Of course the dog was afraid. It's just been removed from its parents, new home, a guy it didn't known, and now behind held by a crying woman it doesn't know. Far better to introduce it calmly, give it a corner/crate with a blanket from home, etc. without the rush of Christmas. Dog will almost always be scared, but you can minimize it.
