I've always been a fan of the buttpack on a pistol belt with a harness for carrying the basics. For me, I feel I can travel longer and be less fatigued. Partnered with a small backpack like you have here, it's an unbeatable combination. I like the way you set yours up, as you have plenty of space left to use for your specific travel plans. The center of the body is the crotch, the largest heaviest bone is the hip bone, the largest joint in the body is the greater trochanter on the hip bone. Nature favored center weightedness in its design of the human anatomy, and that all anatomy is designed by one force: gravity. A diver in the water weights himself at center. The waist strap on a pack is designed to bring weight back from shoulders to center. This alice system keeps it center.

Excellent bio-mechanical solution separating out gear in your backpack and placing a portion of it on your belt/hips. Why, your spine is the center of your torso rotation and prime torso structure. Your hips and torso rotate during walking/running - your primary function for efficient motion. For this to work effectively, you need a backpack that needs to be above ones hips. In my opinion, the Survival Belt Rig shown only suffers using shoulder straps. The straps possibly limit freedom of torso rotation. If the backpack holds about 20 pounds of gear and the belt rig supports the balance of gear without the shoulder straps for the belt rig, that would be best in my opinion.

Interesting. I see one thing few do. Your plash palaka. Several companies make a really light pouch to slip to the top of a harness for a poncho or tarp. Leaves room for a light fleece in your butt pack. Tbh it's a pretty basic thing. If you made it with a few buckles to close it you could sew one by hand out of some old trousers easily too or on a sewing machine out of old clothing recycle a zippper. If you made one you can put a small external pouch on for tent pegs and lines too

Just a point on why the military has three lines of gear; it's not so much to prevent having all your eggs in one basket, it's to allow you to do your job effectively. Your fighting order is for just that; fighting, so it needs to be kept to the essentials - ammo, water, comms, med kit and survival gear. Your rucksack could weigh up to a hundred pounds, no one is going to be able to move at speed carrying that.

Seeing the y rig brings back memories of the 80's era Army. Your rig was/looks better than ours though
@garenkarapetian7097 ай бұрын
My level-2 rig is very similar to yours, with some minor differences cause it's more of 24-48h kit. I too prefer butt-packs as one can fit all sorts of useful gear while remaining without Level3 bergen, and remain lightweight and ergonomic. Butt-pack will typically contain a poncho (which is also the shelter is my sleep system), a compressed woobie (Snugpack jungle blanket), contractor bag, mylar, Kochanski scarf, socks, cordage, bungee, Laplander saw, 50g baby-powder, wet-towels. My DIY ultra-light ultra-warm sleep-pad rests on top of the butt-pack, which also flips down and doubles as a sit-pad. Similar to your rig, I have only 1 pouch dedicated to water, but I carry a 2L canteen (+ filtering & purification). Then there's the pouch with crusader cup, brew kit, 24-48h rations and fire kit. Knife and Admin pouch on the right. On the left: Extra storage pouch like yours, with a Dump pouch unfolding underneath, Med kit. Radio and navigation on the yoke. Overall, I find that with such light setup I'm able to cover a lot more ground in 48h-72h, be more active and less tired, without much noticeable constraint to well-being. A small piece of advice for your setup: you might want to invest in hip padding to prevent shaffing during long marches. That's the first upgrade that most British soldiers do to the issued kit.
@EnduranceRoom7 ай бұрын
Thanks for this. I appreciate the details and tip. Your setup sounds very well thought out and capable. If I might ask, how do you implement the survival scarf, as a bivvy? I have been thinking about making one.

Hey Jess, very nice setup! Next time you are perusing the infernal-net, look up a South African SADF Pattern '83 Battle Jacket. The interesting thing to me is it was designed by sports and outdoor companies, and I think it certainly shows. It may have some appeal to you, particularly the way it distributes the load so well. It also doesn't look overly tacti-cool which has some advantages and appeal to me. Kommando Store has originals, plus a very comprehensive write-up on the history and features. There are plenty of reproductions to be found, but I lucked out and got an original, and find the build to be much better than the copies, which are still decent in their own right. It's the middle piece of kit between the chest rig, and "Grootsack" or Greatsack which is in it's own right an impressive frame pack. So as you mentioned in the video, part of a modular, overall system.

Couple movements with them like swings, presses and squats, and you have a full body strength and conditioning tool. I made a bunch of fitness videos under a playlist on my channel showing some of the tools I use and different lifts with them.

It works well. I have a Jääkäri L review video showing just that, running the pack with a belt rig underneath it and go through the belt rig. To be honest, I ran it for awhile and then went back to running the jääkäri with the waist belt. The carrying system on the L is excellent as is, plus there is enough room in the pack to stash belt rig or smaller bag with essentials. It’s worth testing out and seeing what works for you though.
