I’m not saying that I like all of the changes to the river scape (I go back every Xmas to be with family but, I fear not this year) but I think Bris has pretty much got it right.

Take it from 40 yr veteran of Aussie highways. Kangaroos don't attack bright lights. They become disoriented by the lights and take off in any direction. Of course a koala is not a bear. Great video. See

Agree with you Ian but I have my own theory about roos and headlights. When I was trucking I always dipped my lights when I spotted them just off the road. The reason I did that was, a lot of the ones that jumped in front of my truck were doing so because they were being spooked by the shadows that moved when the high beam was on. Of course this theory is thrown out the window when the dopey ones just stayed on the road.

Southbank Park, where the pool is, was the site for the World Expo in 1988, they have done a brilliant job re developing it to what it is today, it is stunning at night

The history of the South Bank Parklands is that the whole area was resumed by the State Government as the site for World Expo 1988. It was a semi-industrial, low income housing area with a high Indigenous population. There were lot's of protests over people being displaced from affordable housing and the impact on the local Indigenous community. After World Expo was finished the area was 'returned to the people' and the Parklands built. As the Parklands has a major railway running close by it is very popular with people who can catch the train in and is very accessible to many outer communities of Brisbane.

Fun Fact... Americans memorialized Captain James Cook too, in the form of the TV show "Star Trek". Hints are in the captains name "Captain James Kirk" and the ship was called "Enterprise" against Cook's ship which was named "Endeavour". Also, the other characters are based on Cook's crew. Tourist tip #2 - If you get to Noosa which is a luxury beach area north of Brisbane, give the trendy shops a miss for a morning and go to the tourist information centre and book a ticket for the morning Tin Can Bay boat trip. It's an early morning boat trip through the Noosa canals and it gets you to Tin Can Bay in time for the two wild dolphins who visit most mornings to get hand fed by the tourists. On the way you'll learn about the dolphins and their history. If you do go give the cranky Pelican that also lives there a wide berth.

I'm from the Gold Coast and now live in Brisbane, so this was a nice video to watch! You were disappointed by not seeing surfers at Surfers Paradise. Thing is, you're probably much more likely to see surfers at Burleigh Heads - where you waited for the airport bus. I think that's one of the best beaches on the GC. Also you can pretty reliably see a mob of wild kangaroos at a spot in Currumbin Valley, which is also a really beautiful area. BTW that lizard is an Eastern Water Dragon. They're pretty harmless :) You wouldn't want to get scratched or bitten by one I suppose but they'd run away from you before they tried something like that - you'd probably have to try picking it up to get hurt by it. I think with most of Australia's wildlife it's a 'live and let live' type of thing.

Oh, I forgot to say too that Point Danger (where the Cook Memorial Lighthouse was) is a popular whale-watching site during winter. Last year when I took a Swedish tourist there we also saw a pod of dolphins :)

Koalas in the wild can actually be very aggressive! If you ever come across one its best to leave it alone! If it needs help or is injured there are koala-help hotlines you can call to get someone qualified to come out to help it 🐨

@@HappyHoppe Hehe, there are lots of brilliant fish 'n chips shops all along the Redcliffe Peninsula. If you drive along the any of the beach roads along Sandgate and Redcliffe you'll find one almost every block (that's not an exaggeration, lol - some blocks have more than one). www.dougsseafoodcafe.com.au/ is one that I and the locals frequent often. It's not touristy looking but the fish 'n chips are good. If you want a more flash joint (upmarket) I've been to The Famous Fish Pan, which I enjoyed. I don't live local (I live in Brisbane South, but am a frequent visitor), so there may be better ones (the locals always know the best). It's great eating fish 'n chips and with a view of the ocean. Also takeaway and eating them sitting on the beach is pretty awesome, and quite traditional in South East Queensland. When I was a child, we got fish 'n chips wrapped up in newspaper. If you Google "fish and chips redcliffe/moreton bay/sandgate/shorncliffe" you'll find literally a dizzying number of joints to choose from. Enjoy the rest of your holiday!!

I live in suburban Melbourne and there are literally hundreds of roos all over our suburb (which is next to a large reserve). It’s very common for them to jump out at night unfortunately and the most dangerous thing you can do is serve to miss them- we’ve totally 2 cars over 10 years thanks to Roos jumping out at us! I’ve never turned my lights off may I should next time though...

They have a beach in the city because the ones on the Redcliffe Peninsula and Sandgate are into Moreton bay so they're very shallow and don't have waves. Also they just could because why not. For anyone reading this, in the Gold Coast, you can drive to Coombabah Lakelands Conservation Reserve and see hundreds of kangaroos in the wild. You can also see koalas in the trees but you need good eyesight as they sit up high in the eucalyptus trees and camouflage well. It is free, but you will need a car to get there as it is in the northern area of the Gold Coast.

It's a real buzz for a 78 y/o man born and bred in Sydney, Australia, and now lives in Western Australia to see young people coming to our country and enjoying themselves. Kangaroos are really nocturnal and spend most of their time is spent feeding at night and laying around all day. (like some humans, e.g. my teen age grand kids). If you approach a Kangaroo in your car at night on a road and it wants to run, it almost always will run where it can see, usually in the lights from your car. Humans are the same. That's why sometimes drunks and burglars get run over with cars (I think)

When you were at the Captain Cook Memorial you forgot to mention that it is placed right on the border between Queensland and New South Wales. And in summer there is a one hour time difference between the 2 States. Great vid though. There are plenty of wild Kangaroos in Wacol just south west of the city.

Fun Fact: Captain James Cook was not a captain. He was a Lieutenant. The person in charge of a navy ship is called the Captain which is why he is usually called "Captain Cook" but his rank was 3 steps below captain. His correct name and title was Lt James Cook. Even today only the person in command of the largest ships in the Royal Navy (i.e. HMS Queen Elizabeth and HMS Prince Of Wales) are Captains.

We've got Koala's in Australia but we don't have any Bears unless you go to a zoo then you might find some Bears.
