8:00 What makes more sense to me, is the capability to detect certain compounds which only happen during X type situations. i.e. he could "know" fear or competence or other hormonal type "feelings" and discern from that a confidence level for the enemy. "The enemy is panicking, therefore we are winning with our current strategy. OR the enemy is confident, and we must change tactics." kinda thing.
@Yumao420
@Yumao420 Жыл бұрын
In 40k logic: the space marines have some warp shenanigans going on. I think that they can get vivid memories from connecting to their victims soul through ritual cannibalism. On real life logic: extra organs for detecting only hormones wouldn't be all that useful for combat because dead soldiers are gonna be blown to smithereens or high on adrenaline basically 99% of the time (since they were killed) and detecting long term effects of hormones (actually useful information because it allows to infer into the general living situation of the enemy) in the body by eating is something that we can already do by default, so no need for an extra organ when the only impediment today is ethics not present in 40k. What I suggest is an organ made to react to an array of specific RNA responsible for a number of bodily functions. You could tell only by that if they've been affected by or are vulnerable to X poison or Y disease, if they've been eating right, if they had a period of starvation on live, if they were exposed to radiation, if they've reproduced, how old they were, if they could get any stronger and literally anything else. It would essentially be having a general timetable about every enemy soldier but from a genetic perspective

As a TTRPG designer I'm loving this series/concept of videos where you dissect fandom franchises with medical knowledge and theoretical solutions (WH40K master chief, etc). Besides providing information that is useful as a game designer, it also makes the learning process super fun concerning medical knowledge I otherwise never would sift through dry text books for. I'd assume that applies to non designers as well, so super awesome concept for educating the masses by meeting them where they are at. Please do continue this sort of thing.

I love how the good doctor here while having fun with the topic, treats it quite seriously and gives a good deal of technical detail (or at least, a good deal for someone like me who never even thought of studying human physiology). Especially within the topic of space marine augmentation, a topic that many 40k fanboys will discuss to death within the lore of the setting but few seem willing to do more than a cursory comparison to real world medical tech. Getting a proper comparison from someone willing and able to do it, along with bringing the knowledge base of a surgeon to the discussion is much appreciated.

Another great addition to this series! I especially enjoyed learning about the potential mechanisms of memory transfer/storage during examination of the Omophagea. We know so little about even defining, much less comprehensively understanding, concepts like consciousness and memory. You'd think we'd have a better handle on them given how foundational they are to the human experience, but our own minds continue to be wonderland of new discoveries. With regards to genetic memory, you may find Lex Fridman's podcast with Michael Levin interesting. Dr. Levin talks about general tissue-level memory with a focus on planarians - flatworms that are essentially immortal in that they don't age, appear to be immune to cancer, and seemingly ignore enormous buildup of genetic errors because of that tissue-level memory giving a top-down blueprint. They reproduce by essentially tearing themselves in two, with each of the progeny having the memories of the original. If you cut up a planarian, each piece will somehow remember where it should be and what should surround it and will regenerate a new body accordingly (the record is a planarian recovering from being cut into 279 pieces, with each piece becoming a whole, healthy worm). This is spite of the fact that they are more "developed" than some other worms with multiple distinct structures etc. Perhaps their example reinforces the idea of certain types of memory being independent of specific links between neurons.

The genetic memory concept was involved in the Assassin's Creed games. The 3rd or 4th game. I think they introduced the idea of exploring whole lifetimes via virtual reality ran by a super computer that could extract the details of said lives from DNA samples. Farfetched but it was pretty neat to think about.

The idea has been floating around in sci-fi since at least the 1960s. After the worm experiments mentioned in the video. It was a big part of the Dune novels.

26:26 they’ll be evacuated, if their injuries are treatable they’ll do it and give them an adrenaline shot, or he will simply wake up when his body detects that it’s no longer at risk; thus it doesn’t need to be in suspended animation anymore (that’s why the organ is so important) other ones who have injuries who are impossible to treat aren’t “revived” at least not in the sense that a doctor would expect, he will have his legs and arms amputated and his torso and head are put into whats essentially a metal coffin that controls a huge killing machine called a dreadnought. Most of them go insane when that happens, but the few that keep their sanity will spend thousands of years forever trapped into a dark metal box alone without any feeling (physical) whatsoever, you should do a follow up to this series about dreadnoughts

A note with the Sus-An membrane. its actually very difficult to revive a marine who's gone into it. So its not done lightly, and the marine's often stay in it for months before they can be pulled back out of it. There was 1 novel where one of the characters had been in it, and there's mentions of propethic dreams during it, so I imagine its partially psychic in nature

This mini series, as far as I've watched thus far, is more enlightening about how modern medicine works as well as the human body. Although the viability of future medical procedures is also very insightful too.
