I have carried a small AA flashlight in my pocket, with a pocket knife, since 9/11. I saw a story of a guy who made it out of 1 of the towers, only because he had a pocket flashlight to light his way down the dark, smokey stairwells. It hasn't saved my life, yet, but has come in handy many times over the years. I upgrade it every couple years.

I too in the past always took the absolute minimalist approach to survival gear that I could stuff in my wrangler jeans and shirt. However the problem with that, living in the Pacific Northwest, Montana and Wyoming you will find that it can snow all 12 months of the year above 6,000 ft. More than once I have awakened 6 + inches of snow even in a drought year like around July 4th 1977.

Very good video. People tend to either get carried away with 'fancy survival kit' or they take 'nothing at all' when a few useful things make all the difference. I pretty much carried Dans' kit every day for 10 years working alone in the countryside 40 years ago. My kit was a metal cup, a box of safety matches, a large tough polythene bag to sit on or make a cover/shelter or carry things in, a folding pocket knife and a couple of yards of baler twine wrapped tightly round the bag to make a small bundle with the matches inside to keep them dry and stuffed into the cup. Baler twine by the way is super strong and has a thousand uses from a spare boot lace, a belt, ties sticks together for a shelter tripod, or shredded to start a fire off. Just these few basic things, shoved in the pocket of a sensible coat in case it rains, a decent packed lunch and a few snacks is all it needs to survive quite well for 24 hours especially when you are alone a few miles from home in a wild place and you have an accident or stuck in bad weather. Don't forget to tell somebody where you are going and when you will be back so they know when and where to come and find you.

Something I carry with me is a "morale box". It's a little tin (like a Altoids sized one or similar) that I use to carry around a few pieces of hard candy. I like butterscotch, lemon, ginger and/or root beer for that. Speaking of the T6Zero, I carry one around in my everyday pack with a couple of ultralight tent stakes. Not as an emergency shelter, per se, but as easily portable shade for when I need it, like if I'm at a local park fishing in a pond and want to set up a spot to sit down/lounge while I fish. Also, I never, ever, ever go out into the woods (even at a state park) or travel without a compass.

The mountain ebike upgrades accessibility to the trails for us seniors. (I'm closing in 70) I used to crank a traditional mtn bike up our Colorado trails and now really appreciate the 749watt assist. I have a Mountain Smith Tour lumbar pack that I have geared specifically for biking. Besides survival and navigating basics I carry repair stuff and have room for a layer or two if needed. With the addition of Strapettes (a Mountain Smith accessory) I can keep the weight lower but still shoulder some of it. For me this is ideal for a day in the mountains, and if needed, an emergency night. I also carry an In-reach GPS because I'm so frequently out of cell service. Age is just a number!

If you are only taking along a Bic lighter, wrap a bread tie, rubber band, or one of those ties that comes with any usb cable around it under the red paddle. This prevents the paddle from being depressed and all the fuel gets released. Personally I have a Bic, some UCO storm matches and a 1/4 dia. fire steel all in a small plastic container with some cut up wooden coffee stirs and quick fire tabs.

Requiring a fire in order to get potable water is iffy. Fire in really wet conditions is challenging even with a lighter. A Sawyer mini or other small filter is a better option for people who do not practice fire craft. Water treatment tablets are light, shelf stable, simple, and a great second water treatment method. A whistle is another EDC item that everyone going out in the world should have. Get a flat whistle, wear it around your neck.

Yes a survival kit in a metal cup, they should all be in a metal container which can be used to boil water. I always get vexxed when I see a survival kit in a big plastic container, with no container in it except for a collapsible water bag or maybe some tin foil. Or if it's in a pouch, always put a cup or pot in too! A smaller version of yours fits in the aluminium Swiss M1984 canteen cup. If I'm going into the outdoors I take a stainless steel canteen cup but for the emergency kit the aluminium canteen is fine.
@simonh6371

P.S. and if your survival kit is in a water bottle there's even less of an excuse for not sliding it inside a metal cup if the sizes are compatible! Then it takes up no room!

I always thought a cheap emergency rain poncho was a great idea-because the difference between mostly dry and completely soaked is pretty big when you’re stuck outside away from home. And those reflective emergency blankets are similarly cheap and portable. In the same way you talk about the everyday Joe and the lighter-no special skill needs added to get a flame (although not everyone can accomplish an actual useful fire with a bic, but I digress)-no special skill or knowledge is needed to don a poncho or reflective heat blanket, either. Every day we all put on a shirt, and use a blanket. Everyone knows how.

A lighter is a no- brainer. I prefer a Clipper to a Bic because they’re refillable and the striker is removable for easier use as a sparker if it goes empty. A liquid fuel model with 0-rings is great as well. Fueled one three years ago and it hasn’t dried out yet.

Good advice! I might have a tendency to over gear a bit, but better to have and not need than need and not have. One basic that is in each of three choices of "go bag" is a good quality - over a backpack size - poncho. In the zipper case for the poncho I include some line and half a dozen reinforced aluminum stakes. My lighter is in a separate ziplock, but could easily be tucked in with the poncho. While on the pricey side my titanium Grayl is the other must have. Plus I always have knife and compass. These few things and a tire patch kit & pump if on the e-bike and good to go.

Absolutely spot on. People don't realise how a simple walk in a wild place can go bad. I know someone who died going for a three hour walk on a sunny day in a hilly area. Sudden cold, a mist, got lost, died of exposure overnight literally a few yards from a well used track. Didnt even have a coat. His friends turned back and he carried on with absolutely nothing in the way of equipment or food.

