Lesson Ideas:
1. Listen and watch for the "Surprise"!
2. Discuss Franz Joseph Haydn and why he composed this symphony (go to: kids.kiddle.co/Symphony_No._9...)
3. For the "A section" have students "tip-toe" for each pair of eighth notes and look at a different classmate on each quarter note. Clap or give a surprised face on the accented "surprise" part. Practice first without the music and then with. OR play non-pitched percussion instruments.
4. Have students decide a body percussion (snap, clap, pat, stamp) to play on each color (green, pink, blue) or use non-pitched percussion instruments. Practice first without the music and then with.
5. Discuss the form of the song (ABAB), its dynamics, what an “accent” is, and have fun moving or playing along!
Be sure to practice safe distancing during Covid-19. Students usually tip-toe freely through a shared space, but this lesson can easily be adapted to moving in-place or seated at a desk
