Its amazing (given that the the show was abruptly canceled) how Survival ended up being a decent finale for the program, complete with ironic title, and a homecoming which brought the companion's character development full circle. The battle with the Master bookends the Doctor's own changes, going from a man willing to murder a caveman to save himself in the first story to refusing to kill his nemesis in his last. Even that 30 second narration by Sylvester McCoy hastily written when word of the show's cancellation ended up feeling profoundly poetic, bittersweet, and fitting for the end of the show:

It's not the hunting that causes the planet to disintegrate. It's the infighting and disharmony between its inhabitants. That and the implication this is a very ancient world that is close to its natural end anyway. We're left with only guesses as to why the now long gone creators of this world made it the way they did. They were a very powerful civilisation who seemed to base their whole culture around the ritual of the hunt, and as an extension of that, a harmony with their environment. Anyone coming to the world adopts the role of prey or predator - becoming part of the cycle. I always imagine the original inhabitants being something like a feline version of Predator (except without the cloaking device and infra-red vision!) seeking out their prey on thousands of worlds. Clearly at some point the Master decides to investigate the rumours of its existence and ends up stuck there whilst the world is spiralling into terminal decline. I can't remember if I knew when Survival was being aired that it was going to be the last episode of Doctor Who. I don't think I did. Even when the news that it was all over did get around I think many held out hope that the show would return after a couple of years. I remember that fans organised a day of action where they attempted to jam the Beeb's switchboard with demands for the series' return but it was evidently to no avail. Of course that's not _quite_ the end for the 7th Doctor and Ace on screen... if you would dare to endure Search Out Science and DiT (Argh!!!). I look forward to Blake's 7 reactions though, now there's a show that doesn't get anywhere near enough love these days! Oh, and Happy Birthday Jamie!

In survival the Master is on this occasion, utilised better than in Time Flight, Mark of the Rani and the ultimate whereas in those three stories, he served no useful purpose at all and also he was not intended to be in time flight from the beginning and also he really in Survival does do well.
