The meeting between Generals Ulysses S. Grant and Robert E. Lee in the McLean House on April 9, 1865 was only the beginning of the surrender proceedings at Appomattox Court House. Join park staff for a breakdown of the surrender meeting and discover some of the other events that transpired over the next several days as the soldiers of the Army of Northern Virginia surrendered their weapons, received their paroles, and began the journey home.

Should never have surrendered.....Lee regretted it saying "If i had forseen the use those people designed to make of their victory, there would have been no surrender...Had i seen these results if subjugation I would have preferrred to die at appomattox with my brave men. ----our road to empire began shortly after and we became just like the imperialist nation we fought against 100 years earlier....

No gov claiming to fight a war for "racial justice" would do to the plains indians what the Union did to the indians mere months after Lee's surrender.....The quest of empire was on and all the wars to "save democracy" began....

Lincoln, Grant, Sherman, Sheridan performed acts of terrorism on our own civilians and then used what they learned on the plains indians. All are terrorists and if the South won would have been tried for war crimes. But the victors are never tried..

"By the people and for the people" is true if you are talking about the SOUTH who VOTED in overwhelming numbers to leave....But like an abusive ex husband, who invades his former wife's home, burns it to the ground and drags her back by her hair the "Union" was saved....

How about instead of invading a sovereign nation without congressional approval, committing "total war' on the civilian population resulting in the deaths of over 700,000 people - 50,000 civilians, throwing political opponents in jail without trial and subverting the constitution.....Lincoln let them go in peace....after alll he did say secession is a "sacred right".....But I guess Lincoln had to DESTROY democracy to "save it".. ....Lincoln is the traitor because he used the fed army and force to end the VOLUNTARY union set by the founders to form a top-down federal gov that became "despotic at home" and "aggressive abroad" just as Lee predicted in letters to lord acton.

The Gen. Chamberlain's and Gen. Gordon's recognition and exchange of military honors was something that could have been scripted for a movie. Chamberlain ordered his men to render honors and Gordon bringing his horse to bow as he tips his sword to his boot toe at the same time to acknowledge the honor... I'm sure it was a very powerful moment to witness.
