very cool! I was an Army Grunt and we were stuck with whatever garbage the Army would hand us. But I never got the mickey mouse boots....I just picked up a pair of these for my Sierra Nevada explorations, and I'm glad to have learned something about them. Thanks.

I wore these for most of the year when I was stationed in Alaska at an Air Force radar site. Working outdoors almost every day my feet were never cold, never wet. Even walking across the frozen over Naknek river (about 1/2 mile) they kept my feet warm.

I have these great boots, had to dye mine black for work. Also stationed in Alaska, but in army so I wore the ultra heavy but very effective Mickey mouse boots. I added an elastic string to the top drawstring to skip the step of tying the top. Also used 550 for the laces for strength. 3M Scotchgard works great as waterproofing without the effects of oilskin wax.

I bought a pair of these (size small) and they fit my US ladies size 9 feet perfectly with plenty of toe wiggle room (which is super important!). I already have a pair of Mickey Mouse boots but dislike how heavy they are so I reserve them for polar vortex weather in the Midwest. But I plan to wear these Air Force mukluks as my everyday winter boot. When it's not snowing, I like to lace them up, wrap the lace around my ankle, then fold the gaiter down in half, making sure the zipper guard is completely covering the zipper. Then I tighten the gaiter lace around my ankle too. They look very cool this way and keep my ankles extra warm.

Excellent advice, it's what I wore for 4 tours in Antarctica. More advice, dry the out at the end of the day it you can using a boot dryer. Wear a thinner wicking sock next to your skin then a warmer thicker sock over that. For better ankle support I wrapped over my boot at the ankle extra wide cotton shoe laces. Now good for all day in minus forty below.

My buddy that was in the AIR FORCE for years just bought me a fresh pair of these. It's been cold in Alaska recently and my toes have been hating it. I put some light liners in them and put on of thin pair of socks to go out in the -33F Paradise I call home and test them. I thought i was gonna be back in 20...30 m. judging by how light and almost barefoot my feet felt in these boots. I was out side for over 2 hours and never even felt a chill. I have a pair of the N1B's and love them. I use the original wool liners, those are great too, but you are correct if you don't get them laying right they can bunch up and be uncomfortable. I got the large and have enough room to double payer the original wool liners and it is a good fit. My feet run cold. If one wants a waterproof option you can order a pair of the Neos overboots on Amazon and use them in place of the canvas muk. They work great too, but you have to measure the muks and match them to the size of the Neos. You just transfer the wool insoles and liner to the Neos and use it just like the canvas muk, works great for wetter conditions.

If my toes were at risk, I'd spend the extra few bucks on some Wiggy's mukluks or Neos overboots. Either are cheaper than frostbite treatment. Wiggy's are waterproof, but the Lamalite insulation keeps the moisture from your feet. Insulated Neos require venting occasionally. Both can be field dried in deep cold by removing them and letting the moisture freeze inside. The frost falls right out with a couple of knocks, and there's nowhere for moisture to remain..

Great video, and very cool to discover this product. Have you tried waxing them? I understand the oilcloth treatment destroyed the boots, but maybe wax, used for waxing canvas jackets and such, might not have such a destructive effect and could increase the moisture resistance of the boot. Is it possible to rub wax on the canvas, then use a heat gun to wave across to melt wax into canvas to water seal them? The wax will disappear into the canvas fabric. I've seen a Polish Lavvu done in this way. It repelled a garden hose spray like nobodys business 👍👀
@MakersMovementDIY3 жыл бұрын
That would probably separate the canvas from the rubber. They really don't need that level of waterproofing. They work great right out of the box.

Me, I figured I put 1 insole in the mukluk and the other insole in the liner, then liner into boot!! Can you tell which way is the way the but was designed for. Thanks
@MakersMovementDIY2 жыл бұрын
I think it was designed for two insoles under the liner or one under and the second as a spare for when the first get wet. I have never put insoles into the liners either the issued ones or aftermarket. But you do what works for you, that's always the best way.

@@annaliesejohnson6429 both of my pairs have metal zippers. I didnt know there was a version with plastic. I would stick to metal unless I could check them out in person.

Interesting. I have followed you for a few years now and I like your approach to these things. If you don't mind; like the concept of one tool survival, could you give your idea of one set of foot wear ?
@MakersMovementDIY5 жыл бұрын
Cool thanks for following me. Not sure what you mean by one set of footwear but I'll take a shot. IMO the most usable set would be something current issue with one of the military services that fits your personal style and taste. They are usually the most modern materials, durable, and built to serve in every climb and place. And most importantly affordable and readily available. Hope that answers the query.

@@MakersMovementDIY how about a vid on your ideas of proper footwear? A two parter, one for all year and one for seasonal? Feet and hands are very important parts, they take you places and do the things that need doing.

@@nirvana613 What I did was buy a clothing pattern for a hooded pullover fleece shirt. I improvised the collar section and added a few inches of length to make it more of a tunic. It was relatively simple if you approach the project one small solution at a time you will have no problem.

Hello..I do 18th century reenactments and the use of heavy duck cloth was prevalent..The British foot troops would purposely paint their tall canvas leggings with black milk paint to make them water proof...In turn, many a re-enactors (including myself) have made duck cloth canvas leggings and Rev War "spats" and painted them with Acrylic latex Paint. Conversely we have taken large painting tarps made of a heavy canvas and have painted them with wood deck stain water-proof coating (i.e. BEHR) and that also makes the canvas waterproof and lends itself very well to making haversacks, wood-pile tarps, and even smaller tarps you can sleep under....You may 1st think well that will make canvas way too stiff and eventually will break the woven fibers down and give way to ripping or leaks...But not so at all...the paint and waterproof stain coatings soak into the weaves and break down and become somewhat flexible and still remain waterproof. Of course unless the whole purpose here is to try and take advantage of the breath ability OF the canvas for cold -dry weather...In which case waterproofing still helps keeps melted snow off, but yes your feet will get sweaty... So I am wondering if you have ever tried either of these 2 techniques on the upper parts of the Muks..if so, what was your finding with the rubber soles? - Following!
