Surrey Hills Green Lanes - 3. Wolvens Lane. Leith Hill.

You can't come out from London and NOT do Wolvens Lane? I give you my view of Wolvens Lane version 2.0, then we take a spin to the top of Leith Hill and back.
Part 4 will see us do Beggars Lane, Sheepwalk Lane and then back to the A3 via the picturesquely named Honeysuckle Bottom.
While you are in Shere you could also think about doing London Lane. As Run DMC would say, 'It's Tricky'....

Hey Gavin. I would just like to say how amazing these walkthroughs are. I’m a complete beginner to green lanes and appreciate everything involved in these videos. You’ve given me the confidence to go and try some of the easier Surrey lanes when the weather is nicer. Also, your explanations of the OS maps and the relations to the green lanes are priceless. Dan, that is really kind of you to say that. These were all recorded last year, and even since then some of them have changed. A number have been resurfaced or regraded, and just lately I've heard that trees are making some difficult. Check out my pal Pezza's channel..he has some good vids too kzbin.info

@@GavCritchley I have done some of the Pilgrims way in Kent and a rather large tree was completely blocking 2 separate lanes. It was quite the surprise to find. I’ve recently joined the TRF, and getting used to their green road map, it’s bloomin amazing! Thanks for the other channel too, will have a look now

@@advdan That happened to me down in Sussex. Took me an hour to turn the bike around, and another to coach it back up a greasy chalk hill. Never again.

I've been riding and driving this lane since 87 . There was a proper argument with the ramblers association, they decided they wanted the lane and were utter gits with it ! I and three other landy driver caught two blokes putting planks of 2x4 in the bottom of the really muddy puddles , they were both ramblers I had seen them before . I had two windscreens smashed by walkers on that lane ,no reason for it,I was punched by one old feller as he said I wasn't aloud there ! I returned the favour.its now a footpath basically, I rode it last weekend alone ,still got verbally abused by mountain bikers this time ! Who now think it's a road for them . Oh a quick heads up take a spre set of keys as those mountain bikers like to nick keys and sod off with them ! I ride like you slow and steady ,trying yo keep the lanes open for all .thanks for the video great content.

Kind of you to comment. Yes there are all sorts of thoughts and views about Wolvens. For some they have made it a great safe and easy lane, for others, its been ruined forever!

That's really kind of you to say! I'm loathe to say 'like and subscribe' in any of them, but I'm just back from Salisbury Plain on my CRF...very doable on an Africa Twin. Will edit the video and load it up tonight. The trails around here are lovely when it's dry. Question for you...Africa Twin or a Tenere?

@@GavCritchley I had a Klr650 and wanted to test ride the Tenere but it just wasn’t in any of the dealers at the time. I haven’t ridden the Tenere so it would be a little unfair of me to comment. In the end went for an ATAS and I really like it especially once I have put a set of Rally STRs on it. The only other bike I considered was the KTM 1090r. Look forward to the Salisbury Plain vid.

Hasn't it just? I remember it being like a muddy bob-sleigh run. Its definitely more accessible for more people now. I really hope that SCC doesn't close it to motorbikes.

Was that an electric bike used or was the engine sound taken out, cannot agree with your sanitized view of it now and you sound like you prefer easy 4x4 drive's ! I'm 86 and think they've destroyed the natural countryside , going by this they'd tarmac all roads if the funds were available ! Heartbreaking !

Its a Honda CRF250 Rally, but I drop the sound out. As soon as electric bikes drop to the price of gasoline bikes, I'll buy one though. Well done on getting to 86 Ron!

@@GavCritchley speaking of eletric bike, the zero dsrbf has only 88 milies of range if you do it at an average speed of 55mph, that means if you live in isle of dog and you want to ride it to newland's corner, you might not be able to get back in one charge.

@@norm701 Electric bike range will only increase (just like electric cars), and there will be more chargers available. If you lived in the Isle of Dogs and came to the Surrey Hills, you'd need to top your tank up on the way back. Electric is the future. I love IC engines, but they're not good for the planet and we need to move on. The stone age didn't end because we ran out of stones.

@@GavCritchley Okay my friend, just to point out. Back and forth from isle of dog to newland's corner is totally 80 miles, CRF250 rally's fuel consumption is 33.3km/litre, that means with 10L fuel tank, you get roughly 200 miles per tank that's more than 2x round trip from isle of dog to newland's corner. Also there might be more charging stations in the future, but we can easily fill up a gas tank in 2 minutes, can you do it with a electric bike? Imagine what happens if everyone in the future's "charging station" averagely stay 1 more extra hour? It's not that we have a religion in IC and worship it, in fact I had 2 electric scooters (real scooter size scooter) when I was in China. if in the future the electric can perform as good as fuel in terms of the range and top up speed, i don't think most will say no. btw the videos are great, thanks for the effort.

@@JDMCUSTOMS365 Wow! Good for you! Check out the beggars lane video. That has been all resurfaced now and is pretty doable on a big bike. Just watch out for any patches of wet chalk. I’ll check out Wolvens tomorrow.
