How to shoot an azimuth, adjust for the angle of declination, and how not to get lost in the wilderness while navigating with a map and compass. Lensatic compass navigation means you have to adjust for the angle of declination manually unlike with some of the base plate compasses that are available on the market. The problem with adding declination to your compass bearing in your example is that you have already offset your map for the declination. Therefore, any bearing that you take from the map once oriented & offset, will already be adjusted for declination.

They're not good at answering their phones but they are open during the day for people to drop in and buy maps. R25 each. Hi Stefan! Some people have an absolute knack for navigation and if your wife says you can do it by the sun then you're good! ;) I'm joking, but it's great to at least have the sun navigation down, that way you're able to orientate yourself quickly without too much fussing about a compass. C

A compass simply helps you maintain a determined direction of travel. With a good topo map, a navigator can use natural landmarks to determine the direction of travel without the use of a compass. There are also many methods to maintain direction of travel called 'dead reckoning'. Navigation by dead reckoning is commonly used by bush pilots in the Canadian arctic, where magnetic navigation is impossible and even GPS coverage can be spotty.
