My parents surprised me with a car when I turned 16 1978. Only their was a catch. It was the 1954 Bel Air in the garage. They said if can get it running it was mine. I added brake fluid and charged the battery. Then I had to add seatbelts and then registered. Loved the car. It was given to my Mom when she graduated. I wish I kept it.

@@teatimetel174 It needed a lot of work when someone plowed into the right rear quarter panel. Then transmission failed. It sat for 10 years. I sold it to a guy that wanted to restore it. I believe I saw it 10 years ago in a car club. I say that as it had a rare hood ordement and hub caps. I could never afford to buy it back. I now still drive my Dads 1968 F100

@@jamesb.9472 I would not Know. My newest car is a 2007 Mercury Grand Marquis. You can charge it. Even most sealed batteries can open charge. It would be a shame if you had to replace the battery everytime you leave the lights on.

Happy birthday!! My parents never gave me a car but they did let me borrow theirs on occasion. I bought my very 1st car and paid for it, insurance, gas and all maintenance on my own. Made me value my car even more. Now that I’m older I understand why and I’m glad they did the way they did. I gave both of my kids their 1st car but they pay insurance, gas and all maintenance.

I think Robert was saying that he learned a tremendous lesson and Life Learning values regarding his investment in obtaining and taking care of a car. A lot of kids these days don't understand that because if you ride by the High Schools these days, you will notice that most of the cars are less than 3 to 5 years old, and you know kids can't afford cars like that and are not footing their own bills in any monetary way. The cars are just too expensive for kids to afford on their own. I started working when I was 16. I didn't have a car till I was able to get a better job in college and buy a $1,000 car. It even had a slow leaking radiator and I would have to pull over sometimes and pour stop leak in it. And mind you I'm a girl, not some guy who this was very easy for. I loved my car because I worked hard for it, and I learned about the engine. I would read what people say a little more carefully. Because it is a huge investment to take on a car in knowledge just as much as monetarily. No, it is not going to gain value unless it is something vintage or odd like that. But there are different definitions of investment. Example, two people who engage in a marriage are investing in each other for the rest of their lives to be by each other's side. That's all I have to say about this, and I hope everyone who agrees or doesn't agrees will live a happy life and be happy for others when they get nice things. The key to children getting cars is the parents teaching their children the knowledge of owning a car as well.

My grandparents gave a car to my cousin and sister at their 18th birthday. When it was my turn they said could not afford it but grandfather had a Toyota celica said we can share it loved the car. He got into a accident totaled the car probably would still have it today

A belated HAPPY BIRTHDAY to the birthday girl. Not to be too forward but I love that beautiful hair!! The only time I got a car free was when I traded one in for another and also got $5000 to boot. So far as I can remember I paid all of my car costs and insurance and I've been through quite a few cars. If I'm correct, you've got a couple of years before you can drive legally with more than one person under the age of 18 in the car. Drive safe and enjoy the car but DON'T let peer pressure get you to make bad moves while driving. I bet you'll do just fine.🙂 Enjoy!!!!!!! 🙂

I was going to buy a sports car my mother said no your first car is going to a boat meaning huge. I said wait I am paying for everything with my own money. Well my first car ended up being a 1977 ford LTD 2 which was a battleship. The car was 10 years old but in good shape. I was 18 coming home from work when a girl in a Subaru hit me head on at 60 mph. Thankfully nobody was killed and I walked away without a scratch. I thought wow if I got a sports car like I wanted I would have been killed. So I was happy I lost that argument with my mother.
