I wear a 3 inch piece of fatwood on a paracord necklace. I've drilled a hole in it to thread the paracord through, and coated it with 2 coats of clear nail varnish. The necklace includes a small penknife, ferro rod, and a glow stick. I like making mini kit tins, a mini stove tins. I also have a keyring with 4 mini pill canisters attached for dryer lint, charcloth, fatwood, magnesium, and cottonwood balls in vaseline. Keyring also has knife, torch, guitar picks, candles, matches, and a compass. I'm a girl prepper geek.

The priorities never change no matter how large or small your kit is. SHELTER (i.e.-cordage to construct shelter, fire starting), WATER (i.e.- water bag, purification tablets, aluminium foil to make a pot to boil in) FOOD (i.e.- snare wire, fishing gear), CUTTING ( i.e.- small multitool, razor blades, SIGNALLING (i.e.- mirror, whistle, flagging tape) BASIC FIRST AID (i.e.- bandages, antibiotic ointment, alcohol prep pads). Misc. items include button compass, sewing kit, duct tape, pencil, paper, flashlight. These are all items that can fit into an altoids tin. Combine that with a space blanket rubber banded to the tin and you have a decent compact survival kit.
@SebastianSynn18252 Жыл бұрын
In Walmart I've found silver mirror duct tape. I cover the inside of the lid with it and it makes a decent signaling mirror. Not as good as the real thing, but it definitely works well and gives you an extra tool without using up any space.

Good video. These kits are fun, however, unique to your individual plans and perceived needs. I just made a "Grandpa" kit. Anything to patch up and field service my grandchildren. Basically our thinking was along the same lines. I included a nice pair of tweezers [splinters & ticks], and baby Aspirin.

Really appreciate you sharing your kit. I got a lot of good ideas from it. There's minor room for improvement and not even much adding or subtracting from the kit. The important thing though is you made this for you so it would work for you. Great insights and good kit.
@Eidolon1andOnly3 жыл бұрын
To be frank, I mean this respectfully, but critically, the paper and pen are useless, you have no signaling devices like a whistle, maybe the tin can be used as a mirror, but a tiny piece of paper and a pen will never be useful in a survival situation. Never. Especially those small pieces of paper. If I'm going to leave a note/signal for rescuers, I'll take a charred stick and write with big letters on a rock to be noticed on a rock, or leave a rock/stick arrow showing which direction I went. If need be I would draw in the sand with a stick, but a detailed note on a tiny piece of paper will never get noticed or get easily blown away. That being said I think a small ink cartridge for a pen and a piece of paper might be good for personal notes/map making, just not for leaving a note behind and an ink cartridge takes up less space. I'd also recommend putting some kind of signaling mirror, even just a strip of mirror tape and a whistle on top of the kit. Signaling for rescue is the most important within the first 72 hours.
@sagesapience3 жыл бұрын
I think I mentioned that in the description about adding a mirror. Pen and paper are definitely valuable, but you're entitled to have your own opinion. :)
@Eidolon1andOnly3 жыл бұрын
@@sagesapience I did say pen and paper can be valuable, just not in the way you mentioned as for leaving a note, and I did mention using a small ink cartridge instead of a bulky pen. If I missed something in the description that's my bad. Like I said, your kit is a good one and I appreciate you sharing it. Lot of good ideas. Thank you.

If I may make another suggestion, replace the alcohol wipe with a betadine wipe. They're more effective with dermal disinfection, they're packaged the same way so it won't impact space usage, and they don't burn like hell on open wounds.

Alcohol wipes can double as a firestarter tho
@davidnagore7259 ай бұрын
@@jaqian True enough, but the kit already has fire starting capabilities beyond the alcohol pads, and in a kit this small redundancy is an unaffordable luxury.

Horses for courses, right? It all depends what kind of purpose one is building the kit for. If it’s “got lost in the woods” kind of scenario the torch light is more of a morale boost; what you really need is a Mylar blanket, a bin bag and a poncho, and those are not gonna fit into an Altoid tin. Altoid Tins are no more than a good thought experiment (how much and which kind of useful stuff I can fit in a least amount of space?), and based on that kind of thought experiment it’s a good idea to create an EDC pouch. Most of the functions of Altoid tins that I’ve seen are covered by just two objects in my pocket.

It was ok, Some things I wouldn't have used. The pen, the cordage in the pen, flashlight and sandpaper. I would've put in an emergency foil poncho or blanket for shelter. It would fit. For me, an Altoid kit should just be Fire (small bic and stuff to burn), Water (a bag and pills to sterilize it), and Shelter related.

That's a pretty cool pocket kit. My only suggestion would be to get or make a container around the size of the fatwood, then shave it down into ready-to-use pieces to go into said container. Kind of like how you want to pre-thread any needles....[[|:-)

I noticed how hard it Was to get the knife out . Tryed a few Times and ok. One night i wanted to do something and was not fully ther with my thoughts. I Pulled the knife out with my Hand on the scheath. The knife went back a littel bit and with the New scharp blade i gut the Thumb just under the nail . Was not sutch a bad cut but was Bleeding like hell . First i put my Thumb in my mouth . Them took my firstaid bag. Now get it open with one Hand and open a bandage. Not posible without getting blood every were . And all my stuff is neu . So i learned to have one big bandage ( a rap ) . I dont know the Englisch Word as near and easy to access as possible. When you got the Finger raped its easyer to Handel everything . So one closs or how they are called i got in a small bag or pocker on my beld at Front. Small and dos not disturb .

Never suture a wound in the field, especially with non-sterile items not specifically designed for the task and/or if you're in a situation where a good little pocket kit like this needs to be used. Ever. Control bleeding, clean it as well as you can, protect it with a dressing, and get your ass to civilization.
@gordontyree98583 жыл бұрын
Couldn’t agree more! NEVER suture in the field unless 1. You have the training, practice and experience AND Sterile suture and instruments to do the job!! A much better way to care for a laceration is...Direct pressure to control and stop bleeding, clean wound by irrigation, apply some antibiotic ointment and dress with sterile dressing, then secure with tape. For larger wounds, I carry 3M Steri-strips 1/4 in x 3 1/2 in packet. Same sequence as above. Clean your hands the best you can prior to application to prevent infection! Far superior to suturing and far less painful, plus no specialized training needed to apply. Great little kit! Love the Velcro idea! Thanks!

The obvious problem is one of limitations. When you try to stuff everything into a tin, you end up with something that does a little of everything and none of it well. This form factor lends itself to being a decent fire, medical, repair, navigation or water kit...but not all of these at the same time. You will discover the inadequacies of your kit when you attempt to use it. Unfortunately, for the medical portion of this kit that can and will lead to disastrous consequences.