Yes that's how it happens. One minute you are fine literally a minute later you are struggling. I remember a very hot day working on my fathers farm about a mile from home with T shirt and jeans on. Sudden extreme thunderstorm. Ice cold rain almost hail stones and I got caught without shelter. I went from pouring sweat in the heat to shivering and soaked through in a minute. I had foolishly decided to walk home rather than take shelter and I was in quite a bad way by the time I got there. Even having a big plastic bag to sit on and put over myself would have kept me dry and made all the difference.

I like a fanny-pack ---- with an SOL breathable bivy, a (Hard Cover)titanium cup and canteen, a BIC lighter, maybe a wetfire or 2, a spaceblanket, a Spyderco Paramilitary 2 pocket knife, a Fenix LED light, all of this is less than 3 pounds --- basically nothing unless you carry your Sig P365 or Glock 43 then MAYBE a bit over 5 pounds ---- but still no excuse not to put it on each time. If you wanna go the extra mile add 25 feet of paracord, a compass, a Sawyer mini, a whistle, and couple foil pouches of Spam, Tuna, a protein bar.

Dan, what do you think about a minimalist shelter consisting of a cheap pocket (or purse) poncho and a 30 or 40 gallon trash bag? I've seen it suggested that you can stay perfectly dry by putting on the poncho and then standing inside the trash bag as you lean against a tree or sit and lean back against its trunk. I can see that it would be very packable to the point of being pocketable, but would it work? I ask because in the scenario you laid out, that being surviving for a few days when you know that help is on the way or knowing that you can reach help within a few days, you could leave out the water purity gear because it wouldn't be a real concern. Even if you drink skanky water while you were "surviving" for as much as a week, you could get the necessary medical treatment, after you were "rescued" or managed to walk your way out of the predicament, to keep from getting sick from the bad water and that would negate the need to boil the water. In our area late spring, summer and early fall are warm enough that if you stay dry you can stay warm enough without a fire. If you only take the gear that you suggested, wouldn't you be about as well off with just a poncho and trash bag, most of the year, in the Eastern woodlands? If you're savin' space to that extent, ya might as well save all ya can, I say.

Brilliant. I am highly effective at starting fires with a variety of tools, including ferro rods and old school flint and steel. I am also a huge fan of zippo lighters because they are a tool that can keep you in flame as long as you have spare flints and you periodically come across paraffin or naphtha. At a push I can make fire with a bow. This is precisely why I pack BIC gas lighters in my survival kit. They are incredibly reliable, and they dont leak gas over time. I went through an old bag recently that was ten years old and the damn gas lighter in the pack still worked after a decade. All the fancy skills are great....but just throw a gas lighter in there for good measure because it only weighs a few grammes.

Well shit ....GOOD FOR YOU .....every single survival hipster out there on reddit and all the forums yips on about how they went out in the bush to SURVIVE for a 3 to 10 days and they're all proud of themselves because mommy said so. This is the best video on survival and the way it probably will happen ...... I've tried to tell these kids that if you're going out to PLAY SURVIVAL you can't. Granted you can go out and practice "stuff in the woods" but there is no way in hell you can ever truly simulate an emergency outdoor wilderness survival situation. Besides that, all these kids going out with their pack of survival gear don't get it !!! If you have all you're gear you're basically camping, albeit longer than you intended. You don't create a real survival scenario - you can't, it's not something you turn on and off like a light bulb to fake it. It usually happens like you said ,,,,,, you're out doing XYZ thing in the woods, then poof something goes sideways - now you have a problem, you get injured, lost, or something and even then that's not so bad. Stayut and you'll wind up camping a few extra days till the SAR team sent to get you shows up, usually about 72 hours on average because you TOLD someone your plans. The way things really get nasty and become survival is when you lose your sexy pack of stuff ..... It fell off a cliff, or down a mountain, you dumped on a canoe trip and the river got it, you ditched it getting away from a bear. NOW you're in a real emergency outdoor wilderness survival situation. A sudden unexpected event that changes the entire plan, lost or whatever , and with no gear and then the FEAR actually sets in. That's survival ...... Kids !!! All you got now is your brain and steady nerves and maybe of you're real smart and not a web based desk-jockey survivalist you have a pocket survival kit and you know that if you stop - S =Stop, T = Think, O = Observe, P = Plan you'll be fine. All you really need is your belt knife and a POCKET survival kit or in your case a cup, that's way more realistic than a pack full of camp gear. BTW if you can't filter water big whoop - in 3 days without water yer dead anyway so drink up kids, when they find you they can treat tummy bugs but they can't treat dead.

My take: if nothing else, bring shelter. Even a space blanket could be the one thing that saves you, and it fits in your jeans pocket. In terms of a slightly better option though, I’m still not sold on the fire. Fire is dangerous, you really need good skills to light one in a random situation, and it’s a lot of work to gather and process fuel. Most people who are already good at fire are probably geeky enough to have a bigger kit than this too. So we’re down to shelter and water. I would go with the Sawyer squeeze or similar, which packs pretty small, is light, and is both collection system and drinking vessel if necessary. I’d love one of these tiny tarps from CCB instead of the space blanket, and that would be my minimum day hike/biking kit. But me being me, I’d probably have a pocket knife too :) Also I bet I’m not the only backpack nerd who got a bit excited with this vid. Like if you are the same!
