We go through so much as children of immagrants. I remember shopping for my quinceañera dress at a nice mall in my town. My dad saved money to get me the dress ofmy dreams. We went into a boutique and right away the sales associate kicked us out. I barely step foot in the shop and she yells out loud, "We don't serve your kind. Ross is on the other side of town." I felt so bad for my dad, I lied and told him they were closing early. I was too devastated to tell him the truth. My father worked so hard to get me everything I needed and extra hard to get me things just to make me happy. I love you papi and I will never let your sacrifices go to waste. ❤ Adrienne, your Papi Lindo reminds me of my papi. Super funny and sweet. 😊

I’m from a Caribbean family, my mom is Jamaican and speaks perfect English but she immigrated to a French province but she doesn’t speak any French and I remember at a parent teacher conference, this one teacher would be so annoyed that my mom didn’t speak French and that me translating for her was time consuming and she would say things like speaking French should be a minimum requirement to immigrate here and my mom tries to stay strong and she almost never cries if front of people but I remember how sad she looked especially since she knew how hard it was for me to pick up the French language because I raised in a only English environment till I was 13 and I think she blamed herself when she saw me struggle in school. However, I’m grateful because now I speak two languages.

I don’t know how old your parents are but I am a 63 year old Black woman from TN. When schools were integrated here I was in 5th grade. Your Mother’s school story definitely resonates with me. The teacher separated the whites from the blacks. And if you raised your hand to asked a question, the teacher took her ruler and smack the black students hand, thereby discouraging us from asking questions. I never told my parents until I graduated from high school. I knew if I told my Daddy he would go to the school and I was afraid of him getting arrested or worst. Your Mother’s story brought tears to my eyes. To this day I try not to think about school starting in the 5th grade.

They are Mexican/Peruvian and grew up in San Diego and went to a “colored” school. Our roots are so important 😭 my grandmother’s family immigrated from Sicily and over the generations, our language has been lost because their parents wouldn’t allow them to speak Italian so they wouldn’t be bullied in school. They had to assimilate. Luckily we still have a lot of recipes and traditions, but i remember being so sad from a young age that we didn’t know our language. Anyways, I love this!! So beautiful!!

When I was 7 years old, I watched my dad who was not a legal citizen unfortunately, be taken away in cop cars. He was deported and I haven’t seen him face to face since then. He was a immigrant from Mexico who came to America when the border was just a line in the sand. A young man with a 6th grade education who’d been beaten starved and drugged came and started a family here in American had 4 beautiful children. I went to work with him often so I know he was a hard worker and my mom despite her personal feelings can’t be in denial about that. I’m now 23 and would do anything to travel to Chihuahua, Mexico 🇲🇽 to see my dad. He’s been very hesitant about me going which is why I never did. He thinks it’s too dangerous for an American who speaks no Spanish, but I’d do anything. “To dance with my father again”.

Papi Lindo warms my heart! I have very similar family situations - I’m British and my family are immigrants from India. My Dad and all his siblings have 2 birthdays! There are also some who have more than one name from the documents that got them to the U.K.

Something happened to me a few weeks ago and out of nowhere my eyes sweat every time something emotional happens! I love this! I can’t wait to get more info on my family! And I’m going to need the name of Papi Lindo’s optometrist because he saw everything on that computer screen! ❤️

Where i am from in Africa, we know almost eveyone in our family. At some point you dont know how exactly you are related to someone cause its so long. Its like this : my moms', uncle's, daugter's, husbands' cousin's, son😊 like literally. Thanks to weddings, where a whole speech is allocated to introducing all family members. And btw weddings here usually dont have invitation cards. Everybody comes. 😂

My grandmother would arrive home on her visit an hour later than she should have because she found a relative at the market almost all the time. And I'm like mama are you (we) related to everyone? I'd vowed not to date anyone from my tribe because we could be closely related

I would absolutely love a video dedicated to Papi Lindo y su herencia y historia. Pq me siento k he's so sweet OMGGG and I feel so bad that he just sits so happily and silent, it'd be great to see a part 2 acknowledging and going deeper into Papi Lindo's side.

Adrienne: Watching this video brought me to tears mainly because so much of it, I can relate too. I am 53 and first generation born in America as a Basque. You may or may not know what Basque is. It's the area of the Pyrenees Mountains on the border of France and Spain. My mother came to this country when she was 2 and my father came here when he was 19. When your mother spoke of her mother and how she didn't know he was married, well the same thing happened to my grandmother (or "amatchi" in Basque). The day my mother was born (in their family home by a midwife) there was a funeral procession going down the street in front of the little Basque village of "Aldede" for a little 2 year old girl who had passed. Well it happened to be the daughter of my mother's biological father. So my grandmother found out the exact same day that her "boyfriend" had fathered many children in the mid 40's. My grandmother was already ashamed as it was to have become pregnant out of wedlock, yet through all the criticism she was under (even from some of her siblings) for making a mistake, she told that man that the "other woman" needed him more due to the extreme loss of losing a child. Also back in those days, women who were with child out of wedlock would drown their children to avoid the shame. My grandmother would have nothing to do with that. She then worked her "beep" off for the next 2 years to come to America with my mother for a better life. They came legally against her brother that was already here in the states. I am so proud of the strength I come from. My father: he is one of 17 children from another town in the Basque country. Called Esterencuby. He came to American in 1957 with nothing. Traveled with is sister (my aunt). No language, no money. Came through Ellis Island like they all did in those days. Ended up in Fresno, CA as a sheepherder for 2 years. Took him 6 months to work off the sleeping bag his boss gave him and another 14 months to save to get his teeth fixed. He would come to downtown Fresno to a local Basque restaurant and that's where he met my mother. She was a waitress there and my grandmother would do all the alterations and laundry for all the single herders in the area. My father left his mother at age 19 and latched onto to a woman who become his mother-in-law. I am very FORTUNATE to have heard all the stories (good and bad, poor and rich) growing up. My family was large, however through time we loss some along the way. Like my dad, he passed in CA in 2019. I carry these memories with pride. Both of my parents are rich with family history. Your sister mentioned that she could probably not do what your parents did. Coming to another country with language barriers and all. I completely agree. I have often said that. I am so proud of what they ALL did. All immigrants. They did anything and everything to give us a GREAT LIFE! God Bless them all! My brother is a senior staff writer for American Dad. He graduated UCLA Film School in 2004. That was the day that he said he wanted to write the story of our parents into a movie. I certainly hope he does that. Thanks for sharing your Ancestry!
