Dear uploader, I am glad to see this beautiful video elaborately demonstrating this Aberdeen knot. I am a surgeon practicing since more than 15 years. In the initial years of my career I used this knot quite often. It definitely looks cool while doing it, also I saw many senior surgeons ending abdominal closures with this knot. But, performing so many surgeries I really wonder, that the same precise abdominal closure or even better can be done with instrument tied knot.If instruments are available, might as well use them

Recent studies know that the aberdeen knot has better knot security and knot holding capacity than a surgical knot. You can still do an aberdeen knot with instruments. :)

In thinking about your comment, I am recalling the techniques of my own preceptor (endowed chair and professor of surgery, surgical anatomy and surgical pathology...one of the great surgeons in the country and an absolute perfectionist) some 45 years ago. He rarely used a chain knot (Aberdeen) and I followed suit finding it easier to be more certain of the precise tension on the wound with other techniques. But...whatever works (well).

Why is this preferred to staples?

Staples can only be used on the skin, where you can remove them. When suturing deeper layers like muscles with resorbable sutures, the aberdeen knot can be applied. AND our audience primarily train perineal repair after vaginal birth, and having staples in your perineum would likely be unpleasant to sit on :)

I believe the term is, it becomes longer, not stronger, when adding more than 3 throws :)
