Surpass Hobby Program Card. Solving ESC issues

Trying to solve the 3 main problems in stock ESC using this Program Card:
1. Low voltage cutoff too low (lower than 3.1 volts per cell)
2. Delays in throttle power delivery
3. Uncontrollable reverse speed

neutral range is the setting for how much neutral range your radio trigger has. something like what you stated. The general idea is better radios (sanwa , ko propo, futaba) you would want to set this to the lowest setting. And for less expensive radios you would want to set this to a higher percentage. The less neutral range you have set the tighter your range will be giving you a tighter control or activation of signal with less pull of the trigger. But this only works with radios that have a more narrow band of neutral. Setting the neutral range higher for less expensive radios with lower quality pots (potentiometers) will give you better response because your ESC will match the trigger pot you are using. So one shouldn't confuse this as as setting that can justbe setlow because one would think that would tighten up their range, thats would just mismatch your range. Matching your neutral range is more the idea here to get the best response. I have some Surpass Rocket V2 ESCs and Hobbystar V2 ESCs which all can use the Surpass or Hobbywing LED Number cards as well as the Surpass Single LED cards like used here. The problem is when using the Single LED Cards like shown here the ESC programmable options seem to work but they do not line up with the Options shown on the card. Also the ESCs all have way more options available than shown on this card. The best card I have found to use with the newer Version 2 , Version 1.1 (like seen here) and Version 1 ESCs is the small LED Number card that shows the number of the option being programmed as well as the number of the options choice.

Hi Ian, I notice that even if you use 12% deadband, your throttle is still sensitive. You just give it a slight pull and your truck moves, either forward or backward. For my car, when I pull the trigger, even after deadband, there is still a distance to go - I first hear the buzzing sound, and then keep pulling, the car start to move. How did you make it? Thanks.

I have been having issues where i'll run the car and ther motor has a weird whining but it goes well for a little while then the forward/reverse cuts out. The motor does get hot. Steering channels are ok but no forward then if i leave it for a min it start working again.. The ESC has the fan on it. I ordered one of these cards to see if i can tune the ESC to work better.

Have you tried to switch two wires on the motor and then switch reverse chanel mode on the transmiter, so then you should have slight delay on going back and a punch start forward ?

Thanks Ian, that car rips!! I got the 150A esc in the mailbox today, I wonder if it is any good for may HPI savage ''flux'' build. Time wil tell, is the esc getting hot after driving like that?

The ESC doesn't get hot that much. It has a strong cooling fan, and the weather in my place somehow helps. I've done a test and used up 2 batteries. The motor heats up more than the esc does. So use a bigger motor and lower kv on your hpi savage flux coz that monster truck is big. With at least 40 to 42mm diameter motor with kv less than 1800kv, you wouldn't have problems with temps on 6s

@@ianbudgetrc2574 its fun, no problem, I got the hpi 2200kv high tork motor in it, I gone be playing with the gears to get the right temp/power ratio, never used a cheap esc, and I hop to get as much fun out of it as you do. Thanks for the fast reply. ;o) Now gone watch the endurance test video.

I had the 120A version, ran 3s and the 5200kv motor it came with (was a combo). Esc smoked after over a month of use unfortunately, but it was good while it lasted.

Your voltage issues might be caused by cold weather. If you check voltages at home after they sat outside and discharged while you run consecutive packs, their voltage will fall below the cutoff. Also if you are checking voltage in cold weather, every second counts as they are getting colder. If you are checking at home, waiting till they warm up will give different measurement

when I plug the card in to the esc everythings going good and all the lights turn on, but then the ''work state'' led starts flashing blue and the buttons dont work. it is a nimh battery so im trying to turn off LVC. Do you have any idea what the heck I should do?

Hi bro. Uhhm when the blue light flashes, you won't be able to use any button. What I did was that I just reconnected it and secured it tightly to the 3-wire ESC cable. And it worked. The blue light stop flashing

60 amp esc + 3900kv motor with size 36mm x 50mm should be fine on 3s lipo. What battery do you use?

@@dustinplee5067 firstly, you connected the program card to the esc wire correctly, right? If so, then try to press reset. If everything is still lit up, then there must be a problem with the program card itself. It should display the default settings right away after connecting it to the esc.

I own the same ESC, surpass 150A. And have a problem with it. When i start the car this some delay from ESC ( 1-2s). Can i fix it with the program card set?

2 seconds is too long of a delay, brother.. Initially, my esc throttle delay was around 0.5 seconds and this program card was able to somehow improve my throttling. It decreased the delay. But lately, when I put in a stronger motor, the delay worsened. I learned from a commenter that it is because of "bottlenecking". Bottlenecking happens when a strong motor demands so much power from a weak ESC such as this 150amp surpass. So, the esc cannot provide the instant power that the motor is asking when you do instant full throttle, causing delays in power delivery. Bottlenecking is dangerous coz it can burn the esc. The Surpass Hobby ESC is not that ideal for high power runs. So, the solution is to pair a motor with fair power with it. Use the Surpass Hobby 2000kv on 4s or 3s with light gearing to reduce stress on the surpass ESC. What's your motor, pinion gear, and battery?

@@ianbudgetrc2574 the delay of esc is partially affected from TX to RX . I fixed it, now the delay is only 0.5-1s. I think it's possible to fix it the same way you did. I am using the motor that came with the ZD 9021 (motor B4465). 17pinion gear and 3S lipo. i buyed the program card set for the ESC but it not the same you use. you have the red card , and i buy the white. it look like your card just diffrence the colour. hope it usefull.

@@soapnguyen314 good one on the transmitter. Yes you can try this program card. your motor is fine. And 3s is fine. But your 17t pinion is a bit high. 13t to 15t is fine.

@@stergios77 max6 is bigger and can handle 8s. The max8 only 6s. For 1/10 and 1/8 scale, max8 is ok. For 1/8, 1/7, and 1/6 scale, max6 is good. You can have the biggest which is the Max5. It's good for 1/7, 1/6, and 1/5 scale RC. Depends on which car u use. For speed runs, Max5 is the best, followed by max6. For bashing 1/8 truck, max6 is the best

@@arifisa7272 small cogging is normal. But if it's too much, there could be something wrong. Try checking all 3 motor wires if they are properly connected to the esc. Or it might need to be reprogrammed by setting the throttle end points
