UPS's can have surge protection built in too right?
@tarfeef_42689 жыл бұрын
+GRIZZLY_GUY Yes, and most high-quality units will. Personally, I use APC and have never had an issue. Granted I do so for the servers I maintain, so I also did pay for business-grade products, but I'd assume that their quality carries over to consumer-grade gear.
@jorno19949 жыл бұрын
+GRIZZLY_GUY Yes, but it's not really their main focus, as the really good ones can be more expensive than your computer.
@dougle039 жыл бұрын
+GRIZZLY_GUY Two types of UPS exist generally, On-line and Off-line (Nothing to do with the internet). On-line types power the things you plug into them via the batteries and inverter permanently, regardless of incoming supply. Off-line types power your devices direct from the mains, then they switch over (static switching) to internal batteries (via an inverter) when the mains goes off. The on-line UPS's are better and provide full surge protection all the time because your devices are not directly connected to the incoming mains supply, but are more expensive as their transformers have to be bigger and able to supply the full load needed; plus charge batteries at the same time. Off-line types are cheaper as their transformers only have to charge the batteries; most Off-line UPS's have simple surge protection, but it's usually basic as appropriate with the lower cost of the off-line type units. Note that APC ups's for the domestic market are not necessarily the same reliable grade as their industrial models. Key components such as the transformer, inverter and batteries cost money, the more they cost, the better the quality generally; especially the transformer....

I love your videos, the quick format is great! I have three questions 1. What if you chain several surge protectors together? what happens if they are not identical in terms of clamping voltage or joule rating? 2. If you have a power conditioner, and a surge protector, and a UPS is there a sequence which they would most optimally be chained? 3. Will using a surge-protector, with a power conditioner on the same breaker allow a surge that is safely shunted to ground, to re-enter the electrical wiring through the power conditioners softer interface with the shared ground? is that a thing? like aaaa ground loop of death!...?. 4. BONUS QUESTION! what about a really, really,... ReALLy.... BiG magnet!

Okay, so the answer to this is actually a gray area. In physics, electrons travel from negative to positive. This is the actual way electricity flows. But, electrical engineers write wiring diagrams and understand semiconductors under the assumption that electricity goes from positive to negative. Either way is fine and it really just depends on the environment.

I think using surge protectors in my house might be a moot point then. All my outlets only have two prongs. They don't have the 3rd. We did change out a 220 outlet for a 110. So far nothing has fried. Though my speaker do make a weird popping noise when the fridge kicks on or off. So far between power strips, surge protectors, and UPSs I like UPSs the best. The battery only lasts a few years. Yet they keep the random power outages from corrupting installs and upgrades on the PCs. To bad I am slowly building a stack of dead batteries in the garage though. I don't know of any place that will properly dispose of them here.

Linus didn't cover the surge protector on/off switch. These are set to TURN OFF if a certain amount of voltage is reached and this stops an electric flow. At least that is how the surge protectors in m country work. The 3 prong explaination is not an option in most places in m country. if there is a 3rd prong, i useually use a 3 to 2 prong adapter because no outlets have 3 prongs. So I guess my point is surge protectors work for surges by TURNING OFF the power and stopping current from anything plugged into it from deliverying current until the button is reset. Anyway I dont understand why Linus didn't mention this.

I had no idea that a surge protected power strip would still work after a power surge. The joule rating is cumulative. It can be used up over 10 years in 100 small surges, or all at once. But if you CANT SEE the indicator light, or your surge protector doesnt have an aubile alarm, youd never know it wasnt working anymore. I just lost my washer and dryer from damage to my power line from a storm and a surge protector that was likely no longer working. Hower my 86" tv and home theater was likely saved from a new surger protector with a high joule rating i bought last year. That thing popped so loud i heard it happen and could see the glow from the indicator light went off under my media console. I immediately unplugged all that.

TECHQUICKIE< the joules rating doesn't tell you what is the "response time" how long is the surge protectors response time because if the power surge is 2 seconds or more it will damage everything that is plugged into the surge protector? This video unfortunately only refers to the lower-end surge protectors that are based on MOVs (Metal Oxide Varistors). The far better but more expensive ones are called Series Mode surge protectors and are based on inductance using large capacitors. Those offer substantially more protection and can take absolutely massive surges thousands of times without being harmed or destroyed in the process.
Can you make a video testing major brand surge protectors please?

