Thanks Gerry, that was really interesting and well explained. Any tips for using fire for signalling in a survival situation? For example, how to create smoke?

Hi Rob, thanks for your support as ever! Apologies for my delayed reply...its been a hectic few days. Great question & its another massive benefit of being proficent in fire lighting skills. Ideally signal fires would be in a prominent position & easy to spot. They should be pre-prepared & ready to burn at a moments notice. To do this, a large kindling teepee should be placed over a shallow fire pit. A tinder bundle should be placed right in the middle. Once burning well, adding greenery will increase the smoke levels... so branches with lots of foliage would be best. Anything rubber based will produce black smoke which would potentially be more noticable. If enough resouces are available, it would be good to have 3 pre-prepared signal fires in a well spaced triangle...this should leave no doubt that someone is in trouble & needs help!

Thanks Peter, I appreciate you taking the time to comment. I've just subscribed on your channel too & am looking forward to viewing your content. Looks ike we have lots of similar interests! Yes thistle down is great, but as mentioned it does fizz out fast so needs to be part of a more substantial tinder nest. Should still be lots of it around atm. Wait for a sunny day when its nice & fluffed out & collect a few ziplock bags of it. It'll be a good source of campfire tinder for the months ahead 😊

@@gerrytheranger232 thanks buddy, I am heading out today to fill a tinder bag, as I went out 2 nights ago in the rain to challenge myself and everything was wet on the ground. managed to find birch tree and made a fire and a shelter to dry the logs over. was a good night :)
