Watch me surprising strangers out of nowhere in Chinatown. This is part #3 in a series about Yokohama Chinatown in Japan. I spoke fluent Chinese and Japanese back and forth switching languages. This made the local people and made them smile. Learning a new language opens up the door to so many opportunities and friendships. Make sure to see the rest of the series too.
Below are language learning tools I have personally used for years. Direct purchases of software from these links goes to supporting this channel.

Now that we are all more mobile than we were in the last few months, don’t let your language studies slip. There are ways to keep studying while out and about. I highly recommend the audio lessons in the video description above. I listened to audio lessons all the way to Yokohama and back today (3 hours). -Anming

Yup, that's a cultural nuance. In Chinese and Japanese, if someone compliments you, you could say "thank you," but the best response is to reject the compliment politely.

I think English people can understand various American accents more often than American people can understand various English accents. I believe this is because people in the UK have been exposed to various US accents via films (movies) and TV for decades, whereas I don't think the numerous UK accents are heard in the US media often, if at all. Would you agree?

Translation is tricky. Although she asked why you can speak in literal terms, the more accurate translation is “what circumstances led you to learn Chinese?” and possible answers expected are “I am studying abroad”, “my parents are long term expats and I grew up here”, etc. That’s why she was like “no no” when you said “why others don’t?”, she meant she was asking a different question. A more extreme version of such translation issues is when asked how old you are, it gets translated to “why is it always you?” Hope this helps!

I think you should be a little more humble, when they say “you speak perfect” you should take the compliment and say you’ve been working hard. It’s discouraging to see a foreigner that knows 3 languages almost fluently and see these workers working in stores in awe while you tell them you’re heading to college to finish the masters program. Be humble and say “thank you” especially in Japanese. They know you’re showing off, especially since your grammatical speaking is on par with theirs

As a native Chinese speaker and an N1 level Japanese speaker, I quite agree... It was quite obvious that OP was showing off her skills, from the conversation with the Shanghai lady (where she was using some internet slangs like 热死宝宝了 which was a weird choice to start a conversation and also saying things like "why can't other foreigners speak Chinese" which was a bit rude imo, as a Shanghai-raised person), to clearly bragging to the Japanese convenience store lady (yes, saying that you speak a little bit of Japanese is polite, but right after that OP said that her written Japanese is better and how she just submitted a thesis... which instantly negates the politeness imo). It's great that foreigners are learning Chinese and Japanese, but I think a big part of learning a language is also learning about its culture.

@@thereisnoaddress I agree that OP's switching to Chinese in Japan was an act done purposefully to invite such reactions, so perhaps her responses could have been less blunt. People asking how is it she can speak Chinese in Japan of all places is an understandable reaction. But I can also feel for why OP phrased her seemingly rude response of "为什么别人不会?“, to the first lady's question (which I found to be a rather rude way to ask the question). This resonated with my personal experience. When I meet (some) people from the Anglosphere, I get a bit ticked off when they exclaim in awe that I can speak English or tell me that my English is good, just because I extended a greeting or uttered a single sentence in English. Why is it surprising that a non Caucasian speaks English? It sounds like a harmless question, but after a few times, it starts to feel rather condescending, as if to say the default setting is that a non Caucasians should not be expected to speak English in the first place. Imagine a person being complimented every time for speaking the simplest of English sentences, it just feel patronizing and a bit demeaning. From OP's videos, she gets complimented often when she speaks Japanese and Chinese. So, I imagine, that when the person at the shrine asked what she might have thought to be a harmless and sincere question, struck a nerve with OP and elicited that response. This is just my brain trying to rationalizing her actions, and OP might have had different reasons for reacting as such.

Temperature averages 114 to120 degrees Fahrenheit mid-April to mid-October. I put towel on seat, T-shirt on steering wheel and stick shift to drive my car in Summer. Winter is nice in Sacramento, California, almost I never seen Japanese students here. My Japanese roommate and friends from Japan told me they like to study in northwest USA because weather fits them.

The "why is it that other people can't speak Chinese" reply is a bit disingenuous, as the entire channel is based on the fact that this is rare in this combination. If you were an Asian Girl and contemplated an Occidental Pearl channel where you showed off to random native English speakers in Germany how good you can speak English then I bet you would have a tough time collecting a decent amount of similar reactions.

But you'll also notice in a numerous videos that Anming has stated that she isn't special, and with dedication and willingness, proficiency in new languages is something available to anyone. We do need to get out of the habit of assuming these things about others, because we internalize them too and feel we can't reach our own language goals.

With your language skills, I'm sure you'd fit right in any business in Japan! The vocabulary you don't have, you'd pick up really fast, and you can always revert to English or Chinese if you need to say something you don't know how to say in Japanese! I don't think this is something that would really shut down doors on you! I am trying to learn both Mandarin and Japanese right now. I have a few basics in Japanese (can't hold a conversation) and I'm a total beginner with Mandarin... I wish I could a be third as fluent as you are! If I can become fluent and Mandarin and Japanese, I would speak 4 languages (French being my mother tongue). I would LOVE that!