Whole house surge protectors/suppressors work best (one can add point of use surge protectors as a second line of defense if desired). Whole house units don't cost that much and do a much better job than fancily-packaged point of use units.
@michaelbeckerman7532 Жыл бұрын
Not actually true. A whole-house surge protector normally has a much higher clamping/let-through voltage point than an individual device surge protector does. Because of this, you always want to take a layered approach to surge protection. Never rely on just a whole-house surge protector by itself. It's a good idea to have one at your service panel, for sure, but you should also have individual device surge protection on each of your high-value electronics as well. Keep in mind here that surges can actually come from inside the house (washers and dryers, furnaces, AC systems, garbage disposals, lighting systems, etc.) as well as from outside. Studies have shown that roughly 80% of all surges experienced at a site originate from on-premise equipment. This is why individual surge protectors are still very important, even when a whole-house surge protection device is in place.

@tonyhong209 жыл бұрын
This might sound like a stupid question but if I were to daisy chain a couple surge protectors together while only using the end strip to actually power my devices, will this devices have more protection against surges?
@Decent609 жыл бұрын
+Tony Hong Not really. Reason is, the first one in the line is now drawing power for whatever is plugged in to it and passing it along. So if you had other items plugged into the first one, it could accidentally cause a power surge to other devices plugged into them and fry them. Not enough to trip the breaker but enough to harm them over a long period of time. A conditioner may prevent too much flowing to other ones plugged in. Remember a surge protector is just a power strip with an added bonus. It still has to feed the power to the other devices, which is why it's not a good idea to plug in power-hungry devices into them (like a fridge/mini-fridge) since it needs to send enough power to what ever is asking for it. Which, in-turn, can send too much power to another device and shorten it's life-span. If you are that paranoid, it would be best to use a UPS and then daisy chain off of that. Any good UPS will have a voltage regulator to prevent an over-draw and basically be like plugging into a regular outlet. Tho, if the power goes out completely, the batter will be drained much quicker.

When lightning strikes.. Doesn't it cause the earth pin to malfunction? Due to high amount of charge present in the ground?
@blasurielcastromiranda18009 жыл бұрын
+Ankit Sharma That depends where the lightning charge went, which it´s generally on the ground line, if your ground connection isn’t proper calculated and implemented for lightning dissipation your entire ground grid will malfunction, and an inductive charge will remain on the grid creating voltage swells, that´s why having a well-designed ground grid it´s important, if you have it you don´t have to worry when a lightning strikes on your ground line. A good sure protection should protect your equipment from voltage sags and swells
@ankit22sharma9 жыл бұрын
blas uriel castro miranda thanks bud
@Decent609 жыл бұрын
+Ankit Sharma Doesn't malfunction, just that it's can't handle the excess strain so it diverts all that it can and your electronics (typically) absorb the rest. In the case of a surge protector, it can still jump a connection (for low rating ones) and still fry your equipment. Higher rating ones still do a better job of it but If the wiring in your house is good enough, your breaker or fuse box (in places that aren't up to date with their protection) will take the blunt of it and then ground out into the dirt with a bigger wire. It really depends on how and where the lightning hits too. Typically your breaker or fuse box should stop it before setting off your surge protector. In the case of a fuse box, it could catch on fire tho. The only way it would malfunction, is if it was made out of cheap material. In which case, that's what you would get for buying cheap and have almost no ratings for the protection. This is also why you would want to get ones that have the UL stamp on it so that you know it was tested for what it's rated for.

+ass848484 It would do a much, much better job than a typical one. Surge in that case would happen on that same circuit, but if you have a problem home protection system (including regulators so make sure the power drawn doesn't spike too high) then it should be a rare occurrence. Let's also not to forget that those kinds of setups have a breaker built into the power outlet, so theoretically it wouldn't need a surge protector. However, it's better to have a redundancy than to have ruined equipment.

As a result of my town not having a particularly good electrical system, when the power went out across town one day, I was left with a fried motherboard. Lesson learned.

good video .. i did learn a little about surge protectors that I didn't know but .... your little graphic with the negative and positive and the (what looks like a representation of) electrons is backwards. Electrons which are the partials that "carry" electricity are negatively charged. A negative terminal has more electrons and the positive terminal has fewer therefor electricity moves from negative to positive because it always tries to "even out". Going from positive to negative is a common misconception ... maybe because everyone sees circuits terminating at ground which is negative they assume that ground is where the electricity "stops" .. lol other than that .. I did like the video ... just thought I would point that out :)

So guys...here in Ireland, ALL of our plugs have three prongs. Does that mean all of our electronics are surge protected by default?
