One of the substances in the glowsticks should be an ester, which feels oily, but isn't oil. Because of this, there won't be any kind of soap, which he can use to emulsify.

Luminol! I did a final chemistry experiment using glowsticks last year. Getting the glowsticks open is never fun. The reason the blue glowsticks show up clear is that luminol (the chemical that creates the glow) inherently glows a blue colour. So no dye is needed! Typically the clear reactor liquid is hydrogen peroxide. The reaction is not deadly in small quantities, but shouldn't be consumed in large amounts. It can cause eye and skin irritation, as well as throat irritation if consumed (so keep it away from your pets). Also, it will dye everything it touches. I destroyed five stirring rods through the course of my experiment just because they were dyed a green-yellow after like three uses. Effectively, the glowstick contains hydrogen peroxide (the clear liquid) and a luminol/Dibutyl phthalate plus a dye. The luminol is kept within a glass container within the glowstick, as seen here. thick plastic exterior is used to allow the glowsticks to bend, but also to protect your hands from the glass breaking inside. Glass is used since it can easily break, unlike, say, a plastic. Dibutyl phthalate is also used to make plastics soft and flexible, so using an internal plastic container may not be as effective. Basically, glowsticks are a ton of fun and if careful (plus adult supervision if you're a kid), opening them can be an interesting experiment. Luminol is also what's used on crime scenes, in order to react with blood to make it glow.

The heat, or lack thereof, either speeds up or slows down the chemical reaction that makes them glow. The two liquids become more viscous when chilled and end up moving and combining slower. The opposite happens when you warm them up. Also, the inside of the glass vial is filled with a phenyl oxalate and fluorescent dye solution and outside the vial is a hydrogen peroxide solution. This also may explain why the liquid soap containing sodium hydroxide (lye) would accelerate or enhance the reaction.

What if you start a chain reaction by laying out all the flammable chemicals you have made till present right next to each other and igniting one of them with power of sun to start the chain reaction.

Shlok Bhakta Yes it is possible You can use the Glowiest Glow paint *LIT* Which would absorb light and give it out in the dark It also gives out light when it is warm so the heat from the car is enough to light it up And no Laws broken

+Shlok Bhakta it is possible with OLED technology. OLEDS can be made on almost any surface and will make it glow when power is applied. Off course it will use some electricity to make it glow, but it is possible with current technology.

You guys should start a series where viewers can vote on what you guys use for a video. Then you take that thing and for example put it in the vacuum chamber, put it in the foundry and put it into liquid nitrogen. Kind of like a extreme torture test!

Hey Nate, did you test mixing soap with the activator or the dye? I wonder if one of them is going to activate on the soap alone. If not, I bet adding soap before mixing is going to make the initial reaction super luminescent.

recently did a color-mixing chart in art -- you'd be surprised how many ways you can make green (including with orange). Similarly, orange is just lighter hued brown, hence why you can use oranges in skin tones that would be considered tan, and why you got orange with the bright fluid.

sashidhar kumar check out nurdrages glow stick videos, he goes through the science of making the colors and using h2o2 as the activator
@landonlomenick5175
@landonlomenick5175 6 жыл бұрын
obviously it is an exothermic reaction because it lets off energy. the way that it works is, in the plastic part(not the glass vial) there is the chemical H2O2, and in the glass vial there is different chemicals. When you break the glass vial, the two chemicals mix together and go through an exothermic reaction called, chemo-luminescence.
@GibbySaysHi
@GibbySaysHi 6 жыл бұрын
The oily substance is probably there to limit the interaction between the two chemicals so the glow lasts longer. Adding the soap binds to the oil allowing more of the material to react with each other.

Can you see how Liquid Nitrogen affects the glow sticks? Also, What would the glow stick fluid do if you mixed it with molten salt?
@1Jamesinator
@1Jamesinator 6 жыл бұрын
The problem I see with the molten salt idea is that it glows because of the heat, so it'd potentially be difficult if not impossible to see anything happen.

@WarlandWriter
@WarlandWriter 6 жыл бұрын
No the reason they used compressed air is that it would otherwise take the projectile too long to accelerate, which would cause it to heat up too much and would weld it to the inside of the barrel of the railgun. They had to give it some initial momentum to prevent that.
