Great lookin bike, that bear spray is just going to piss the bear off . The National Parks now allow conceal carry. I'd be a nervous wreck camping at Yellowstone in my tent at night after cooking up some food. Yellowstone and the Grand Tetons are so beautiful. Good luck, be safe and have fun.

Hi, Vicky. I like the set up on your Surly Disc Trucker. I have an older 2007 Surly Long Haul Trucker /w/ 26" wheels in 2007, set up for touring. I hope your enjoy your Surly, Shirley, as I do mine, they are world class touring bikes, and well priced. Also, I have subscribed. Thanks.

Thanks Dimitrios! I really do enjoy "Shirley". She's much different from my racing bike but has truly served me well! Thanks for subscribing!

Happy New Year, Vicky, Jim, and Lunatic! First time visitor here. Really good point with the tether! I didn't think about that before, but I suppose the trunk bag slipping off is always a possibility! And, I really like your bike. I've been sharing with friends that I may be selling several mountain bikes for a Surly and I'm trying to decide between the Disc Trucker, Ogre, Bridge Club, and Grappler. Cheers!

Hi Sean! thanks for the comments! Having had the bag actually come off once (without noticing at the time), I can attest to the fact that it can happen! Good luck making your choice and Happy New Year! By the way, I also did a post trip video with comments about what worked well and what didn't. You might want to check it out as well.

yup, agree with kickstand as long as it’s installed correctly.
@vickyjimandthelunatic2 жыл бұрын
I will assume my husband installed it correctly since it seems to work perfectly! It has been extremely handy and not in the way at all. I really like the fact that it’s centered on the bike and not on the side. Makes it more balanced when you use it.

really, you think it’s a good idea to install it correctly? how profound

I own a Long Haul Trucker - wonderful bike. Mirror and kickstand a must. Long Haul/Disc Truckers are heavy, especially when loaded. A kickstand makes a huge difference if doing some roadside service or just loading/unloading stuff in your panniers. I swapped my drop bars for Jones Loop bars and have loved them. Lots of hand position options, loads of real estate to mount things and better braking e.g. MTB brake levers vs road. Price upgrade but worth it. Safe travels

Thanks for the info. I might look into the Jones Loop bars for my next trip!

Thank you for this video. I'm interested in the mirror attachment you showed. It looks like the mirror is attached to the hood? Can you share the mirror make and model?
@vickyjimandthelunatic2 жыл бұрын
My husband found it in a web search but can't remember where he bought it. Most likely Amazon. It says "selle Italia" on the back. Yes, it is attached to the hood.

Dear Vicky, can you tell me which fenders and kickstand you put on your bike? I am struggling finding the right one for my Surly Disc Trucker... Thank you very much! :)
@vickyjimandthelunatic Жыл бұрын
Here is the kickstand info: Kickstand: www.amazon.com/Pletscher-Twin-Leg-Kickstand/dp/B004XFHSLC?th=1&psc=1 I gave details on all my added equipment in the Post Trip Bike Review video (it's in the notes) if you want to see anything else. The fenders say "SKS-GERMANY.COM" on them. I asked the bike shop to put some on and let them choose them. Hope this helps!

I've done three coast to coasts and up and down both coasts on my rim brake trucker. Sputnik. Only things I would suggest are switching from water bottles to a big water bladder. 3L. I keep mine on the front rack; makes for easy sipping all day. Ortlieb roll top saddle bags keep the weight lower on the bike for better handling and improved water resistance. Having 2 sets of disc brake pads taped under your saddle for emergencies. And switching to downtube shifters. They are superior in every way. Lighter, faster, easier, simpler. (Bonus. Always have 2 extra brake cables and 2 extra shift cables in you bags. I use the box my last chain came in to store them. Old cd cases work well too.)

That mirror will serve you well! I use a helmet mirror and wouldn’t road without it.
@vickyjimandthelunatic2 жыл бұрын
I tried a helmet mirror but couldn't ever adjust it correctly. It took some tinkering, but this one works perfectly now! I just have to remember to check it!
