra battery life, built in GPS and extra sealing. Don’t get me wrong, the Mark III is amazing and I own both. But the ergonomics that the slight larger grip of the X offer fit my hands a little better. And the fact that I don’t have to change batteries so often in extreme conditions is a big plus for me.

The compactness you like so much isn't new. Olympus was already doing it with their 9-18 and quite a few other lenses do it too. I own the 9-18 and have had no problem whatsoever with that feature, so I'm sure the 8-25, a higher end lens, will work wonders. Overall, it does seem to be a wonderful addition to m43. I would mind the f4 when I'm shooting the northern lights but that's something I do only once every now and then, so... And 16-50mm-e is a great range... Thanks for the review!

@pavelperina76293 жыл бұрын
Great review. I'm just not sure if it can replace something like 17mm/f1.2 or whatever you mentioned. For me primes and zooms are very different. I don't know how to explain it. For hiking, 12-60/f3.5-5.6 Panasonic kit lens is usually all I need and I use it from f5.6 to f8 to have everything sharp. For walks around the city I used 20mm/f1.7 (which I replaced by Fuji X100V) and I use it in completely different way by taking photos of random details with depth of field, thinking more about a shot, where to stand and also low aperture allows to take photo of people in low light. But I believe this lens is awesome for landscape if you prefer wide angle and if you can sacrifice range above 50mm. I like that Olympus makes f4 lenses, I don't understand the reason why Panasonic made their PL f2.8-4 line which basically competes with APSC cameras in terms of depth of field, size, weight and price. f2.8 and f3.5 is not that much different and for indoor photos of people it's better to use prime lenses. Basically since I upgraded from G5 to G80 with IBIS, my once most used 12-35/f2.8 is collecting dust and only use is night time city.
@PGXX85 ай бұрын
Chris, don't know whether you still read and answer comments on this 3 years old video. Well I try. Watched it after seeing your prior comparison video about the three 12-xxx Pro zooms where you mentioned that you are a 12-100 guy and have that lens attached permanently on one of your bodies and other lenses are dedicated for special occassions. Has this changed since you’ve added the 8-25 to your lineup? I too make 80% of my photos with the 12-100 that is glued to my OM-1. Other lenses like 42/1.8 60/2.8 macro, 75-300 etc. are on the camera just a short time for special needs and then the 12-100 is mounted again as my default configuration. I find it difficult to have two always-on lenses and decide which one I should put in my bag. And carrying both adds quite some weight especially for hiking compared to a 12-100 + ultralight Laowa 7.5 f2 that doubles for astro photography and northern lights. The downside of having only a prime as my ultrawide lens is that I have to change lenses more often and thus think twice whether the composition I have in mind really needs the switch to 7.5 mm or whether using the 12-100 with a tighter crop to 12 mm would be just good enough. 😏 I believe you carry more gear on a hike than I’m willing to carry so you probably bring with you both lenses on two bodies. Still which camera/lens is the one you normally carry outside your bag?
@chriseyrewalker5 ай бұрын
Hey, I think the quick answer, is to stick with your 7.5. Especially if you’re using this for Astro / northern lights, as the 8-25mm is only an F4. Nowadays I use the 8-25 and 12-100mm almost equally. Again, depending on the project / subject. Hope this helps.

@chriseyrewalker2 жыл бұрын
Hey John. I’d say it’s worth it. Especially for the difference at the wide end. Between 14mm and 8mm is a huge difference in field of view. And the 8-25mm is a good all rounder outdoor / landscape lens that can be on the camera for a LOT of what you shoot in those environments. So you won’t be swapping to the 14-150mm that often. So: yes. Worth it if you asked me.

They have too many external moving parts for my liking. I've got two Olympus lenses (14-42mm, 40-150mm) which extend like that, and neither are usable at their full range - the camera freezes, the lenses need to be removed, and the camera restarted. Neither of them are pro lenses, so hopefully that would make a difference here, but I don't trust it. C) f4. 😭 I'd like to see a refresh of the 75mm f1.8 - faster focus, fn button, manual/auto focus ring, weather sealing.

I hope that this lens won't approach the price of the Leica 10-25mm f/1.7 lens

good review but a small Lens with just F 4.0, i stay with my 12-100mm F 4.0 if it would be a F 2.8 i would consider buy it, but as 4.0 i am not.

Sounds like the 7-14 is the one for you then...

I wish this was a 1.8 o at least a 2.8 . 4.0 is not for me

I’d look at the prime lenses for larger aperture you’re after. I LOVE my 17 and 25mm f/1.2 PRO lenses. Different purposes though. For sure.

I’m very disappointed in the price. OMD making the same mistakes of selling M43 lenses at full frame prices. The Nikon Z 14-30mm f4 covers similar focal range at about the same price. Pair it with a Z5 or Z6 and you have a full frame setup that’s possibly smaller, cheaper and lighter while providing full frame IQ.

Poor 7-14 lens

Definitely not that. More versatile and lighter though.

A "PRO" lens with F4? With NO 0 coating, with NO stabilisation, for 1000 euro EXCL 89 euro for a sunhood? I dont think so!! If this is the strategy from the new owners my Olympus days are over. BTW The news of this new lens i got from Olympus. In the header " you want to see the new camera and the new lens? click here" But whatever you do, no new camera to be found.

If you're going to post to every review of this lens at least be creative rather than just cut and paste.
