Surplus Swedish Hungarian Mongrel Mess Kit Modification

So I appear to have done a complete 180 on the Trangia. Once upon a time I wondered what the big deal was with a Trangia spirit burner, now I've fallen fully down the surplus Trangia mess kit rabbit hole. In this video I modify the Swedish windshield component to enable a better nesting fit with the Hungarian Surplus Mess Kit.

Cleaned my trianga up with brass come up good. Cleaned the pin holes and the burner itself. 👍🏻 🔥 🙂 looks really good now. Sprayed the windshield stove and Hungarian mess kit with black stove heat proof paint. Doesn't look so old and battered now. Done the modifications of the side slots and bottom square on the windshield by making them slightly bigger. 👍🏻and cutting it with a small hacksaw. The Hungarian mess kit fits properly in the swedish army windshield. 👍🏻 Have the kuksa wildo cups inside the mess kit. Cost for about everything will be £35 quid. £15 mess kit and wind shield from military mart. Spray paint heat proof black £10 on eBay Kuksa wildo cup on Amazon £3. Meths £2 Brasso £2

I didn't cut the swedish trianga stove around the top to shorten it. I cut down the sides and trimmed off to make the side slots a little bigger and where the lid handle fits in the trianga square I made that a bit bigger so it would slide Down more which worked. Left the top on. As you cut yours off. The mess kit then slotted all the way down. I used a small hack saw blade, measured it and then marked it, then cut it off. Not that hard to do as the aluminium was quite easy to cut. I then filed it off the burs. 👍🏻 🙂 also used pliers to take off excess cut aluminium strips. That's how I made mine fit. I then sprayed my kit with heat proof spray paint. Painted my stove and mess kit a satin black. Heat resistant paint up to 1100 C. Yet to test it out. I used black stove spray paint. 👍🏻 Also get the wildo cups on Amazon they fit in the mess kit. For about £7 for two of them. The trianga ones don't fit in the Hungarian mess kit but the wildo ones do. 👍🏻 🙂 To clean the trianga burner. First clean with an old tooth brush around the pin hole jets. Clean in water or add washing up liquid. Let it dry naturally. Use a needle if holes are still clogged. The olive ring use olive oil around it and place it back in the lid. Use brasso to clean up the outside of the trianga burner. Then test with meths and light it. The jets should not be clogged and the flame is higher and improved. Your burner should be better and improved now. I watched a KZbin video on how to clean trianga burners. 👍🏻 🙂 🔥

That's ingenious, a far more elegant solution than my dodgy chop job 👏🏼👏🏼 I may buy another windshield and give that a go 👍🏼 I've just this week taken delivery of a wildo cup. Nice compact bit of kit 👍🏼

@@AggyGoesOutdoors the wildo cups are foldable. Or a wildo Kuksa cup is small enough to fit in the trianga stove without the meths plastic container. Instead take the meths in a normal bottle that it comes in when you buy it. 👍🏻 🙂 leave the plastic meths bottle out. The kuksa wildo cup fits in the mess kit. Kuksa cup on Amazon. They are shaped like an egg are green, keep your hands warm holding your brew. 🍵

I got one of those little green folding ones, really like it. I've yet to take it out for a cuppa yet though 👍🏼👍🏼

In all honesty I've not weighed it, I'm going to guess a wee bit heavier, but the thicker gauge aluminium definitely makes for a better cooking experience having used it a bit now, and the way the pot support is integrated into the windshield is just plain "neat" That said, I'm going to weigh them now. 👍🏼

Ok so cheapy Chinese set plus DIY windshield (no pot pegs) 278g maybe another 30g for pegs ; Hungarian Mess set with windshield 675g. Considering the much larger capacity that wasn't actually nearly as much of a difference as I expected.

Useful bag to put the Trianga stove in is A British Army Gas mask bag, the olive one is better. A bit taller than the DPM one. Cost about £6 from military mart or £7 on eBay. 👍🏻👝I have the olive one for it. You can also fit your tea and coffee etc in the haversack .

I have far too many cook kits and stoves but now I want this one as well! I cant believe how cheap the set is! Having said I have too many, I don't have a trangia yet. Not sure if it's for me.

Ditto, I'm hoping I don't have stove addiction but I think I'm on a slippery slope 🤦🏻‍♂️ I was the very same, I turned my nose up at the Trangia for ages, but it's nice and silent for stealthy woodland activities 😉👍🏼 And there's just something wholesome about knowing it's decades old and still just works 😊🔥 thanks for watching and commenting 👍🏼🤷‍♂️
