Le Conte is a relatively easy glacier to access being less than 20nm from Petersburg and Wrangell but most people do day trips due to the lack of anchorages inside the inlet. The kayakers were off the other boat, we invited them to come anchor with us when we spoke to them floating in the ice pack.

It's been in the single digits overnight here in Topeka, KS. with 16 inches of snow on the ground, the most since 1880 and I have been anticipating this drop all week! That change in the bay, from nearly empty of ice to packed with ice of all sizes and the animal life was spectacular. I loved the baby seal peeking around a chunk of ice, that made me smile. Can't wait till next week to see what more of the ice flows, the tide and so much more have to offer.

I was fortunate to see the Portage glacier up fairly close and personal from the deck of the ferry they keep there for that purpose. It was an awesome sight and in retrospect I'd have to count it as a bucket list item. Unfortunately I didn't get to touching distance like you guys, but I did secure a chunk of ice from off the shore to imbibe in 10,000 year old cocktails. I found the ice a bit gritty.

You're braver sailors than I am. The way all that ice can suddenly sneak up on you is why I'm only considering steel hull boats.
@AllisonandJamesSailing15 күн бұрын
Awe, thank you. Its all just calculated risk. A steel boat is a great option, but certainly not necessary!
@clivestainlesssteelwomble766515 күн бұрын
A lots got to do with the hull shape... Ideally you don't want it to be get a grip on the sides ..rather better to pop the boat up and out as against the squeeze... One of the first vessels to pass the NW passage did it that way locked overwintering in the ice current. It was immensely strong, insulated and essentially barrel shaped ... but was terrible to actually sail. If I remember it was a Norwegen or Danish expedition. Steel, Aluminium or Conceivably Basalt might do it. There was an experimental racer built for a double high latitudes OCR event look for the name Magma and Basalt fiber sailing Racer.

Vunderbar!! So enjoyed your videos. Watched them again and again. James is definitely an engineer. How do I know? Just ask him why burgies are blue! There are a lot of things he doesn't know, but nothing he can't explain. And Allison, those meals you cook! If I were a member of the crew, I'd look at the stove and ask, "What's everyone else eating?" I think Seward bought Alaska from the Ruskies during the Lincoln administration. Now look at it! 'Merica, f**k yeah!! Please be careful around those burgies. The seals are giving you the WTF look, every one. I would like to see a burgie bit invert though, so I'll keep watching carefully. God must have had a master plan when He brought you two together. -Curt❤❤

Another wonderful video guys. Incredible cinematography and weather it seems. Although the fishing not so bueno 😅 Thanks for bringing us along on your journey. Curious if you have interior condensation issues in that climate and if so how you deal with them?
@AllisonandJamesSailing14 күн бұрын
Thank You! Glad you enjoyed it. We timed it well with the weather! Still not so great on the fishing haha We did have interior condensation issues. You may have seen a few episodes back.. our v-berth was dripping wet resulting in a very soggy sleeping situation. We addressed it with insulative foam and an airgap. We'll be doing a review on the Froli system in an upcoming episode. We kept the rest of the interior dry by keeping the diesel stove running pretty well all Summer.
@stevewoodyear-smith817314 күн бұрын
Yes that makes sense under the mattress and I use same system which works well. The diesel heater takes care of the rest that’s great. You guys searching for your next destination adventure?

Of course! We’ve been following them for a long time. Really enjoying their NWP adventure! Hi Allison and James..thanks for another awesome video! Great job! A few questions...where are you now, are you still sailing down south somewhere? Do you have any plans on sailing around Newfoundland ,in the near future? Maybe you are working now to pay for your next adventure? Stay safe from the east coast of Canada 🇨🇦.

Thank you for tuning in, we’re glad you enjoyed it! We’re currently overwintering in the Broughtons in the north end of Vancouver island. Got lots to bring you in the meantime, cheers from the west coast!

You may have answered this previously, however I can’t see any comments regarding… Do you have issues with condensation? It seems desirable to have insulation installed. This appears to be a feature on “expedition“ boats. I’m new to sailing, coming from an Overlanding lifestyle. During freezing weather, I’ve had water and ice buildup inside the tent.
@AllisonandJamesSailing5 күн бұрын
Good question! Yes, we’ve had issues with condensation throughout this trip.. most significantly in the vberth where we sleep which, we did mention in previous episodes on route to Alaska, but it might be worth discussing solutions in more detail in a further episode! In short, before crossing the border we increased the insulation in the vberth which helped significantly. We also had the diesel stove running most of the summer which helped keep the condensation elsewhere mostly under control

Add a little kicked- back sophistication on your way by dropping a few terms , then checkout how lighter and grounded you feel- 1.oh my god 2. Holy crap 3 .really 4. Actually Its hard not imitating Hollywood, yet once you begin, you'll find yourself electing words and terms less numb..more about your own straight forward vocabulary. Wildlife deserves much more respect, in respect to people proximity. Think how you'd feel, sleeping with your babies,😮 and suddenly a thing of plastic with 'oh my gods aboard pointing cams looking like guns ! 60 ft is what is urged by experts.😮 Any time you sense wildlife is surprised, you have violated their comfort zone..by the way..the huge amounts of ice breaks is entirely the result of global warming..resulting from careless humans. Sound logical?
@AllisonandJamesSailing12 күн бұрын
Hmm doesn’t sound all that sophisticated… Perhaps you’re unfamiliar with the range of an ultra zoom lens? We make it a priority to respect wildlife in all of our interactions - we’re well aware of the voluntary limits advocated by NOAA and we’ve observed them. By the way, the ice is melting here in June because it’s Summer… Climate change is certainly real but LeConte glacier has been extensively studied and has determined to be neither receding or advancing. Fun facts, cheers!
